What this project is all about:

Encyclopedia Botanica is a listener-supported podcast about edible and cut flower gardening. Each episode is a lively conversation between me (Hilary Dahl) and a guest contributor. We break down seemingly complicated garden topics so that anyone can feel empowered to take on new projects and further develop their green thumb. Our goal is to make each episode educational and provide practical information for gardeners of all levels.

I first launched Encyclopedia Botanica in the summer of 2016. I had been dreaming of creating a podcast for years and my husband and business partner, Colin McCrate, encouraged me to finally just do it. It started out really simple, short 10-15 minute episodes, each one focusing on a specific crop. Since then, the format has continued to evolve and expand. This coming season, I plan to interview experts from across the country on a variety of new subjects. We’ll take an in-depth look at wine grapes, fruit tree care, container gardening for edibles, backyard production-scale cut flower gardening, and other really exciting topics!

What to expect in 2019:

The goal for the 2019 season is to create a minimum of 10 subject-specific episodes {NOW 11- see updates for more info!}. Each episode will be accompanied by show notes for your reference on the Seattle Urban Farm Co. blog. If we reach our Kickstarter goal, we'll start releasing new episodes as soon as March 2019!

Confirmed Topics and Guests for 2019 (so far...):

  •  Edible Flowers // Rosalind Creasy // Rosalind is the award-winning author of 16 books on gardening and cooking, including Edible Landscaping, arguably the most popular book on the subject (and one I’ve had since college!). If you don't know about Ros, you need to tune into this episode, she's a living legend in the gardening community.
  •  Container Gardening // Sara Gasbarra // saragasbarra.com // Sara is the founder and “lead garden girl” of Verdura, a full-service garden design company that cultivates culinary gardens for chefs, restaurants and hotels. She specializes in creating a season-long garden plan specifically tailored to the needs of a restaurant kitchen, sourcing unique and rare varieties of plants and vegetables, organic growing practices, custom designed irrigation systems, and urban farming in unconventional spaces. She also has a stunning Instagram feed that you should definitely check out!
  •  Growing Wine Grapes // Betsey Wittick // bainbridgevineyards.com // Betsey holds a Masters degree in Horticulture from Cornell University. She began growing grapes and making wine in 1989. Betsey is the lead winemaker and viticulturist at Bainbridge Vineyards, and is the proprietor of the small-scale vegetable operation Laughing Crow Farm. Betsey is committed to seeing local food production remain a viable livelihood and is an all-around horticultural Jedi. If it was up to me, I'd do an entire season of podcast with Betsey.
  •  Backyard-Scale Production Flower Gardening // Kelly Sullivan // botaniqueflowers.com // Kelly is the owner and Lead Designer of Botanique, a full-service floral design studio in Seattle, Washington. She creates custom bouquets, arrangements, and flower installations for weddings and events. She also offers workshops focused on sustainable design techniques. Kelly maintains a backyard cutting garden stocked with her favorite blooms. This episode is going to be dangerous because, after hearing about Kelly's cutting garden, we're ALL going to be scrambling to squeeze more flowers into our growing space.
  •  Vegetable Garden Wisdom // Kelly Smith Trimble // kellysmithtrimble.com // Kelly is the author of Vegetable Gardening Wisdom. She has been a lifestyle editor for nearly 20 years, working for brands such as HGTV, Southern Living, and the National Park Foundation. A master gardener, she grows vegetables, herbs, and flowers in her Knoxville, Tennessee suburban backyard. We're all here to learn, so sharpen your pencils and get ready to soak up a heavy dose of Kelly's garden knowledge.
  •  Backyard Fruit Trees // Tara Weaver // Tara is a freelance writer, editor, and author of The Butcher & The Vegetarian and Orchard House: How a Neglected Garden Taught One Family to Grow, a memoir that chronicles how she and her family attempted to revive a long neglected Seattle garden and orchard.
  • But there's more...I’m waiting to hear from you on topics you’d like us to cover in the remaining episodes!

Stretch goals:

  •  $12,500 = Question and Answer Episodes! If we reach this stretch goal we’ll add in three of our ever-popular Q + A Episodes, for a total of 13 episodes this season. We’ll source questions from YOU, the supporters of this podcast. If we reach this goal you’ll receive an email asking for you to submit two of your most burning gardening questions. We’ll do our best to answer as many of the questions as possible over the course of the three Q+A Episodes (Q+A Episodes are co-hosted by Hilary Dahl and Colin McCrate).
  •  $14,000 = Even More Episodes! If we reach this stretch goal we’ll add in two more single-subject episodes, for a total of 15 episodes this season.
  • Any funds raised over $14,000 will be used to upgrade our recording equipment and improve the overall production-quality of the podcast.

The rewards:

This project is all about learning, so instead of including a bunch of "things" for us to give you as rewards, we've created more ways to share garden knowledge and garden-inspired experiences:

- Gardening Resource PDF Packet: We've complied some of Seattle Urban Farm Co.'s most coveted resources to share with you! The packet includes:

  • 4x8 foot raised bed construction plans
  • Raspberry trellis construction plans
  • Home-made balanced fertilizer recipe
  • Home-made balanced vegan fertilizer recipe
  • Annual Crop Checklist- to help you decide what crops to prioritize planting in your garden!

- Sweet peas: Below is a photos of sweet peas grown from Hilary's 2017 saved seed. The 2018 batch should be similar in bloom quality and stem length, and come in a mix of colors! All seed is saved from Spencer varieties.

- Educational Webinars:  Each year we host a series of live, online webinars covering a variety of garden topics. The webinars range from 1-2 hours and are recorded so you can watch them at your own convenience. If you join us during the live broadcast, you're invited to submit questions that the host will answer during the session. This year we're offering webinars on the following topics:

  • Plan and Prep Your Edible Garden
  • Vegetable Garden Soil Health 101
  • Harvesting Techniques For Home Vegetable Gardeners
  • Raspberries, Blueberries and Strawberries
  • Crop Planning For PNW Vegetable Gardens

For more info on our educational webinars, visit: www.seattleurbanfarmco.com/upcoming-events

- Our Books: Food Grown Right, In Your Backyard and High-Yield Vegetable Gardening

- Cocktail Hour and Tour at Bastille Cafe & Bar: Bring a friend and spend an hour walking around the Bastille rooftop garden and chatting with Hilary and your fellow Seattle vegetable gardeners. The tour is scheduled for the week of July 15th.

Risks and challenges

The goal of this Kickstarter campaign is to start the next podcast season with a defined budget and clear scope of work. Over the past three seasons, I've tried to make as many episodes as possible on a very limited budget.

I love making this podcast and am beyond grateful to all of those who have supported this project thus far via Patreon. However, I've found that it just isn't practical for me to continue making new episodes without more substantial financial support. Going forward, I just won't be able to prioritize the work it takes to produce the show without your help.

The main risk I can foresee is that a guest expert that has already committed to joining me this season may have to cancel (but we all LOVE talking about gardening, so why would they do that?). This would require me to find a new guest or change the content of that episode. Other than that, I am confident that I will be able to release all of the episodes planned for this season and then begin planning for next year.
