Meet Emily

My love for fashion began when I was eight years old. I made a suit for my younger brother using only copy paper and staples--something I'm sure he thoroughly enjoyed! I graduated from Baylor University in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in Apparel Design. Since I graduated from college, not a day has gone by that I haven't sketched, researched, created patterns, or sewn something. Many of my designs are inspired by my own wardrobe needs, and anything I design I wear in my own life. I find it nearly impossible to find quality, classic clothing in stores--much less clothing that is American made! I love classic silhouettes, but I incorporate modern design sensibilities and use exceptional fabrics. Good design is nothing with an inexpensive fabric that will fall apart after one wear. I am dedicated to bringing you the absolute best in classic, feminine design using the most sumptuous fabrics and impeccable construction.

Why Kickstarter?

Great question! The simple answer is that I have a big project in the works, and I need a little boost to make it happen. Funds raised through this project will go towards fabric and trim, advertising, website and graphic design, photography, promotional materials, pattern grading, and sample production. A kick-start, if you will!

I greatly appreciate any and all pledges. Thank you so much!

The Project

The concept for the fall collection is 1940s-inspired. I spent a significant amount of time in college researching and studying WWII-era fashion, which has turned into a lifelong love of mine. I'm probably most intrigued by the pursuit of beauty and the triumph of the human spirit contrasting with the haunting ruins of war. Despite challenges of rationing, shortages, and occupations, fashion managed to express ideals of beauty, femininity and luxury. How people chose to dress was a creative expression of their own circumstances. The fall collection will incorporate some of the practical design details seen in garments from that time, such as hooded capes with large pockets, trousers for women, and wool coats, but also reflect a modern woman's needs. Expect a fresh color palette of pale greys, saturated navy and a touch of palest pink--with a shot of crimson. Fabrics will be seasonally appropriate, and designs will feel luxurious, romantic, and feminine. The collection will include separates, suits, coats, day dresses, and special occasion pieces. Below are some images from my inspiration boards for the fall collection.

Ask Me Anything

Below are a few questions that were asked of me by one of my favorite bloggers. I hope this section provides some insight into my design aesthetic, what makes me "go", and my vision for the future of the Emily Hallman brand!

What are a few of your favorite pieces from your previous collections?

It's so difficult to choose! As a designer I love everything, but some more than others and for different reasons. I adore the Millie dress from the fall 2011 collection. It's a classic design, but with special detailing and a beautiful floral fabric. This particular design was so popular that I will bring it back in every future collection, but refreshed and appropriate for the current season.

Another favorite was the Rosie skirt. I used a pumpkin colored French lace, and I loved the texture of the lace, and the color is just so . . . fabulous.

I love the Elaine dress because of its neckline and stitching. There are certain silhouettes and design details that I will always love--thankfully my customers love them too--and a bateau neck is one of them. I'm always thinking of interesting ways to change things up a bit, and this was a fun way to incorporate a little peek-a-boo opening while still remaining modest.

Where does the Hallman name come from?

Hallman is my paternal grandmother's maiden name, and for as long as I can remember I've known that I wanted to use it. I love the fact that it's a family name!

How would you describe the perfect 'Hallman' woman... what types of qualities does she possess? What would we all love about her?

First and foremost, the Hallman woman is . . . a woman. I design grown-up clothing for confident, chic women who enjoy ladylike clothes made with the finest materials. Here is what we love about the Hallman woman: her clothing is an accessory to her personality, not the definition of it. She dresses to feel good, and isn't impressed with passing fads or amateur design. She loves special details, exquisite tailoring and proper fit.  The Hallman woman is smart, charming, funny, and incredibly stylish.

Tell us more about the thought process behind the designs.

The design process is considerably longer than you might imagine--for me, it's about 5 months.  I approach each collection with ideas already in mind about specific looks I want to incorporate. I do an incredible amount of research and source my fabrics, sketch, re-sketch, edit, draft new ideas, and tweak the overall collection prior to drafting the patterns or sewing the samples. I then spend weeks drafting each pattern and test the design, fit and comfort before final design approval. What's your design and/or fashion philosophy?
I simply love creating beautiful clothing, and I sincerely hope to encourage women to disregard our society's current obsession with thinness and unrealistic celebrity beauty and embrace a healthy body. I don't care what "size" a person is, it's irrelevant to me. We all need great clothes, and my goal is to provide clothing that anyone can wear. The fact is, I adore pretty clothes and I like to feel pretty in my own everyday life. I want all woman to feel that way when they get dressed, and I am thrilled to be able to contribute to that.
