How to play?
First and foremost, check out the campaign video. It will show you how the game is played. However, read on for a text version, as well to check out some different cards that weren't in the Kickstarter Video.
There will be 4 card types- Classes, Events, Items and the Boss. The game will begin by having the Event and Items decks in the middle of the table.
The boss card is put at the bottom of the shuffled events deck. Once players reach the bottom, they will join forces to fight the fearsome boss. We are looking forward to creating many different quest locations and bosses in the future for players to triumph (or lose) against.
The boss will have a health value (for the Cyclops, it is 6). Each player, starting with who drew the boss card, will take turns rolling the dice against him.
For the Cyclops, if a player rolls 4-6, they will strike the cyclops, and reduce it's health by 1. If they roll 1-3, they will miss, and be required to take 3 drinks (and other players 1).
Once it's health has reached 0, it will mark the end of the quest, and players will tally up their completed event cards to determine the victor.
Before the players can begin their quest, they must select a class card at random. Each class will have a strength, fortitude, intellect and charm value, and also a special ability.
The Gladiator, for example, has a strength of 3, Fortitude of 2, Intellect of 1, and charm of 2. These attributes will be used in event cards, giving the gladiator both advantages and disadvantages over different encounters.
The Gladiator's special ability increases the victory and defeat values of an event by 1. He will earn an additional gold piece if he beats an event, however be required to take an extra drink if he loses.
Players will determine turn order by rolling the dice. In event of a tie, affected players will resolve it by rerolling.
Players will then take turns drawing an event card from the deck. They can additionally use items against other players during this phase.
Event cards will feature different monsters, challenges or obstacles. Each will have a 'Win' prize, and a 'Lose' penalty. The Fire Beetle, for example, has a prize of 3 gold coins, and a penalty of 5 mouthfuls of their drink.
Each event will have two different options to beat it. For the Fire Beetle, there is a strength option and an intellect option. Players will be required to roll the dice for their selection and add their corresponding attribute to their dice roll. For example, the Gladiator with a strength of 3, would need to roll a 4 to slay the verminous creature.
Difficult skill checks such as this may give an additional prize if beaten. The chest icon next to the Fire Beetle's strength check means the player gets to draw an item card if they succeed that check.
There will be many different events for the players to discover and compete against, some more difficult than others. Occasionally the victory prize and defeat requirement may be something other than gold coins or mouthfuls of their drink.
Items offer players tools to make the game more interesting in their favour, quite often getting other players more intoxicated in the process.
Once everybody has drawn from the event deck, an auction will take place. One item per every 3 players will be drawn, and players will bid on the items with the gold they have won from events. Any disputes will be settled by dice roll.
My vision of DrinkAge is to create many different quest locations, each cleverly designed and a delight to play. Some future expansions may include The Moonshine Forest, The Graveyard of Spirits, and The Wastedlands!
