A cult leader struggles to cling to his faith and keep his community together, after his end-of-days prophecy does not come to pass.
What is the film about?
It's 2012, and the world is coming to an end—at least according to the Mayan calendar. People everywhere are predicting the future and what it will look like, and doomsayers have loud voices. But why all the paranoia?
As It Is In Heaven is a micro-budget feature film about a cult leader who struggles to cling to his faith and keep his community together after his end-of-days prophecy does not come to pass.
What sets our film apart is not only the subject matter, but the portrayal of the cult and its leader. We want to go deeper into the leader's psyche as things begin to unravel, giving another perspective to a typically unsympathetic character. This story will follow someone who is not only deluded, but broken.
Will it be worth watching?
This project has been steadily gaining momentum since its inception nearly half a year ago, with the script penned by the husband and wife team, Joshua and Ginny Lee Overbay. Joshua, who has an MFA in Film, is currently a professor at Asbury University and connected with the film industries in Kentucky and Virginia. He is also the director of As It Is In Heaven.
He has directed fourteen films and won twenty-three awards, including being a Student Academy Award Finalist. He is currently wrapping post-production on the Southern Gothic film, My Brother, My Brother.
Not only is the director talented, but many professionals, from the cinematographer to the actors, have already signed up to work on a volunteer basis. We will be shooting with the highest quality equipment, provided for free through Asbury University, and the cast and crew are near finalization.
All the elements are present for an amazing film: A great story. A dedicated and talented crew. A passionate director. A fabulous cast.
What's this about Students?
Because our director is also a professor, he plans to integrate film students into the production. These students will have the opportunity to be a part of a real independent feature film set. Instead of merely class time, they will get the chance to build their resume and gain real-world experience, giving a head start to many students who want to go into independent filmmaking.
How can I help?
We need funding to make this project happen. Everyone, including the producers and the director, is working on the film for free because they believe in this project. However, we need to be able to provide food and housing for many of our volunteers while they give of their time.
Most films of this size and caliber require much higher budgets, but due in part to connections made, and the generosity of others, we will be able to do it for a fraction of the cost—however, we still need $10,000.
This seems like a lot, but the beauty of Kickstarter is that everyone needs only to give a small amount. If we don't reach our goal, we won’t receive any of the pledged money, and the film doesn't get made. We believe there are enough people passionate about filmmaking, as well as invested in hands-on education, that we can fund this film.
If we raise more than our amount, all of that money goes directly into the project, ensuring its success even further. Every dollar makes a difference.
Thank you so much.
