Singapore's first mystery man had the nation in wonder
Singapore's first mystery man had the nation in wonder

Since the appearance of the world’s first superhero 60 years ago, Singapore has remained free of the troubles associated to super-powered beings. That is all about to change thanks to Fandi bin Ishak.

Fandi, a 26-year old Singaporean working in New York, misses his family, his friends, and, most of all, the food in Singapore. Moreover, he misses the safety of living in a country that didn’t have nuclear-powered beings frequently battling robot monsters the size of HDB flats.

However, caught in a battle between the extraterrestrial Starlight and her nemesis Deadstar, Fandi finds himself gifted with the same powers as the alien hero and locked in battle against a cosmic threat.

Swearing to himself that he would stay out of further super-powered antics, Fandi returns to quiet Singapore… unfortunately, simply having powers seems to have made him a magnet for trouble.

Thankfully, he finds himself equipped to battle these threats as

Greetings from Singapore!

I'm Ryan Mennen, a writer of things that can be written—from feature film treatments to thought-provoking articles, from epic poetry to my friends' phone numbers on the back of bus seats!

(Note: I have yet to write a single feature film treatment, thought-provoking article, or epic poem.)

While I have spent most of my career as a script doctor for television and comic books, it's been a long time dream to create a superhero that embodies Singapore and Singaporeans.

So after decades of time spent in my Secret Writing Lab, I have finally created a superhero that I believe is not only relatable to Singaporeans, but also an interesting character that would engage readers and keep them invested in these tales.

The scripts for the first 6 issues have been written and now I plan on pulling together an art team to work on this project. While it has become somewhat of a norm that artists are paid only if a project is successful, it's not a practice that I think is particularly fair to the talents behind the product.

This Kickstarter campaign allows me to ensure that the artists working on this are fairly remunerated regardless of whether or not this series takes off.

While this campaign seeks to fund a black & white copy of Crimson Star #01, there is, in fact, a much longer term plan for the title.

With a total of 65 issues planned to outline the more significant points of Crimson Star’s superhero career, this campaign is the first step towards building a brand that can be financially sustained in other ways over a 5-year run.

These 65 issues are split into 60 standard issues and 5 annual special editions. The 60 issues are further split into 20 arcs, each arc 3 issue long. This structure is crucial to the long term plan for Crimson Star. With each arc, a new art team (penciller, inker, and colourist) will be introduced.

Not only will this allow for a fresh take on the art with each arc, but also create a platform for as many budding artists as possible to work on this homegrown title before, hopefully, moving on to greater projects.

While our goal of $5,000 is enough to get a complete, 20-page black & white issue produced, the aim is to set as solid a foundation for the series via this campaign. And that means, including reach goals that work towards producing more original content!

Here are some of our reach goals:

$8,888: Remember that black & white comic? It just got coloured!
$12'000: An 8-page short story crucial to the history of Crimson Star will be included.
$30,000: ALL THREE ISSUES of the first arc +the 8-page short story will be produced.

That's right, basically your $2 could potentially get you two copies of the first three issues (and a short story), all featuring Crimson Star: A Singaporean Superhero!

Risks and challenges

Truthfully, the biggest risk lies in this campaign reaching the stipulated goal but the funding doesn't come through. As a purely digital project with a system to distribute the completed product already in place, there really isn't much room for anything to go wrong.

Unless the internet gains sentience in the next few months and Skynet initiates a nuclear apocalypse that sees us all living underground for the rest of humanity's future.

So if you've ever wanted to have a superhero from our very own Singapore, help us by making sure that your pledge goes through!
