I am a self-taught watchmaker and the founder of Emerson and Michael. We are a small New York-based watch startup that designs and produces our own watches.
More recently Emerson and Michael partnered with various different manufacturers to enable us to produce watches in greater quantity while maintaining our standard of quality.
For our first collection we wanted to make something beautiful that represents quality and reliability. We put a lot of time and love into this collection. We are starting with the ETA Swiss automatic and Miyota automatic movements. These are excellent movements and just about every major luxury watch brand has used them and continues to use them.
With this particular watch we wanted to make something that feels like the beautiful place where all of our watches originate. That's why we call this, the watch that feels like New York.
WE WERE GUIDED BY FOUR DESIGN PRINCIPLES
- CLASSIC DESIGN
- SUPERLATIVE QUALITY
- SLEEK COMFORT
- DIVERSE OPTIONS
We wanted our first limited edition collection to capture the diversity of New York. The collection features nine different watches.
The case comes in four options, 316L stainless steel, gold tone, PVD stainless steel and bronze. The dial comes in eight varieties. There are also six strap options including natural leather and high quality nylon.

No matter where you live or work in the world, whether you're having brunch in New York's Hudson Valley or in a business meeting in Switzerland, you will find a version that fits your lifestyle.
At first glance you might assume that the watch is simple, however you will quickly note the sophistication and charm.
As we looked through old photographs of iconic New Yorkers we noticed that the trench watch was an ever present timepiece. Early 20th century trench watches were made from robust pocket watches. Taking things a step further our case was designed to resemble the open face of a pocket watch. This feature gives the case a more sculptural dimension. The vintage curved dial perfectly punctuates the design making for a wrist presence that is substantial and classic.
The lovely curved dial has a life of its own. The indications on the ombré dial dance in the light as you move your wrist, with a metallic translucence that must be seen to truly appreciate. Each ombré dial is made up of not one but two colors.
At 40mm the case size hits the sweet spot for both men and women.
This watch doesn't just have a handsome face. The robust automatic heartbeat insures it's long-lasting accuracy.
The Swiss ETA 2824 movement has long been known for its accuracy. And can be found in luxury watches 20 times the price of ours.
The Miyota 821A is no slouch either, also known for its accuracy, and found in luxury watches up to 15 times the price of ours.
The convenience of the automatic movement means you won't have to worry about replacing a battery or winding it. It winds itself as you naturally move throughout the day. With up to 42 hours of power reserve, it will even keep accurate time on your dresser at night while you rest.
The sapphire crystal ensures the highest level of scratch resistance and visibility. It features a beautiful curve which complements the curvature of the dial.

THE PROTOTYPE PROCESS
The prototype was designed and built from the ground up, right here in New York. We didn't just sketch a design and send it to a manufacturer. This gave us invaluable insight into every aspect of what goes into manufacturing this watch.

WE ARE READY TO LAUNCH AND WE NEED YOUR HELP
For our production model we are now working closely with manufacturers. Our manufacturers have years of experience in the business of producing watches and use state of the art manufacturing techniques such as CNC milling and laser cutting to ensure the highest quality finished product.
With your backing you will take part in the startup of an American made watch company and receive a beautiful timepiece to commemorate your support. Even if we do not reach our funding goal you will still receive your watch.
RISK AND CHALLENGES
As with any undertaking there are always risks and challenges. Fortunately we are walking a road well tread. I mentioned previously I have been producing watches for almost 2 decades so I understand the challenges that come with this process.
Emerson and Michael’s goal from the start has always been to remove the risk to the customer. This is why we chose to use crowdfunding to start with, since it is such a safe environment where accountability ensures a high-quality product.
Our manufacturers are some of the best in the business, and we have given ourselves plenty of time for quality control to make sure that each watch meets our specifications.
OUR LONG TERM MISSION
As previously mentioned our long-term goal is to put our own proprietary movement into production.
I got my start designing and making diamond engagement rings, a trade I have been in for the past 20 years. My love for detail eventually led me to watchmaking. I made my first watch, which featured a Swiss movement, in 1999 and it still runs. Since then I have produced quite a few watches with mechanical and automatic movements inside. Two years ago I embarked on the challenge of developing my own automatic movement. So far it is 75% complete and I aim to have it done by mid to late 2018. This will be part of our own collection of mechanical an automatic movements including what we call the worlds most unique tourbillion.
The prototype for the automatic movement is being entirely made in the United States using many different manufacturers. For the production model we are exploring the option of continuing to use mostly stateside manufactures or even manufacturing it ourselves. We are also open to the option of working along with overseas manufacturers.
The process has been quite expensive and we’ve met with many challenges along the way, however we are confident that we can pull this off especially with the help of crowdfunding.
We are very proud to be launching what will be the first in a series of collections of watches conceived right here in New York.
We thank you again for considering our project and look forward to working with you in the future.

Risks and challenges
Prior to launch we spent two year perfecting our process exclusively for Kickstarter. This entailed communicating with manufactures both in the United States and overseas. We have since successfully produced several prototype watches to ensure our system is seamless.
We recognize that unforeseen occurrences are a natural part of life, and there may be snags along the way. In preparation for this we are committed to total transparency and communication with our backers. If there are any changes with the production schedule we will let you know immediately.
We are committed to our backers and we want to hear from you. If there are any questions or suggestions to improve your experience or improve our product, we welcome your feedback.
