Build a starship. Brew a potion. Explore a dungeon. Create a universe. Give your wizard a spaceship. Now in hardcover!

About this project

Rediscover the fun of pencil and paper, of building anything you can imagine, with rules that are clear but not so thin they'll blow away in a strong wind.

Two - now THREE! - wonderful open tabletop roleplaying games from two - now THREE! - very different genres which work independently, or can be integrated seamlessly together.

Two hardcover RPGs, and a bonus third as a PDF (with an option to upgrade it also to hardcover - see "add-ons", below).

Once this Kickstarter ends, you will not be able to pledge.  You will be able to find out more information about What's O.L.D. is N.E.W. at the official website, at EN World, or in the EN Publishing forum.  Also follow @Morrus on Twitter.

Elven musketeers line up in the rain to defend against an oncoming goblin horde. Weathered watchmen investigate a murder in a scummy tavern. Diabolists meddle with things that they shouldn't as they summon the most evil of beings from the depths of Hell. Pirates and swashbucklers battle for supremacy on the high seas. A heroic adventurer adds a moat to his ever-expanding castle.

Bounty hunters track down outlaws hiding in trader towns on worlds at the fringe of the galaxy. Starships explore unknown worlds, going where nobody has gone before. Great generational arks seek somewhere to call home. Detectives investigate a murder in a far-future solar system on a trail which will take them from Mars to Jupiter's moons. Agents infiltrate a criminal organization, going undercover to take down a galactic crime boss. A group of smugglers locate a new hyperdrive system to increase the speed of their freighter.

I have some rather wonderful news. Due to the fact that I'm ordering myself some additional copies of the books for various reasons (selling at conventions and the like), we've achieved the HARDCOVER GOAL! As it stands right now, everybody in the £40+ tiers (including early birds, not-so-early-birds, and F.U.L.L. packages) will be receiving HARDCOVERS BOOKS, not softcover. With 4 days to go, that was just under the wire, but I'm really pleased I'm able to announce this!

The complete haul - three RPGs, and a pile of supplements, plus two softwares! Various formats depending on your pledge(s) including hardcovers, softcovers, and PDFs. See the section on "add-ons" further down the page!

I've been writing these games for several months now; they're in playtesting (O.L.D. is in private playtesting while N.E.W. has been in semi-public playtesting since December 2013).  Actually, in reality, I've been writing them in my head for over 20 years. They're inspired by many games I played in the 1980s, bringing together all the things that excited me about those games while avoiding the things that I feel made those games not work as well as they could.  Influences like FASA's old Star Trek RPG and Traveller (both classic and more modern versions) go into N.E.W., while O.L.D. has hints of AD&D, MERP, WFRP and more. Added to that are the lessons, innovations, and examples of many modern games, some of whom have broken records right here on Kickstarter.

Below is a short video preview of the contents of O.L.D.  There's a longer version here, if you have a few minutes to spare. Please note that those are previews of the playtest document, not the final product!

Neither of these games have a default setting (although both will be supported with settings and adventures). They're roleplaying games which encourage you to create your own setting, whether that be a medieval fantasy or far-future sci-fi one. Both games have extensive tools to help you do exactly that, and also to help you tweak dials of low-high fantasy, hard-soft sci-fi, and so on.

RULES CRUNCHY! Yep, high-crunch can be unusual these days, I know, although the world's most popular RPG right now is most assuredly crunchy. These are crunchy games! You can spend hours tinkering with them, or just throw yourself straight in! Play itself is designed to be fast, but both games allow you to spend as long or little as you like on the "back end".  So if you enjoy optimizing characters, or building starships, or designing planets, spells, magic items, settings, races, and careers, you can - and it all funnels down into easy rules in-game.  Think of it like a sportscar - a car company spends years researching and designing and building a car, tweaking weight ratios and power outputs and streamlining the bodywork and fuel efficiency; but after all that, when they sit in the driver's seat, they just have to put their foot on the gas and turn the wheel!  OK, it's an RPG, so the "driving" experience is more tactical than that, but the principle is the same!

A mighty fire dragon!

The playtest documents have been downloaded by THOUSANDS of people.  You are welcome to download them yourself and take a look.

NOTE: Playtest document will be for Kickstarter backers only once the Kickstarter campaign ends; the above link will no longer be valid. While the campaign is running, they will be publicly available.

There is no NDA, no protection, or DRM, but please do not distribute these documents yourself outside your gaming group. You may, however, talk about them anywhere you wish, in detail if you want, and I heartily encourage you to create and post characters, strongholds, spaceships, monsters, spells, concoctions, races, species, careers, and more.

You'll also get access to the N.E.W. playtest adventure, A Visit to Keepsake.  Yup, a whole free adventure featuring bounty hunters on the trail of an intergalactic outlaw licensed from the SANTIAGO novels of Mike Resnick.

Every single backer, no matter the amount of their pledge, will also have access to all of the evolving playtest documents throughout 2014 starting right now.  That means from the moment you pledge, you have access to the latest ruleset, and will continue to have access to them. As the full games come to fruition, you'll have the latest rules immediately.  And, of course, the gorgeous final product at the end of it!

Elven musketeers
Elven musketeers

Both O.L.D. and N.E.W. use the same system.  Each book is different, however, containing different careers/traditions, equipment, races/species, monsters, and so on.  Additionally each has chapters useful to it - O.L.D. has a magic system, herbalism and alchemy, stronghold building rules, a chapter on warfare, wilderness travel; N.E.W. has comprehensive starship construction rules, space combat, cybernetics, and so on.

DESCRIPTOR. At the top of the character sheets you can see an area known as the "descriptor". The descriptor presents a number of fundamental things about your character in the form of a single summarizing sentence. It takes the following form:

The O.L.D. descriptor. The N.E.W. one is similar. But bluer.
The O.L.D. descriptor. The N.E.W. one is similar. But bluer.
The N.E.W. descriptor. See - bluer!
The N.E.W. descriptor. See - bluer!

CAREERS. O.L.D. and N.E.W. use a career-based system with attributes which grant d6-style dice pools.  You build a character by selecting sequential careers which combine to create your starting attributes. For example, you might start off as a bartender (developing some social skills) and then join the town guard (developing some investigative skills), then get promoted to Inquisitor (becoming even more proficient at investigation).  Or you might start off as a street kid, join a gang, go to prison, think hard about your life and go to college before joining the space fleet as an engineer.  Each choice shapes your character - your attributes, your skills, even your age!

TACTICAL COMBAT.  I really wanted a system that encouraged movement and positioning in combat. Especially when it came to ranged combat, which I've always felt gets a bit of a short shrift in many games.  So I've come up with a system which is easy to use, but encourages combatants to move about and try to gain advantageous positions while not leaving themselves vulnerable. Playtesters tell me I have succeeded at this, and that players and bad guys alike all jockey for position on the battlefield.

BUILDING. Chapters detail how to build strongholds (O.L.D.) and starships (N.E.W.). One important part of the system, for me, were these two construction systems. From the outset, I wanted to explore the idea of building a stronghold and improving it as the campaign progresses, with different features giving you tangible character benefits. I wanted to avoid micromanaging the daily finances of a stronghold (this isn't "Dungeons & Accountants", after all) but allow heroes to invest their well-plundered wealth into castles, islands, farms, towers, or volcano lairs which they care about because they've built them up over time much like their characters. The same goes for starships in N.E.W. - hunting down that new antimatter drive to increase the top speed of your military-spec freighter should feel like an achievement, and the players should be emotionally invested in their vessel.

Strongholds are limited only by your imagaination
Strongholds are limited only by your imagaination

HERBALISM & ALCHEMY. I always thought a ranger should be more supported when she gathers some herbs and mixes them together into a soup to help ward off the evil infection contracted by her wards when they were touched by the wraith's deathly grip. Or a potion which makes vicious animals ignore you, a poultice which heals a wound, even an oil which turns you invisible.  Love potions, poisons - bubble, bubble, toil, and trouble.  And so I've written a system of herbalism and alchemy which ranges from mixing a few herbs together into a healing brew to using ground unicorn horn, troll's blood and a fire opal to create a magical concoction. The actual ingredients matter, and the system is very flavorful.

COUNTDOWNS. One awesome mechanic used throughout both games, which folks have loved in the playtests, is the COUNTDOWN. A countdown takes place when there is an unknown time limit before something occurs. It is used in the following situations:

  • Death. An unconscious character uses the countdown mechanic as he slips towards death.

  • Illness. Disease and illness use the countdown mechanic as symptoms worsen.

  • Drowning & Suffocation. Characters who cannot breathe (underwater, in a vacuum, or some other reason) use the countdown mechanic to determine when they lose consciousness.

  • Unknown Explosions. Some bombs or explosives have an unknown countdown time. The countdown mechanic is used to determine when that happens.

  • Other Ticking Clocks. There are many other situations where a ticking clock is relevant. Occasions where you need a tense situation as a character tries to do something before something else happens are ideal for it. Can the character repair his transporter beacon before the soldier looks in the crate he's hiding in? Can that hacker get in and out of the government mainframe before someone notices? Can a climber scale a crumbling cliff before it collapses?

The countdown is started by forming a dice pool. Different situations will determine the size of that dice pool – a dying character uses one equal in size to his ENDURANCE attribute, for example, while cliffs or bombs will have their dice pool size set by the GM. The larger the dice pool, the longer you – probably! - have.

Each turn, the dice pool is rolled. Usually it's rolled by the player in question – she rolls her own death dice, or her own drowning dice, or for the bomb each time she makes an attribute check to disarm it.

Any dice which comes up with a six is removed from the dice pool, and play continues.

Eventually the last dice will be removed from the dice pool. It is then that the character dies, the bomb explodes, or the soldier looks in the crate.

A starship explodes as its countdown expires

AGE. Yup, I said age. The game is designed to last your character's entire lifetime if you want it to. Downtime allows you to gain careers between adventures and revisit the character later in life to see where they're at. Not all campaigns last a week - these can last decades, and that's rife with narrative potential! Remember how Star Trek: The Motion Picture revisited the Enterprise crew and they were all doing different things? Or, if you prefer they can just last a few hours. As I like to say, a character is for life, not just for Christmas.

In addition to buying many attribute, skill, and abilities, characters also advance through four "tiers".
In addition to buying many attribute, skill, and abilities, characters also advance through four "tiers".

OPEN. Both games will be "open". What this means is that fan and third-party publisher materials will not only be permitted, but encouraged and facilitated. Part of that includes the provision of user-content databases (there's an example of one here) to which new careers, traditions, species, races, monsters, starships, and so on can be added, browsed, and shared. The other part will be a generous, free license to publish and sell supporting materials, settings, adventures, and more.

Current content databases (more coming soon!):

MULTIMEDIA.  It's the 21st century and we have access to lots of creative technology to enhance an RPG. Linked narratives help set the flavor and atmosphere, covering a whole variety of themes and settings. These are linked from the PDF versions, and QR codes are provided in the print versions.  For example, here's a detective investigating a murder on Ceres in a scene called Cops & Robots (there's a bunch more here):

OTHER FEATURES.  There are so many things I'd love to boast about! If you take advantage of the offer to check out the playtest documents, you'll see them for yourself.  But here's a quick list:

  • Open ended skill system
  • Reputation, contacts, and rivals
  • Races and chases
  • Illnesses and disease
  • Space travel, space combat
  • Freeform spellpoint magic which anybody can use a little bit but trained magic-users will use so much better (O.L.D.) or a fatigue-based psionics system (N.E.W.)
  • Tons of monsters and aliens, equipment, magic items, gadgets.
  • N.E.W. has loads of scientific information - a whole chapter deals with stellar classifications and rogue planets and planetary systems, as well as high/low/zero gravity, radiation, thick/thin atmospheres and more.  There's even a scientific advisor checking it over!
  • Both games have extensive rules and advice on building your own world or setting, along with tools and tables to help you do that.
  • Mounted combat in a way that'll actually get used!
  • Elven musketeers.
  • An entire chapter in O.L.D. on running large-scale warfare.
  • Wilderness travel rules.
  • Firearms.  Yep, O.L.D. has muskets, pistols, and the like.  Of course, your setting is your setting, and it's up to you whether you have a high magic/low magic stone age/renaissance setting, but O.L.D. is very much designed to allow for all of those things.
  • Adventure paths and settings.  You may well be familiar with War of the Burning Sky, ZEITGEIST: The Gears of Revolution, and SANTIAGO: A Myth of the Far Future.  We will use all three of those to provide pre-published settings and adventures.
  • Scary undead and demons/devils.  This might sound silly, but I really want the undead to be creepy as hell, and demons/devils to be pure evil in a "I don't want to turn the lights off tonight" kind of way.  Not just powerful monsters with supernatural abilities.

Every Kickstarter needs great stretch goals, and if this one is lucky enough to get funding, I have several in mind including upgrades to hardcover and  - eventually - color for the hardcopy versions of both, and more.  Below you'll see the super-duper STRETCHOMETER 2000  so that you can keep track of the extra stuff you're getting without any extra action on your part.  Yup, that means that the more people who pledge, the better the stuff you get becomes!

What happens if tons of color art is commissioned but the color format goals are not met? All that art still gets commissioned and appears in the PDF versions of the book (and in b/w in the print version). Plus a special edition print-on-demand version of the book becomes available separately which features all the color art.

This stretch goal is ACHIEVED! Every backer gets this adventure, with no other action required on their part.

£39,000 - [ACHIEVED - £1K EARLY!] N.O.W. Mike Myler will be writing N.O.W. if we hit this stretch goal. Play as the action heroes of the 80s, own the high-tech supervehicles of superspies and vigilantes, conduct espionage, or go to war. Secret agents, lone crusaders, and soldiers of fortune will all usher out the vestiges of the O.L.D. and pave the way for the N.E.W.!

N.O.W. - the final stretch goal!

N.O.W. is a bonus PDF with an option to upgrade to hardcover as an add-on (see below)
N.O.W. is a bonus PDF with an option to upgrade to hardcover as an add-on (see below)

What is N.O.W.N.O.W. is the third book in the trilogy started with O.L.D. and N.E.W.  It's a game set in the present day, and I want to give it to you for free as a 300-page full-colour PDF.  To do that, we need to hit the final stretch goal of £40,000.

N.O.W. features:

  • 80s super vehicles - talking cars, supersonic helicopters, motorbikes with machine guns, Aston Martins with ejector seats and oil slicks, cards which turn into submarines, boats, and planes of dark vigilantes and billionaires. Build your own vehicle, give it weapons, armour, high-tech stuff, a turbo-boost, stealth mode, and use it in the awesome vehicle combat system.
  • Secret Agents and gadgets. Superspies with laser watches and jet packs.
  • Muscular action heroes and deadly martial artists.

And just imagine the possibilities when you combine N.O.W. with O.L.D. or N.E.W.  Magic in the modern day?  Aliens stalking commando units in the rainforest?

Like every good Kickstarter, it's time to announce the add-ons. Add-ons are awesome additional stuff you can get by increasing your pledge. In this case, you will be able to upgrade any of the bonus PDF products to a gorgeous softcover print product - in full colour (definitely full colour!) These will be produced via print-on-demand separate to the main print run of the core rulebooks.

  • Spires in the Sky by Kevin Kulp (£10)
  • Waking Nightmares by Ryan Nock (£10)
  • O.L.D. Bestiary (£15)
  • N.E.W. Bestiary (£15)
  • Starship Recognition Manual (£15)
  • N.O.W. The Roleplaying Game Hardcover (£50)

Now, if you're pledged £15 or more, you're already getting those in PDF format automatically. If that's all you want, you can happily leave it at that and you'll get 'em. If, however, you'd rather have the adventures in print, here's what you do:

Simply go to your pledge and increase it by the required amount for each add-on. You don't need to tell me yet which books you want - just make sure your pledge amount is correct.  That information will be gathered via Kickstarter's survey system after the Kickstarter campaign ends.

IMPORTANT NOTE: These add-ons (and only the add-ons, not the main rewards) are produced via Print-on-Demand. To make life easier for you and for me, I'm handling this slightly differently.  Rather than charge you shipping and send you the book(s), I'll be giving you a coupon for the value of the books you order.  You will then be able to use that coupon to claim the books from DTRPG when the time comes, but you will be responsible for your own shipping costs.  So to clarify: you'll get a coupon for your order which you'll use to claim your reward.

Risks and challenges

The Kickstarter is all about timing. I've learned so much from my previous successful Kickstarters, and planned things accordingly to make this one the smoothest one yet! There are a number of tasks - playtesting, art, layout, etc. which will each individually take months. The art, especially, is going to be a long, long process (assuming funds are raised to cover it!), as is work on the manuscripts, playtesting, and so on.

Doing those things sequentially, rather than at the same time, doesn't make a lot of sense in this particular instance - months of playtesting followed by months of art is a very inefficient way of doing it, when the art - and some other things - could start right now. Especially with some of the planned stretch goals which I'd want ready on launch, not months afterwards. For example, I would love to have Hero Lab support for character and ship generation right from the get-go, but that's a task that needs to start very early because it's not easy, and requires me to contract a solid, reliable freelancer to do it.

Even with all that, it's still going to take a year. Doing them sequentially, it would take much longer.

So I want the art to commence right now, while playtesting and development is going on, so that it's ready when the manuscript is ready. Additionally I want that playtest process to be very inclusive and community-driven, and part of the plan is that there will- additionally - be large community driven databases of fan material on launch plus possible some third-party support and publications, all of which needs to start long, long before the final manuscripts go to layout.

It's like baking a cake. No, more like making a meal with a bunch of elements, and wanting them all to finish cooking at exactly the same time!

That's something I learned from TSAD, my previous Kickstarter. There were delays with that, and various problems, for sure, and I know how to avoid every one of those issues this time. Plan development, art, etc. all simultaneously; use an actual fulfillment company to ensure everyone gets their products on time rather than relying on volunteers; and so on. With that one I did everything sequentially and consequently it took ages - and some parts are still coming. All of that could have been done at the same time with better planning. I'll have some good news to share on that front very soon, incidentally - and the sequel, To Stake A Vampire, is currently being polished by by Mike Myler and is going to be awesome. I can't wait!

THE. F.U.L.L. PACKAGE! Both O.L.D. and N.E.W. in softcover format. You will also get the PDFs mentioned above (that's PDFs of BOTH books) and continuing access to both the O.L.D. and N.E.W. playtest documents throughout 2014. If any stretch goals include PDFs, you'll automatically get those, too, with no other action needed on your part.

Any upgrades to the rulebook (to color, to hardback) enabled by stretch goals will be yours automatically with no other action needed on your part.

Backers outside the US will need to add £40 to your pledge for shipping. Sorry! See the "Shipping" section for more information

S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Money to burn? You will get exclusive Kickstarter only (these will NOT be sold elsewhere afterwards) copies of the limited edition run (both games). These will have a different cover to the regular ones. To repeat: there is no way these limited editions will ever be sold after the Kickstarter ends. The covers will be full-colour covers; the artwork will be chosen by backers of this tier (collectively, not each!). Plus the PDFs from the previous packages. Backers outside the US, see the "Shipping" section for shipping costs.
