About The Enrichment Project
The Enrichment Project traces the creative journeys of fifteen women-- dancers and aerialists, musicians and artists-- across nearly a decade, exploring the Touchstones they hold dear and the Radical Rituals they create onstage and, more significantly, offstage. The book asks the reader to journal along, approaching assumptions with curiosity and inspiring Radical Rituals in Creative Living.
Of course, this project didn't begin as a book. In 2010, I harbored this vague Desire to enrich my life in some way. I was anything but Present, describing my creative process as "assembly-line-like." I was distinctly out of Balance, possessing scant insight into my own patterns. And so I contacted a Circle of women, asking to pester them for a year with questions about their creative processes.
With astounding hubris, I assumed at the end of this first year that I'd write a meaningful thank you, choreograph something phenomenal, and move on, having "figured out" this creativity thing. Instead, I found myself exploring Compassion and Spirit, plagued by more questions than answers, with the nagging sensation that I was learning more than I bargained for: that creativity is healing, healing is utterly creative, and that the Radical Rituals I was beginning to develop were indeed splashing the black-and-white of my life with more vibrant hues and patterns. I began writing to understand this Integration.
What Does This Fund?
Nine years later, I sent a completed manuscript to my editor and sat back to contemplate next steps. Individuals outside of our immediate Circle are keen to read these words-- because while dance acted as a portal for this investigation, the lessons learned are much more universal-- so I'm beginning to query agents and publishers.
The query and proposal process considers the book from a sales and marketing perspective, essentially asking another party to invest in the process. Publishers assume up-front costs for proofreading, cover design, interior design for attractive typography and image placement that also reduces eyestrain, ebook conversion, production management costs to file for copyright and secure an ISBN, and finally, the biggest wildcard in costs: publicity. Ironically, with new print-on-demand options, the actual printing occurs as books are ordered, removing up-front investments in this last and most tangible step.
The scope of these efforts are why I'd like to partner with a publisher. While self-publishing is a possibility, I have less knowledge and fewer resources to make that path successful. Self-publishing would involve me assuming all the tasks and costs above, which I've priced out as starting around $16K for the current size and complexity of the manuscript.
And so, I'm looking to make this manuscript as good as it can be, with a well-researched and compelling query letter and book proposal. Over the last few years, I've been working through a series of developmental editing rounds with the phenomenal Ali Shaw of Indigo Editing. She is currently focused on the precision of line edits, and expects to complete her editing round by Valentine's Day, 2019.
I am seeking to fund half of these expected editing expenses ($2,170), plus up-front material costs for the rewards offered ($1,680, predominantly for sticker, candle, gemstone, and other material costs) for a total of $3,500. My stretch goals are to raise another $770 to engage Ali to assist with the proposal process, which involves curating a list of potential publishers, and creating a 13-part book proposal with market and competitive analyses and sample chapters.
Any additional funding raised will go straight into funding the full cost of this editing round, adding more rewards like patches and journal books, printing and mailing proposals, and other promotional and event costs.
What Rewards Are Offered?
Because I do not have a publishing path as yet, besides soft copies of the chapters selected to include with the book's proposal, the rewards I can offer focus around the exquisite sigils designed for this book by Teejei Brigham, and some of the Radical Rituals that have grown out of this work.
In exchange for supporting the Enrichment Project, share one of your creative intentions with me, and I will burn a bay leaf to recognize your own big dreams. I'll send along a short video snippet of me doing so, for remembrance.
Enrichment Sigil Stickers
Receive three stickers featuring the glorious Touchstone sigils that Teejei Brigham has designed for this book. There are seven in total: Desire, Presence, Balance, Circle, Compassion, Spirit, and Integration.
Touchstone Sigil Necklace
Wear your intention close to your heart. The seven sigils designed by Teejei Brigham have been cast into pendants, portable reminders of the lessons from Desire, Presence, Balance, Circle, Compassion, Spirit, and Integration.
Radical Ritual Sigil Candle
Honor your creative intentions with an 8" tall candle in glass adorned with one of the Touchstone sigils designed for this book by Teejei Brigham. There are seven in total: Desire, Presence, Balance, Circle, Compassion, Spirit, and Integration. Brandy Long created this candle for our Circle the winter of 2018, and it's such a powerful new light to hold.
Whenever our Sister Circle gathers, we are often treated to handmade necklaces by Jaidra DuRant of Niad Studio to mark the occasion. Jaidra uses semi-precious stones, intricate copper wire wrapping, hand-stamped and glazed clay pieces, and leather to create warm, earthy, one-of-a-kind pieces. She has graciously gifted these rewards, for which I'm still in a bit of awe.
Basic Tarot Reading
Schedule a virtual or in-person tarot reading of a single card. Readings will be approximately 30 minutes in length and you will receive both a recording of the session and a copy of the card itself. I am offering one Basic Reading a moon cycle, and it's a great introduction to the archetypes of the cards in our lives.
I began working with the Tarot at a very young age, and the cards don't so much "tell the future" as they unlock questions when I'm stuck, offer guidance when I have a weighty topic to contemplate, and suggest ways for me to identify and work through different patterns in my life.
Shamanic Tarot Reading
In addition to everything included with a basic reading, this offering includes a extra journey work to personalize the experience, recruit additional support, and add memorable depth to the reading. Readings can be scheduled in-person or remotely. I am offering one Shamanic Tarot Reading a moon cycle, and they are a wonderful way to kickstart your own creative projects.
Shamanism is an ancient practice of using direct revelations to guide and heal a community. I don't claim the title of shaman, but I am trained in using shamanic journeying techniques to bring back additional intelligence to augment a reading. Journeying enriches the reading and the guidance given.
Radical Ritual Tarot Reading
Fully supported Tarot reading that includes shamanic journeying, a copy of your card, plus custom handpainted jar, gemstone bracelet, and painting to re-mind and re-member the Radical Ritual we design together. I am offering one Radical Ritual per moon cycle, and it is my absolute favorite way to work with these archetypal energies.
The Tarot asks us to confront uncomfortable and challenging truths sometimes; working through these energies can be taxing. The Tarot also asks us to celebrate the daring and richness of life; we are often more ill-equipped to encounter joy than we are sorrow. A full Radical Ritual offers you all the insight and wisdom of a shamanic reading with the tools and support for working through that energy on a day-to-day, and often breath-by-breath, basis.
This will not be a reading you forget.
Custom Enrichment Sigil Journal
Brandy Long decorates blank journals, painstakingly shaping polymer clay, incorporating raised patterns and found objects, then painting and embellishing the final result. This reward is limited to seven of Brandy's journals inspired by Teejei's Enrichment Sigils: one for each Touchstone of Desire, Presence, Balance, Circle, Compassion, Spirit, and Integration. These books are one-of-a-kind magic to capture your intentions and dreams, or perhaps to begin writing a book of your own!
Risks and challenges
Risks to the project include materials and sourcing, and the completion of all seven Touchstone sigils. Teejei is finalizing graphic files and digitizing the remaining two sketches for Desire and Presence; however there are already multiple options to choose from.
I am investigating additional rewards -- such as custom sewn patches and embellished journal books-- in case people would be interested in enjoying these Touchstone sigils in different formats.
Tarot readings depend on scheduling across 2019. To prevent burnout, I will be offering three readings-- one of each type-- each moon cycle. Upon selecting a Tarot reward, you and I will identify the time period, and we can always get more precise with our calendars as it approaches. Although scheduling these out across the year may be seen as a risk, I believe it also offers an excellent opportunity to plan one for a birthday, anniversary, event, or even to offer as a gift.
And finally, the most significant risk is the gauging of the audience for this effort. No money or rewards change hands if we fail to meet our goal. I worry-- because this crowdfunding effort does not guarantee publication, and I can't promise an advance copy of the book itself-- that people will be less likely to sponsor it. It is my hope that the beauty and significance of the rewards offered are, in essence, meaningful enough on their own to help sustain this project as it transitions into this next phase.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
