Spider & Fly is a story for the curious, passionate, and wandering. Unpolished and unflinching, this featurette-length film combines Dogme 95 ideals and low-fi aesthetics with stark poetic romanticism.
The film follows Johnny Boy, an impassioned poet and adolescent, through his own self-constructed daily routine in which he holds no obligations, no promises to anyone, yet which he is ultimately trapped by. He is finally offered an opportunity for transformation from an unexpected and perhaps unwelcome source.
I wrote the screenplay for Spider & Fly when I was a Film/Video student at the Art Institute of Chicago. I used my school assignment as an excuse to create something I really wanted to make. Initially the script was three pages long... One year and eight VHS tapes later, the finished film will be roughly forty-five minutes long.
Intention (AKA: Why Analogue?)
I believe in seeking honesty through art. Or art through honesty.
Spider & Fly was only ever meant to be shot on VHS. The warped, imperfect, and lo-fi properties of analogue mirror the nature of the film in a very specific way.
"Chaos is the score upon which reality is written." -- Henry Miller
All money will go towards completion of this film and will cover all production, post-production, and film festival submission costs. We have two more scenes to shoot which entails supplying food, water, and coffee for the cast and crew (coffee is crucial), transportation to and from locations, makeup, and equipment costs. We also have a phenomenal co-editor we are taking on, and will be compensating the cast and crew for their excellent work.
In addition to Spider & Fly's amazing and open-minded crew (you guys are awesome), there are other players worth mentioning.
Super talented Santa Fe-based duo, Evarusnik is one such force. Spider & Fly will be featuring special tracks from Andrew & Miranda. Backers can look forward to secret downloads and sneak peeks!
Additionally, gifted Irish musician, Robert Doherty will be composing original music for the film. Stay tuned for updates, Backers!
Final Words (AKA: Why Should You Back Us?)
Filmmaking is a very profound art form and is essentially collaborative. In film, like in life, you need a strong family to help and support you. Through sharing experiences, both rough and graceful, you encounter people -- individuals who you relate to and work well with -- that will impact your life forever. One donation, one shared link, or Tweet, or 'like', or re-blog can mean the world for a project like ours. In order for us to succeed, we need a strong family backing us -- We need you!
Spider & Fly has been a year in the making. It's been a wild and eye-opening journey and we are grateful for anything you can give. Back us and help us finish this project!
Much Love, xx Emily
Risks and challenges
One of the trickiest aspects of this project lies in the unpredictable nature of VHS & the approach we have taken to shooting. Because everything is shot on-location (mostly exterior) sometimes things get out of our control. When shooting last year, there were a couple days we had to end the work day early due to bad weather conditions, missing permits, etc.
We are also making this film on a very low budget, and sometimes things take a longer amount of time to accomplish (e.g. manually transferring VHS to miniDV to digital in realtime transfers).
However, regardless of any obstacles, we are a team of very dedicated and hardworking artists who are very committed to the completion of Spider & Fly. It has been over a year now -- it is time to finish this film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
