Hello dear ones,

I am embarking on the exciting journey of directing my first feature film, QUEEN ANNE'S LACE. I have made several shorts over the years and have learned so, so much during this process, and I am ready to put all of that knowledge and creativity into this film.

ABOUT QUEEN ANNE'S LACE

QUEEN ANNE’S LACE is a micro-budget doc-fiction hybrid feature film in the neorealist tradition, which will be filmed in late August and early September in the mountains of North Carolina. The texture of the wildflower-strewn countryside, the deep South, and colorful local residents and weekenders will all be a part of this film which is inspired by both observational documentaries and John Cassavettes' work.

STORY

Using a combination of New York actors and local non-actors, the dialogue will be improvised, and real old time / bluegrass musicians will be woven into the story of a poet who feels silenced in her art by her obligations as a wife and mother and who runs to her aunt's country house to regain her freedom. Trading the fetters of her cluttered NY apartment for a consequence-free season of kayaking and flirtation seems to salve all Jane's wounds, but when she falls for a local female kayak instructor, things get complicated.

THEMES

Through Jane’s journey, the film explores the virtue of striving to be fully present, a balancing act that ideally integrates the freedom and wonder we feel as children with the responsibilities we have as adults. Jane has become an automaton in her life and she must find a way to shed this identity and be engaged as a woman, creator and mother.

ABOUT ME

I have made several short films, including MUCK (World Premiere, Sarasota Film Festival; BAMcinemaFest; runner-up, Hammer to Nail Winter 2015 Short Film Award), CROSSING THE RIVER (Best Short Award, NUHO Online Film Festival; Best Ensemble Cast Award, NYC Downtown Short Film Festival), OTHER PEOPLE’S HOUSES and MY ELENA. It is my goal to continually put people and situations in my films that aren’t often in the limelight, and to seek to understand the misunderstood. I feel that the struggles and joys people go through in everyday life mean everything, and am compelled to share these stories onscreen.

We have an incredible team on board to help to tell this story.

Lovely family and friends in the community where we are shooting are kindly opening their homes and sharing their lives for this film. We are truly grateful to be able to include a bit of their amazing spirits on celluloid.

We are also thrilled to have the legendary producer Gill Holland of the Group Entertainment on board as Executive Producer.

REWARDS

Rewards include downloads of the film, tickets to screenings, consultations on your upcoming short films, pressed wildflowers from the North Carolina mountains, and original artwork in the form of prints by my amazing professional artist mother, Polly Burns. Simultaneous to me creating this project, she has been working on her own line of paintings focusing on Queen Anne's Lace flowers. They are transcendent and beautiful and will be available as prints at certain reward levels.

YOUR CONTRIBUTION

Thank you for considering contributing to QUEEN ANNE’S LACE. Our intent is to bring the inner life of an artist, wife and mother to the screen in the most truthful and specific way possible. Marriage, motherhood and love, with all its joys and complications, will be captured in this film in an attempt to share the universal human experience within this specific story.

Your contribution will literally go towards getting this film made. More specifically the funds will be used for production expenses including:

EQUIPMENT: camera equipment, sound equipment, and lights

CREW: the ones who get ‘er done

TRAVEL: airfare, gas, and a passenger van

FOOD AND BEVERAGES: perhaps the most important thing on set

OTHER PRODUCTION EXPENSES: insurance, hard drives, props and more

No amount is too small. We also appreciate your posts, tweets and emails to help spread the word!

Thank you once again for your immeasurable support as I embark on this once-in-a-lifetime journey of making my first feature!

Love,

Emilie

Risks and challenges

The risks and challenges of making a micro-budget independent feature film are varied and many. We are depending on an intimate crew and the kindness of friends and family to make this film. It is a delicate balance that must be preserved. Some of the many things that could go wrong include: equipment malfunctioning, crew becoming unavailable, or rain happening on a shoot day when we need sun. Thankfully, I have experienced all of these things and more on all the shorts I’ve made and I’ve learned that despite the challenges, when there’s a will there’s a way when making a film, especially when one is lucky enough to be surrounded by supportive collaborators, which I am.

This crowdfunding appeal is for production funds only. The next challenge will be raising money for post-production, but I believe we will do so, especially with the footage we capture in the mountains, which I have every confidence will be compelling and beautiful.

Kickstarter is an all or nothing platform. If we don’t raise our goal, we receive no funds. Many thanks for your contributions. Again, no amount is too small and we appreciate your support for QUEEN ANNE’S LACE in whatever form it takes.
