"Enigma of Being Awake" is a 2016 American short film starring SAMANIA (Samira Mahboub + Ania Catherine).
"For most of history, Anonymous was a woman" - Virginia Woolf
Let's rewind back to 2002.
A rebellious 13-year old girl empties spray cans across Cairo and Berlin writing personal, yet conscientiously radical epigrams. Young Charlie Ali tags as an anonymous juvenile figure, "QAMAR" (Qamar القمر = Moon) and dreams to move to the fine art capital of the world, NYC.
Fast forward - 2015. Egyptian-German artist Charlie, 27, lives in Brooklyn, NY. While touring the U.S. with her latest exhibition, Charlie meets an irresistible choreographer named Lux Bernal. The encounter of these two souls changes Charlie forever.

Also a graduate of FIDM, Stephanie Surtida is a fashion illustrator and trend forecaster living in Los Angeles. She brings a method of "intuitive illustrating" to her work where it doesn't involve editing or erasing in order to allow for human error. It leaves her illustrations feeling unique and quirky just the way she likes it!
Tyler Teran is a Philadelphia based visual artist. COMPLEX Style describes his work as "dominated by strong lines of his city's architecture... dreamlike works that almost seem believable. His ability to make you fall for the spaces he creates in his pieces is uncanny."

I am proud to say that this film is being made among friends.
Our film is dedicated to Dr. Carmichael Peters who first introduced me to Ania Catherine in 2010 at Chapman University. "Enigma of Being Awake" was taken from the title of a Zen Buddhism class Dr. Peters still teaches today.
"...as I am born, I simultaneously give birth to the world I experience; I live out my life along with that world, and at my death the world I experience also dies... my personal life experience is at the same time the world of reality. Conversely, the world of reality constitutes my mind. In the daily course of things I encounter a world of phenomena, and it is through these encounters and my experience of them that I live out my life." - Kosho Uchiyama
In 2013, Ania and I collaborated on an experimental short film "dearSAPPHO," which has screened all around the world. Our journey for the "Enigma of Being Awake" production started to pick up steam in 2014. I was thrilled to have a table reading of the script when Ania returned to the states along with Samira Mahboub.

Risks and challenges
Making a film is no walk in the park. Lack of $$$$ can make it difficult to actualize your dreams, but thank goodness for platforms like Kickstarter!
We have cast the perfect actors, found a very talented cinematographer, collected a stellar art department, brought on an experienced editor, and have freakin awesome fashionistas styling our ladies.
Seeking out financial backers is our biggest challenge, but with your help "Enigma of Being Awake" will be completed!
The filmmakers are aiming to be ready for the 2016 round of film festivals. If fully funded, production should be wrapped by July 2015.
We have the right people in place to execute the rest of the film and finding financial backers to support our cause is our mission. We have a strong team and know that this story can make a change in bringing about visibility for the LGBT community as well as social awareness on the status of Arab-Americans through an artist's point of view.
Thank you so much for your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
