On May 9th at 11:38am, we reached the funding goal! I send out my thanks to all the initial backers.
Pedals and Pictures is a photography project which extends from my Detachment series. I started the project in 2010 when I got on a bus to Durango, Colorado and left there alone, on my bicycle. To continue this project, I need your help. This kickstarter funding will go towards the next trip, across North America! My bike needs some bicycle maintenance, film for my camera, money for processing, printing, and the bus ticket back east when it's all said and done.
On a bicycle, I am submerged rural America, I expect to capture autobiographical excerpts with universal character. The weather is relentless in every way. I live simply on the road, with just the necessities, coping with widely varying weather conditions while documenting the journey's landscapes and scenes. The passing landscape influences my evolving work. Experiencing a place on a bike is such a good pace to really get to know it and be able to reflect it accurately.
The Detachment Series: I capture scenes that are representative of my experiences and the people that I have met along the way. The anonymity of the subjects pictured adds to the sense of timelessness in the photographs. Check out more pictures at www.katwalton.com! Updates will be on the 'updates' page and on my blog at http://www.ensoleille87.blogspot.com
On July 1st, 2012, I will depart from my home in Syracuse, N.Y. and go to the east coast near Newark, NJ then start bicycling westward! I would like to take a northern route, but detours are welcome and distractions are inevitable. I estimate that I will ride 50 to 80 miles per day, with a day off every 3 or 4 days.
