Enunciation is a 2016 Burning Man Honorarium project. The sculpture is a stainless steel cocoon of playable light, emerging from the dusty playa. We are seeking your help in completing our project for the playa and beyond.
Triangular facets make up the outer surface, mirroring the surrounding landscape in the metal. During the day, Enunciation offers respite from the heat -- a quiet reflective space amidst the desert expanse.
At night, the entire interior of the sculpture is lit with thousands of LEDs, enveloping you in a fluid color field. Buttons mounted on the internal panels allow for deep interaction with the entire lighting system.
This interaction is the heart and soul of Enunciation. With each button press, you see an immediate reaction from the lights. Each press also changes the lighting forever. As people play with the buttons, our algorithm evolves to include their touch. Enunciation lets you articulate yourself with a giant field of light.
Enunciation is 14ft long, 9ft wide, and 9ft tall. Inside there is enough room for a group of ~10 people to play with the sculpture.
Taylor Dean Harrison
I’m an Oakland-based artist working with steel, wood, and light. I’ve brought my work to festivals nationwide, and for the past few years, I’ve made massive steel sculptures with seminal Burning Man artist, Michael Christian. With him, I’ve learned how the biggest and baddest art gets built in the harshest of environments.
Now, after years of pondering, dreaming, sketching, and positing, I finally decided to create my own large-scale work for Burning Man 2016. Making art objects with integrated lighting is my calling, and I love using color and motion to give people a unique experience.
About Our Team
We’re a team of Bay Area professional artists, fabricators, twiddlers, and tech wizards.
Your pledge will bridge the gap between our Burning Man grant and our total budget.
Lighting / Electronics: $2000
Steel and Laser Cutting: $5000
Kickstarter’s Cut: $800
Please help us bring Enunciation to Burning Man and beyond by sharing and funding our Kickstarter. By sharing our project with others, you connect us with an even larger network of people interested in supporting large-scale art. By backing us, you’re giving us the final financial freedom we need to realize our vision. Thank you!
Risks and challenges
As we continue our work on Enunciation, I am certain small challenges will reveal themselves. Our biggest challenge will be assembling the sculpture in the Black Rock Desert. While the desert floor is flat, the lack of a level surface will change how Enunciation goes together. To head off any trouble, we are working to transport the bottom perimeter of the sculpture in as few pieces as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
