The game starts with only the Town Hall Tile in the Village Grid. A selection of four randomly drawn Village Tiles are laid out on the Planning Board, along with two Palace Tiles.
Each player starts with a randomly drawn Residence Tile and some starting Coins or Resources, depending on which side of the player board they all decide to use. The starting resources are unique to each hero.
At the start of the game, the players decide whether to use the Quarry Dice or the Quarry Tokens. The Quarry Dice make for a quicker game, while the Quarry Tokens offer more strategic opportunities. At the beginning of each round, the Quarry Offers are created (one per player) by either rolling the Quarry Dice or drawing from the pile of face down Quarry Tokens.
On their turn, each player can:
1. Choose one of the available Quarry Offers. The player collects any Resources or perform any actions that are determined by the Quarry Offer.
2. Build one of the Village Tiles on the Planning Board or build their Residence Tile. They must have the necessary resources to build that structure.
Before a player can build anything, they have to collect some Resources via The Quarry. They choose a Quarry Offer on their turn and the Resources are placed in the Construction Yard section of their player board.
Some Quarry Offers provide a Quarry Action instead of a Resource. These actions include contributing to the Palace or breaking down one of their Resources into a smaller piece.
Building a Tile
On their turn, players can build one of the available Village Tiles on the Planning Board or their Residence Tile.
Each structure has to be built as shown on the blueprint side of its tile. There are many ways to build each structure.
After a player completes a structure tile, any Resources used during its construction including any remaining Resources in the player's Construction Yard are returned to the Quarry.
Players are awarded Victory Points depending on the complexity of the structure tile they completed. Different structures provide additional bonuses to the player as well.
Adding to the Village Grid
When a player successfully completes a Tile, they get to flip it over and add it to the Village Grid. They can place the tile anywhere, so long as it doesn't exceed the maximum size of the grid, and it is placed directly beside an existing tile.
On the edge of each tile is a connector icon. Each colour of connector represents a different reward. Most connectors earn the player a Coin, while some may give an Obsidian Resource or a Victory Point.
By lining up two connectors of the same colour, the player can earn double the rewards. Alternatively, by lining up two different connectors, the player gets to choose which reward they get for that connection. While doubling your rewards sounds ideal, there are many strategic reasons for choosing to receive just one of a particular reward.
Players only earn rewards for connectors at the time of placing the Tile. They don't get anything from connectors if a player places a tile next to theirs.
Each Coin has a unique face-up action that can be used during the player's turn simply by spending that Coin. There are also a number of face-down actions that players can use to their advantage.
Some of these actions include contributing to the Palace, exchanging Coins, and buying Resources.
Clever timing when Spending a Coin or a combination of Coins can easily turn the tide of a game.
Building the Palace
A Palace is a special kind of tile that is built by all players during the course of a game.
Players are awarded a number of Victory Points or Obsidian Resources depending on how much of the Palace they build.
The player that places the last cube in the Palace earns some extra Victory Points and gets to place the Palace Tile in the Village Grid.
The game is over when the Village Grid reaches its maximum size (determined by the number of players).
Players who decided to hold on to some of their coins by the end of the game have the potential to earn some Victory Points for having the most of a particular type of Coin.
The player with the most Victory Points is deemed the winner!

You will be charged for shipping after the Kickstarter campaign ends based on the actual costs incurred to ship. We will collect these funds via our Elzra Pledge Manager.
We will ship your rewards to international fulfillment centers. Depending on where in the world you are, we will ship your reward to you from the following fulfillment centers. We use tracked shipping services (ground, air or surface) exclusively.
Elzra HQ - Canada, USA, Mexico, South Africa, and South America. Elzra operates their own warehouse and fulfills their own Kickstarter campaigns.
Games Quest - UK, European Union, Norway, Switzerland, and Israel. Note: games will be shipped from inside of the EU in the event of Brexit.
VFI - China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, and Middle East.
The following is a list of rough estimates for shipping a single pledge consisting of Catacombs Cubes and the Monuments expansion which weighs an estimated 9 lbs / 4 kg (all those punch boards and wood components are heavy). These are just estimates, and these costs may rise based on weight increases from unlocked stretch goals.
Due to the complexity of shipping to some regions, we cannot ship to the following countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and Syria. In addition, we cannot ship to international PO boxes.
Please know that the Pledge Manager stage of this campaign will have a deadline (announced after the campaign in a Project Update). If you fail to confirm your pledges after this deadline, your rewards will be shipped to you from Elzra HQ in Canada. As such, shipping costs may be considerably higher for those outside of Canada and the US. We also won't be responsible for any import or customs related duties.
Risks and challenges
This is our (Elzra's) fifth Kickstarter project as we are re-launching this campaign after cancelling the first campaign for Catacombs Cubes. We learned from that experience and listened to feedback from the backers of that campaign.
Our first campaign was for the first printing of Catacombs Third Edition (2014).
Our second campaign was for Catacombs & Castles (2016).
Our third campaign was for Catacombs Conquest (2017).
Our fourth campaign was for Catacombs 3E (with playmats) (2018).
For this "re-launch" campaign for Catacombs Cubes, we will continue to use our own, custom built, Elzra Pledge Manager to manage customer orders and to mitigate miscommunication related to shipping address changes.
We are fully aware of potential delays that may happen with products that are produced overseas: printer production schedules, major holidays (especially Chinese New Year), shipping, and customs delays. We will work diligently to minimize these types of disruptions and promise to communicate transparently with our backers if they occur.
We have estimated delivery for December 2019. Based on all of the initial production work we have completed with the factory, we believe this is achievable. All of the development for the core Catacombs Cubes game and the Monuments expansion have been completed. We have prepared as much as possible for a successful project. The core artwork assets have already been approved by the printer.
Due to the global logistics involved in shipping, some regions may receive their rewards sooner than others.
If the product cannot be produced and/or delivered due to some unforeseen circumstance, we will refund pledges.
Refunds may be given within 30 days of the campaign ending, including fees. After this time, refunds may be given minus the Kickstarter and payment processing fees due to us not being able to claim them back after 30 days.
We are unable to issue refunds once we have confirmed quantities and/or started mass production and/or if we have begun the fulfillment stage of the project.
If you do not confirm your shipping and pledge details within ten weeks of our notification email, we will consider your pledge abandoned.
By pledging on this Kickstarter campaign, you agree that our responsibility to you is for shipping your reward as confirmed in our Elzra Pledge Manager.
You are responsible for import taxes, sales taxes or other fees that may be payable to relevant tax authorities in your state and/or country.
You accept that you are fully liable for incorrect shipping details. If we are unable to deliver your package due to an incorrect shipping address, then you will be responsible for the cost of us re-shipping the package to you.
You accept that the final look and contents of your reward may be different from what is presented at the start of this campaign.
Please do not pledge for this Kickstarter campaign if you do not accept these terms.
We charge applicable GST/HST to all orders from within Canada. This is a legal requirement to ensure our company's compliance with the Canada Revenue Agency's (CRA) rules.
As we fulfill our campaigns from our warehouse in Canada, backers based in the US are not expected to have to pay any duty, tariffs or sales taxes, as the value of our products fall under the $800 USD de minimis value for imports into the country.
For backers based in Europe, we (Elzra) pay the VAT based on the value of the shipment upon import before fulfillment begins.
For backers in other countries, you are responsible for any locally imposed sales taxes, duties or other import related fees.
The above statements related to sales taxes are subject to change if new national or state regulations are introduced before this campaign is fulfilled.
Thank you for your support and understanding regarding these matters.
