About this project

THE PROJECT

A preliminary sketch of the war memorial sculpture depicting soldiers raising a white flag of surrender.
A preliminary sketch of the war memorial sculpture depicting soldiers raising a white flag of surrender.

In 2014, a grassroots cry for non-violence, among soldiers, police and civilians, would resonate worldwide. From Russia’s emerging imperialism, to a third US military confrontation on Iraqi soil, to the citizens of Hong Kong pleading for democracy, to the militarized police in Ferguson, the time is particularly ripe for an anti-militarist message.

Guo Jian + Marcus Eriksen will create a multi-dimensional piece which includes a war memorial statue and documentary film footage about the memorial’s creation. 35-40 actors of various cultural backgrounds will be recruited to shoot a movie, documenting the creation of a war memorial. The actors will wear military uniforms representing several military cultures, anachronistic and often on historically opposing sides. Akin to traditional war memorials such as Iwo Jima, this group of military men and women would be planting a flag together – but here it is a white flag of surrender.

A participatory photo series called #SURRENDER Selfies will also be part of the exhibition. The artists are encouraging supporters worldwide, from opposing factions, to submit photos with their hands up. Whether or not you can donate, please post a #SURRENDER Selfie. Learn More.

THE ARTISTS

Guo Jian is a Chinese artist who has exhibited worldwide, and has been featured in the NY Times and Wall Street Journal. He is a third generation military veteran, having served in China’s People’s Liberation Army during the Sino-Vietnamese war.Guo’s work is heavily influenced by the Chinese Cultural Revolution of 1966–76, the late 1970s, early 1980s war with Vietnam, and the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989 – in which he participated as a protestor. After the events of 1989, Guo Jian became a pioneer of the Chinese avant-garde art scene, and a founding member of the famous Yuanmingyuan Artist Village.

Guo Jian was recently exiled from China, after he completed a morbid diorama of Tiananmen Square, which he covered in ground meat and left to rot. (Financial Times 1 2 3CNN). After worldwide coverage of his arrest and detainment, Guo was deported and separated from his family, ending up in Sydney. The collaboration with Emerging Collective will be his first project since being exiled.

Marcus Eriksen is a US Marine Corp veteran whose work centers on the realities of war, disillusionment with militarism, and environmental activism. He has won awards for his service in Kuwait City during the Gulf War, and afterwards became interested in showing the harsh realities of wartime, and how it changed him and his peers. He is an environmental activist with notable projects that have garnered media attention. Now based in LA, Marcus earned his PhD in Science Education and has the skills to work with metal, wood, paint, and even animal flesh. Through art-as-activism, he has brought attention to the plight of Hurricane Katrina victims, plastic in the world’s oceans, the material refuse and rubble that results from armed conflict, the shame of surviving conflict, and the sadness of fallen soldiers.

WHO IS EMERGING COLLECTIVE?

Emerging Collective is a non-profit art initiative, creating dialogue between the First World and the Emerging Markets through the prism of art. The program involves immersive art exhibitions, mentorship of emerging artists by globally recognized artists, and a digital content platform cataloguing these new endeavors. With an emphasis on activist and avant-garde art, Emerging Collective aims to catapult the most promising creatives to the forefront of the global art scene, and serve as a cultural change-agent for the next generation.

HOW IT WORKS

The program consists of a dual artist-in-residency program and a collaborative exhibition – one globally recognized artist and one top emerging talent. One of these artists will come from the first world, and the other will come from the emerging markets. The mentorship relationship will be solidified in their collaboration.

First, they will create a piece in the disused space chosen. The creative process will be live streamed, and the work will be on auction from the moment the work begins, ending when the work is complete. They will also collaborate on an immersive concept and build it together.  The exhibition will be centered around these two artworks.

During the exhibition, Emerging Collective will curate intimate discussions with the artists, as well as other culturally relevant programming in the exhibition space.  The mentorship relationship, and the immersive work that is produced from it, will be the result of north-south dialogue. This will be a transcendent artwork that neither artist could have imagined alone, and will be Emerging Collective’s biggest contribution to humanity – to literally push culture forward.

Risks and challenges

The space being used is a disused space - 6000 sq ft retail floor and court yard. It is quite raw and will be amazing for an art exhibition, as it is in the heart of Soho. The installation will be site specific, so that presents challenges in terms of hanging projectors, putting mirrors on the ceiling, bathrooms for visitors, and place for

Another big challenge is getting the support of the establishment art community for a controversial project - neither galleries nor museums are well equipped to deal with activist art on this level. That is the gap that Emerging Collective attempts to fill.
