About this project
As photographers, we spend a ton of cash on beautifully engineered gear; steel and carbon fibre tripods, gorgeous cameras, industrial lightstands.... then for much of its life -when we're not out shooting- we hide it away, unused and unseen.
With Phlite, you can show off your camera gear. All the time!
Phlite transforms your camera gear - your tripod, your camera, your lightstand - into a beautiful floor lamp, table lamp and desk lamp.
When you want to use your gear, Philte slips off quickly and easily. When it’s not on your camera gear it sits flush on a table or shelf and is still a stunning lamp. When you're done shooting, Phlite clips back on easily too.
Here's what people are saying about Phlite:

On and off your camera gear, Philte looks amazing thanks to our attention to detail including:

- Maker Alert! download the shade pattern (see below) for FREE and make your own bespoke shade!
Show off your gorgeous gear.... Let there be Phlite!
Phlite comes in large and small sizes. Large is perfect for tripods and lightstands, small is ideal for your cameras – but there are no limits: large looks great on bigger cameras and small looks cool on smaller tripods and stands!
Large Phlite includes the unique quick-fit clip so you don't get into a tangle clipping it on and off your tripods and lightstands. The clip is available separately if you need spares. Large is 28cm diameter by 25cm tall. Small is 16cm diameter by 20cm tall.
How does it work? For tripods and lightstands, the patent pending Phlite clip we've designed features DualThread™, so Phlite fits easily and securely to anything with a 1/4-20" tripod thread or larger 3/8" lightstand thread.
Thanks to Phlite’s ISO standard hotshoe it fits natively to your cameras too. Vintage, retro or bang-up-to-date digital SLR, Phlite turns all your gear into something you can enjoy all the time.
With a Phlite lamp in your den, you'll never be short on conversation again. (Ooo! That rhymes!)
-- Bespoke Lamp Shades --
You're a creative type too, right? A bit of a maker? Great news! As soon as Phlite is funded, you'll be able to download - for free - the pattern for the Phlite shades to make your own... Here's one featuring a world map we downloaded from the interwebs.
Use your own photography, make different patterns, display your kids’ art, even make a double-walled shade to take slides, negatives and old X rays!
-- Which countries will Phlite work in? --
Initially, Phlite will be available with US and UK plugs. The US Phlite is UL certified for an E26 screw fit bulb (not included) and the UK Phlite is CE certified for an E27 screw fit bulb (not included).
UK plugs are standard in the UK, EIRE, most Middle East countries, Cyprus, Malta, Hong Kong, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and more.
US plugs are standard in USA, Canada, Korea, South America, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam and more.
Are you on the EU continent? We're planning on launching Phlite with your plug fitted in 2014. In the meantime, you can order a UK Phlite and change the plug when it arrives.
Rated for 120V in the US and 240V in the UK, if you change the plug on Phlite, or fit an adapter, it will work anywhere.
-- Who's behind Phlite? --
Phlite is another invention by award-winning inventor and ex-pro photographer James Madelin.
In 2006 James and his wife Naomi founded enlight photo to bring unique photo gear to the world. Since then, the business has grown to a small team spread across the world handling logistics, patents, graphic design, marketing and all the operations needed to keep the machine working smoothly.
Don't just take our word for it... enlight photo has won several awards over the years we’ve been in business, endorsing us as an innovative company you can trust. Our motto?
Essential gear for your photo life.™

-- Design --
We've been working on Phlite with our designers in the UK for a year now. Our designers in China have been working on it for nearly six months, tweaking the original designs for smooth, beautiful assembly and the high quality components that we've chosen.
Most projects on Kickstarter haven't gone through the important "Design-For-Manufacture" stage where you have to re-design your initial designs for mass production. Phlite has. All we're waiting for is your support and the moment Phlite is funded we'll begin the manufacturing process. The funding will pay for tooling and the first production run.
We've been testing Phlite for months for durability and most importantly, to make sure it can handle a photographer's lifestyle and keep looking great.
In summary, the design is 100% complete.
-- Manufacturing --
We've been making gear like Phlite since 2008 in an ISO:9001 certified factory in China that we've visited in person several times. The gear we make there has won awards and is made to the highest standards. Wherever we can, we minimise packaging and waste.
We can assure you that it's a great place to be.... any tales you may have heard about horrid working conditions do not apply in our factory.
We're confident we can deliver a great, top-quality product to you within the timeline we’ve outlined below. On the other hand, experience has taught us that projects can hit delays even when they're nearly over
But we've been there and done this many, many times before. We've never been more capable of handling any issues we might face. We know we can meet any challenge that might crop up.
And because we've already done so much hard work on this project, we expect it to be smooth running from here.
Building the tooling: 6 weeks
Checking and refining tools for fit and finish: 2 weeks
Chinese New Year Holiday: 2 weeks
Final checking and assembly
Your Phlite TAKES OFF: early April 2014
We'd love to say Phlite will be on your desk in January or even February, but we're being conservative and generous with our project timeline so we don't over-promise and deliver late.
Manufacturing is the only area with risk factors beyond our control. Our planning, established processes and relationships make us totally confident your Phlite will land on time.
-- Fulfilment --
We've been supplying gear to our customers for nearly five years. Thanks to our relationships with warehouses in the UK and USA, we've sent tens of thousands of customer orders out on time.
Unexpected things always happen, and we're proudly fast, honest and helpful when any issue arises. There are several ways you can reach us, by email, on Twitter or through our Facebook page. Or here on Kickstarter of course.
The biggest risk here is a Customs delay on the way to our warehouses from our factory, but that has never lasted more than a few days and is factored into our timelines.
In summary, our logistics operations are reliable and efficient.
What are you waiting for? Choose a pledge and we'll reserve your Phlite!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Kickstarter forbids creating multiple rewards for the same thing... but you're in luck!
Either pledge for the same reward twice or adjust your pledge to reflect the right amount during the pledge process (you can edit the amount after you've chosen your pledge). Then let us know either with a message or at the end when we send out the survey... Simple!
We're offering Phlite with FREE shipping to the US or UK.
The Kickstarter system won't let us specify countries for free shipping other than the UK, so if you're in the US you'll have to include it in your pledge. But don't worry, we'll refund your shipping in January.
We plan to either do this either through Paypal or by sending you a $5 Amazon voucher (or similar). We'll ask you in an email how you'd prefer us to do this in January when the project has closed.
Yes! Thanks to the way we designed it with this in mind, making your own Phlite shade is easy. As soon as we reach our funding goal, we'll publish the free downloadable plans.... and we'll also launch a video.
There are several ways to do it... you can print direct onto the shade, or stick photos to the shade, or you can even make a double-walled shade to fit photos and your art in between the layers.
They look AMAZING!

We agonised over this decision, but discovered in development that this is a huge challenge. To make Phlite, we have to commit to making thousands and thousands of each version.
We chose to launch on Kickstarter because combining interior lighting design and photography gear has never been done before, and we wanted to make sure that you also love our crazy awesome idea.
So we had to make the tough choice to limit the plug options at this first stage.
The good news is that the UK version is CE certified, so you can get one of those and change the plug when it arrives. They fit any EU standard E27 screw-fit bulb.
We'll be monitoring this really closely and may make the launch of EU plugs a stretch goal. Either way, rest assured Phlite will launch for EU, AU and NZ plugs in 2014 if we hit our funding goal!
