It was 1963 when California filmmaker Bruce Brown and two surfers, Robert August and Mike Hynson, set off on their famous journey around the world to catch the perfect wave. With only $50,000 capital and his film cameras, Bruce documented their adventures on film. Their trip has gone down in surf history in the film classic "The Endless Summer". When the first screenings of "The Endless Summer" were shown in auditoriums and schools in Southern California in 1964, a film craze ensued that no one had ever expected. The enthusiasm of its audiences, surfers and non-surfers alike, has not waned to this day. Fifty years later, we are celebrating this worldwide film icon with The Endless Summer 50th Anniversary Box Set.
The Endless Summer 50th Anniversary Box Set includes a book, tentatively titled Barefoot Maverick, that recounts personal anecdotes during filming, Bruce’s rise to becoming a renowned lifestyle-documentary filmmaker and "The Endless Summer" film’s impact on audiences around the world.
In 2013, a young, enthusiastic graphic artist in Spain wrote to us that he had designed and created a book about "The Endless Summer" for his final thesis project at graphic design college. Upon meeting the artist Manuel Serra and seeing his beautiful, hand-bound book and the content he had assembled, we were impressed and so enthusiastic that we thought we should actually publish something similar for the 50th anniversary of Bruce's classic. Impressed by Manuel’s work, we asked him to join our team to work on the project with us.
Shortly thereafter, we connected with Integrated Communications Los Angeles (ICLA – a design firm), to assist us in preparing the book for publication and further developed the idea of producing a collectible anniversary box edition.
With Manuel and ICLA, we have spent over two years compiling the elements that will finally comprise the limited, numbered edition of The Endless Summer 50th Anniversary Box Set. Only 1,964 sets will be available to the public to exclusive outlets: online, at surf shops, and brick and mortar boutique shops.
The edition celebrates the year 1964 when Bruce began narrating the film and testing it with devoted audiences. With him, we have curated and preserved photographs, letters, posters, and even two reels of 35mm film from theatrical screenings of the movie. We spent months thumbing through various swatches and fabric samples, even having prototypes made, to ensure that the look and feel of the encasing and papers would be aesthetically in keeping with the content.
We are pleased the chosen materials and papers fulfill this criterion. For example, the box will have a texture similar to striations of sand at the beach and for the book Barefoot Maverick we adopted Manuel’s concept of a two-sided book: one side to feature the trip chronologically and the other side is reserved for accounts of Bruce Brown's early work and the "The Endless Summer". We also incorporated the idea of alternating types of papers (opaque and translucent) and page formats (full illustrated half-page inserts and fold-out pages) that we liked so much in Manuel’s prototype.
The box is a one-of-a-kind collectible that provides a unique sampling of items and documents: Each set includes a five-frame clip taken from an original 35mm filmstrip filmed by Bruce Brown in the late sixties. Collectors and fans will appreciate this small piece of history of an international craze for the sport and for the film itself. Other items in the box include copies of letters written from South Africa when Bruce, Robert and Mike were traveling in 1963, flip-books showcasing the best wipe-outs and Mike's surfing at Cape St. Francis, ticket stubs from various screenings, etc.
The book includes a Certificate of Authenticity. This document, placed at the beginning of the text, has the signatures of director Bruce Brown, surfers Robert August and Mike Hynson, and of the artist John Van Hamersveld who designed the film poster. The document certifies that the book is one of 1,964 produced and authorized by Bruce Brown Films. With the help of The Surfing Heritage and Culture Center in San Clemente, California, Bruce Brown Films was granted access to its entire collection of items belonging to Bruce – notably his Bolex camera and editing table. Most significantly, of course, we were granted unparalleled access to Bruce's personal archives that allowed us to digitally preserve and restore many never-before-seen photographs that tell the story of his professional development and filming of "The Endless Summer".
Your contributions will secure the production of The Endless Summer 50th Anniversary Box Set and publication of the accompanying book.
Time and technology are needed to finish the project: editing, text layout and archiving of photographs and documents that will be digitally reprinted in the book and box set. For this we need to purchase special equipment - scanners and external hard-drives that will allow us to backup and store the enormous bulk of documents we have collected However, the actual production of the box set, the printing of the book and subsequent shipping from our manufacturer comprise are largest overhead costs. Barefoot Maverick will be printed in China on 100% rag paper made in Germany. Due to the limited editions, the cost of the production is estimated at over $100,000. Each edition will be a one-of-a-kind item to cherish in your home for years to come.
We have some special tiers of rewards for you to buy for yourself, or even as a gift for a friend or family member. Anything from a handwritten postcard sent from Bruce Brown Films, to having the first-ever chance at pre-ordering the entirety of the box set with the opportunity to have your name placed on the inside. Have a look at our exciting breakdown! No matter the level, your contributions help make this all possible.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge will be timing. There is a five month production window and we are getting close to our deadline of releasing the book mid-June, 2016. With the help of ICLA, we are confident that once our successful fundraising efforts enable the next stage in production to print and bind, we will have the collection and it's launch date at the time we had planned for.
We are still awaiting the forward text, and some other written contributions from those involved in the making of some parts of the film's construction and promotion. With a revised schedule in place, we are assured that these additions will be made and reviewed by our editor rather soon.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
