Bringing depth to traditional wet plate collodion ambrotypes by exposing directly into large format hand blown glass forms

The Story

This project aims to create something entirely new and non-traditional by bringing depth to photography to create an experience for the viewer that is more tangible in a three-dimensional way.

I have been blowing glass for over three years, and photography for around seven. Immediately after I discovered glass and become hooked I knew that I wanted to work with the two mediums together in conjunction with one another. I was determined to find a way. Upon discovering the Wet Plate Collodion Process I realized the potential this approach could have and the idea for this project began to take form.

When discussing this project and showing my progress to others, I have found that they are captivated by this way of integrating the two mediums.  Their interest excites and encourages me to continue to pursue my goal for this body of work.  I am incredibly grateful for all the support I have had so far, but I am personally not content until I have worked more with the materials and produced final, complete pieces.

So here I am, in search of help that will allow me to continue this exciting new way of working. I am full of ambition and so eager to see everything come together for my final thesis show at the Cleveland Institute of Art in May, 2014.  Upon graduating, I believe that the experience I will have gained throughout the duration of this project will be invaluable in helping me launch my career as a professional artist.

More funding?

If my project is successful and I raise up to $2,000 this would allow me to be able to complete this project!  However, if I am able to raise more than $2,000 this would be extremely beneficial in a multitude of ways.  It would give me more opportunities to be able to travel with my camera and glass to make exposures in other areas and to have a variety of landscapes to photograph. It would also allow me to make more glass forms by being able to pay an assistant and to work with more colors.  Funding would also go towards replenishing my chemicals for the photographic process, and to upkeep my camera and darkroom.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

I am thrilled to have this campaign as a means of support directly from the people who are interested in this project.
Please know that if there are any complications that would create delays, you will be notified as soon as possible. I am committed to my supporters and I will give honest updates if there are complications. It gives me great pleasure to be able to recognize my appreciation for the people who support me, and I am dedicated to giving back something that has real value to you. With that said, I will do everything in my power to send the rewards on time.

Working towards this final thesis show is the most fulfilling thing I do everyday. I expect there to be a huge improvement with the next exposures knowing exactly what I want and how to achieve this. I have confidence with the responsibility I have gained that if any issues were to arise with my chemicals, camera or darkroom, I would be able to resolve them. I have been through the trial and error phase for this project, so there are not too many risks at the stage I am currently at. The process requires patience and time, but I do not foresee any problems that will prevent this work to be completed.
