World's first mobile phone charger that switches automatically off when you unplug your phone - and back on, when you reattach it! Read more

About this project
When you plug in a mobile phone or tablet it connects to the grid and charges your device. To stop charging and turn the ASMO off, just pull the ASMO’s cable off from your phone or tablet. You use it exactly like your old charger.
The idea behind ASMO Charger is simple – yet it’s a gadget that has the potential to revolutionize the electricity consumption in the whole world. We want the ASMO technology to be standard of chargers with every big mobile manufacturer. Then we can really make a change in global energy savings.
This is a big goal that we cannot reach on our own – we need your help. With every order of an ASMO Charger, we can make a statement for better, more energy efficient and greener electronics.
Our pledge is to continue design new energy efficient solutions for households. Next we extend this technology to laptop chargers.
Looking for a safer charger, Asmo found that none existed, and that large mobile phone manufacturers had tried —unsuccessfully— make chargers that shut down once a mobile device is disconnected.
Asmo set himself a challenge: Invent a charger which does't consume any standby power and minimizes risk of fire. After two years of development, Asmo invented the ASMO charger. Today, we like to tell you more about how the ASMO can change everyones energy conservation habits, and take a step together towards a cleaner, greener world.
- The ASMO Charger will start charging when you plug the end of its cable to your phone.
- The ASMO will shut down when you unplug your phone from it, totally isolating itself from the electric grid; that way, it won’t waste any energy and offers much better fire safety than regular chargers.
- If your mobile device battery is completely discharged or you don’t have a device compatible with the ASMO Charger’s auto-start function, just press a button on the ASMO Charger to start charging.
- ASMO Charger isolates itself from electric grid by relay.
Will the ASMO work with my phone?
The ASMO Charger can charge most electronic devices with a USB power source, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and android smart phones, tablets, MP3 players, and cameras.
The ‘Automatic stop’ function works with all mobile devices that accept USB power for charging. The patented ‘Automatic Start’ function works—for example—with the following popular devices:
- The Apple iPhone 4, 5, and up
- The Apple iPads
- The Samsung Galaxy S2, S3, S4, and S5.
For a list of all the devices compatible with the ASMO’s automatic start function, please visit http://www.asmocharger.com/compatible/
Please ask us if you have any questions about your device’s compatibility with the ASMO Charger! We’re still testing the ASMO Charger on multiple devices and will keep updating the list throughout the Kickstarter and in the future.
Hi, my name’s Asmo Saloranta. I’m the inventor of the ASMO charger. I made the first working prototype of the ASMO in October 2013! Since then, I've had quite a ride taking this first step to bringing the ASMO Charger to the market. My vision and nature of the project have attracted some awesome people to join on journey making the world a greener place, one charger at a time. I’d love you to become an ASMO advocate too! Without the goodwill of my team, their family members, and all of our new supporters around the world, I've wouldn’t have made it this far.
The ASMO prototype is at the proof-of-concept stage and is being tested on multiple devices. The prototype was made by Haltian ltd. Any final design changes will not cause any production delay as the hardware design itself has been approved.
Production is set for all the parts necessary for the charger, including the ASMO itself, its packaging, and a container. The manufacturing is taking place entirely in Oulu, Finland, a city known for being one of the world’s leading mobile technology development hubs.
The following is a detailed timeline for the manufacture and release of the ASMO:
Funds from the Kickstarter will be used to put the finishing touches on the design of the ASMO charger’s electronics, to complete the required certifications, and to initiate manufacturing of the ASMO Charger. All the costs have been carefully calculated. Our partner company Haltian ltd, a company established by ex-Nokia professionals, will handle all the manufacturing and necessary certifications. Haltian are among the world’s most expert electronics manufacturers and have everything necessary to drive this project to the finish line with the really high quality product we know ASMO users will love.
Haltian makes top-class mobile products and offers brilliant service development, from a defined vision to innovative design, creatively realizing mobile and sensor technology needs and placing a high focus on craftsmanship. With over 900 years of wireless industry experience between its employees, Haltian design innovative mobile products and offer really forward-thinking engineering services.

Ladies and Gentlemen, We have a Stretch Goal!
Risks and challenges
As with any new project, the ASMO charger project faces several key risks and challenges. The primary risks are in ensuring that ASMO chargers are compatible with every type of mobile device.
Some risks are associated with delivering the finished product within a certain time frame. We’ve minimized those risks by contracting the manufacturing work with Haltian Ltd www.haltian.com , a reliable and experienced partner, to ensure that everything goes according to plan. However, anything can happen when dealing with global certifications and authorities. We’ll keep all our backers fully informed and updated as we finalize details with our manufacturing partner, receive regulatory approvals from the FCC and CE, and are ready to start production.
"Auto-on" feature is not possible to make with standard USB cable, so we needed to make it fixed. You can choose an ASMO Charger with a Micro-USB, an Apple 30-pin, or an Apple Lightning cable.
Our first goal is to get the production started and we decided to begin with standard EU and US plugs. UK Plug has always been a part of our plans, somewhere in the future. However, due to the high demand we have promised the following:
If we'll be able to gather $100K with this campaign, we'll start producing UK plugs in the first wave as well!
You can choose any cables you like. With packages that contain many ASMOs you can select a different cable for every charger if you like.
Apple Lightning and 30-pin are for Apple products and Micro-USB is basically for all other phones.
The ASMO Charger can charge most electronic devices with a Micro-USB power source, including smart phones, tablets, MP3 players, and cameras.
The "Auto-on" feature works with at least on all the devices listed here:
All ASMO Chargers are manufactured in Finland, close to our headquarters. This way it is easy for us to ensure the high quality of the end product - for example fire safety is a very important thing for us!
There is no use of child labor and no factory roofs are collapsing in the head of employees. We'll make sure that manufacturing is as ecological as possible.
Unfortunately Finland is safe, yet super expensive country to manufacture anything and shipping costs are also very, very high - this is why the prices are high as well.
All money from Kickstarter will be put to manufacturing ASMO Chargers only.
No, ASMO technology is unique on the market.
There are chargers on the market that automatically stop when the phone has been unplugged, but they do not have the Auto-on feature and need to be turned back on manually.
There are also some chargers which automatically start, but all those are equipped with battery which starts charging again when phone is attached.
ASMO is first charger to use electricity from phone's own battery and is totally isolated from electric grid in standby mode.
What if my phone is really empty and there's no battery left at all? Will ASMO know to start charging when I plug in my phone?
In this case the AUTO ON -feature does not work. But don't worry, if your battery is totally dead, just press a button on ASMO and it will start charging again.
