A feature length documentary about a youth-led, bike-powered cross-country road trip to build momentum for co-operative living

The youth gets together his materials to build a bridge to the moon, or, perchance, a palace or temple on the earth, and, at length, the middle-aged man concludes to build a woodshed with them” – Henry David Thoreau

What is To The Moon?

To the Moon is a feature length documentary film that will follow a group of self-starting college students from Amherst, Massachusetts named Co-Cycle as they lead a cycling tour across the country to visit local co-operative businesses and host community events. The film is being produced by a small group of film and design students from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.

The summer journey will start with a kick-off event hosted by the United States Federation of Worker Co-operatives in San Francisco on June 1st and proceed across the northern U.S., concluding in Amherst, Massachusetts at the start of September. In each major city along the route, Co-Cycle will collaborate with various co-op businesses, staging workshops and events to educate the local community about socially-conscious ways of living.

At these pitstops, new bikers will join or leave the cycling group, promising a constant presence of dynamism and happenstance for our cameras to capture. Our film crew will trail the bikers along the entire journey, putting together a story with the twelve main bikers of Co-Cycle as the major pieces of the puzzle, while the new faces we collect as we go will guide the rest of the way.

What is a co-op?

A cooperative is an organization owned and controlled equally by the people who use its services or by the people who work there. It is a workplace system abiding by absolute democracy, operating on the principle that ownership and leadership should be comprise of each member's cooperative contribution rather than their capacity to invest financial capital for profit. Co-ops that dates far back into early civilization, and its development is on the rise in the modern world, with numerous American organizations and enterprises continuing to showcase the system's capacity for positive ecological and social impact.

Why does it matter?

The past ten years have set the scene for change: The first African American President was elected in the US, Gay marriage has been legalized in six states, democracies are forming as countries around the world are liberating; All of these events have been fundamentally youth-driven. In light of recent events, specifically movements like Occupy Wall Street and the Arab Spring Uprising, we are presenting a different mode in which our generation is taking matters into our own hands in search of a brighter, more sustainable future. Instead of onscreen pedagogy lamenting problems, these young voices will present a solution through actions.

The narrative we will tell through the dreams and willpower of a small group of young people will mirror our own journey as a group of budding filmmakers set out with a goal that affects so much more than ourselves. Through the specific lens of the co-operative movement, we will watch these able representatives of our generation experience this country in new and powerful ways in their determined attempt to not only mobilize and educate the communities they encounter, but themselves as well.

What will my donation be used for?

Not only are we scrambling to put together a film we are wholeheartedly invested in, we are also trying to plan a three month cross country road trip! There is a plethora of things needed to make this documentary happen. All of your contribution will go to acquiring the necessities to ensure that the film we are envisioning will become a reality, and that we don't get attacked by bears. The specifics of what we are fundraising for are as follows:

3 one-way tickets from NYC to San Francisco
Gas fare
Principle camera
GoPro cameras
Sound equipment
DIT equipment
Camping equipment
Food supply

We couldn't do this without you!

Producing this documentary has been a humbling and incredibly eye-opening experience. It is a huge undertaking, but we know we don't have to tackle it alone. The collaborative spirit of the documentary would not be complete if not for kind contributors such as yourselves!
