Mythology is timeless. We've been telling the same stories for thousands of years because they speak to us in a way that no other stories can. I have always loved mythologies, and that's what inspired me to create this anthology.
My name is Caleb Palmquist, and I am the creator and editor of Modern Mythology. I gathered a team of writers and artists from around the world, and challenged them to create stories that retold classic hero myths set in the modern day. They delivered in spades. This is a 160+ page softcover book featuring 17 stories by 29 talented creators, plus a collection of incredible pinups by additional independent comic book artists. It is also packed full of facts about the myths in the book including information about the cultures, histories, and storytelling traditions they come from.
Creators like Greg Anderson Elysee, Angela Oddling, Noah Mease, and so many more brought their A game to tell stories that range from somber and beautiful to lighthearted and sad. The stories are inspired by hero myths from all around the world, from ancient Mesopotamia to ancient Greece, and everything in between.
So, what are the stories?
Glad you asked. There are seventeen total stories in Modern Mythology: The Hero's Journey, including an exclusive 14-page Is'nana the Were-Spider story from Greg Anderson Elysee and David Brame. Here's a quick rundown of all the stories:
Will This Book Teach Me Things?
If you want it to! Every story in the book is preceded and followed by a textbook page that will teach you the basics about the myth, the mythology of the culture it comes from, and other interesting and relevant facts. You'll find information about cultural influences, the evolution of stories and faiths, geography, linguistics, and more. There are even recommendations for further reading after each story, in case you want to learn more! Here's a sample of the textbook pages:

Where Does the Money Go?
We are asking for a lot of money - more money than we've ever asked for before. There is a good reason for that. In addition to paying for the books to be printed and shipped to the backers, every contributor is either getting copies of the book (to sell, or whatever they'd like to do with them) or a monetary payout. Because we have over 29 contributors including pinup artists, that adds up. If we exceed our funding goal, all the contributors will get additional monetary compensation. We (Enkidu Studio) will not be putting any of the money we make from this Kickstarter into our own pockets. Here's a quick breakdown of where the money will go:
Want a sneak peak? Here are some pages from a few of the many stories appearing in Modern Mythology: The Hero's Journey:
The Hunter and the Lion by Greg Anderson Elysee and David Brame:
Jason and the Golden Jacket by Angela Oddling:
Hercules and the Wild Hunt by Jonathan Fisher:
Theseus, by Russell Nohelty and Nicolas Touris:
Modern Mythology will feature a collection of incredible pinups by amazing artists putting their own spin on mythological characters. We will reveal more pinups as the campaign progresses. Here are the ones we have revealed so far:
Risks and challenges
This is my fourth Kickstarter project. I have a reputation for delivering quality products in a timely manner, and I don't anticipate many problems fulfilling this project. The book is already completed, so as soon as the funds from the Kickstarter are delivered the files will be sent to the printer, and the books should be in the hands of the backers by the end of the calendar year. There is always a chance that unexpected problems will cause delays, but my team and I are prepared and we expect to deliver on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
