About

Hi everybody,

Unfortunately I have to make the decision to cancel this project. It does hurt a lot! Many hours (read: years) of creating this game ended in quite a disappointment. But, I received many, many mails with a lot of positive reactions, tips and maybe some answers, related to the cancelation of this project.

I had very much fun creating this game. We received so many good reviews and feedback, it would be a shame to just trow this idea away. If you come across this page, please take your time to read it. Maybe you have some good ideas or even interested in working together. I think this game still has a lot of potential, but probably in some other way. You can always contact me at klappe@gmail.com

Finally I would thank everybody who took the time to help me during the last years. Backed me in some way or the other. Or shared my Facebook posts.

A special thanks to my friends and family who always believed in this project. To Steven Woudenberg for his beautiful illustrations and of course to my wife! She always backed me, when I was busy creating this game!

I will return!

Best to you all, Elwin Klappe

Michael from Unfiltered Gamer made this nice review of the game! Definitely check this one out!

Clash is a unique, strategic, wooden board and card game. The board game is designed, lasered and hand finished with the best care possible to make sure you experience the best game play.

All wooden games are numbered, which makes all games unique and therefore personal. You might even add your own text to make it even more personal. You can find more details about this below in the 'Your name on the game' section.

The card game plays almost the same as the wooden board game. The only difference is that you play it directly on a table instead of on a board.

Have fun reading everything. You might come across some Easter eggs ;)

Keep in mind, this project only runs for 14 days.

Best regards, Elwin

How to play the game?

Clash is played by 2 players, facing each other. The game board (20 x 40 cm or 7.90 x 15.75 inch) consists out of 7 roads, which are empty at the start. Each player has 21 units and 3 (+1 = stretch goal) special units at his or her disposal. Your goal is to reach the end of a road with your units and conquer a total of 3 roads.

Each player takes turns. Each turn consists out of 4 action points:

  • You can place any unit on any road, starting from your own side and build up an army (1 action point)
  • Retreat a leading unit and place it back in stock (2 action points)
  • Retreat a leading blocked unit and place it back in stock (3 action points)
  • Take any rear unit and place it to the front of the road you have taken it from (2 action points)

Eventually you will make contact with your enemy (and clash) and need to decide what to do... Attack, block or retreat.

After different clashes on different roads, someone will eventually conquer a road by hitting the end of that road. He or she has 1 point. 2 to go...

Beware of a few things: Try not to use all of your units in the beginning, because at the end you will need them even more! Bring your units to the front of the road, otherwise you'll run out of units at the end of the game. Use the strength of your special units, they make a big difference. And watch out for the spy! A more detailed description of the units can be found below in the 'Units' section.

The guys from Roll for Crit did a great Preview and a clear explaining of the rules. Check them out here:

Barry Doublet (from Board games everybody should) did a superb job explaining the rules of the wooden board game (starting after 2 minutes). He also reviewed the game. Check it out below. They also wrote a nice written review. You can read it here.

The preview and rules explained by Man vs Meeple can be seen here:

If you want to be part of our dream, but want to keep it modest, the €5/US$5 pledge level is yours. You receive the official printable PDF rule book, with your name in it. Because you'll get access to the pledge manager after the campaign you can always upgrade your choice very easily.

After the campaign ends I'll send everybody a link to a video, with step-by-step instructions on how to make your own wooden board game from rather simple materials which you can buy at your local workshop. This way everybody has the opportunity to play the game.

I want to create a game for every budget. The card game is the 'simplified' version of Clash of the Ardennes and can be played with cards only on a table. You will get the beautiful illustrated card game (24x Allies cards, 24x German cards and 7x Roads cards), the rule book with your name in it and all stretch goals relating to the card game, in a beautiful card board box. The dimensions of the game are 6.30 x 4.53 x 1.18 inch (16 x 11,5 x 3 cm).

Below you'll see the card game displayed. This is a play during the middle of a random game. Designs are not final.

You can upgrade the card game with a wooden box (made of multiplex poplar 3mm). Add €16/US$18 extra per game. The card game, including the card board box, will fit neatly into this wooden box. You can add a sentence of 80 characters on the wooden box. See details below in the 'Your name on the game' section.

If you want an extra card game, add €17/US$19 per extra game. If you're interested in more than 3 games, please contact me at: klappe@gmail.com

Is this game different from the wooden board game? Well, yes and no. Yes, it plays a bit more basic, but it is easy to take along and cheaper. No, the rules are the same, you only play with cards, in stead of pawns.

Shipping is not included. You can find price estimates and more information below in the 'Shipping' section.

This is the Do-It-Yourself version of the board game Clash of the Ardennes. I added this pledge level, so you can own a wooden copy of Clash of the Ardennes within a reasonable budget and you can get creative yourself. I'll laser the game, check it for imperfections, wrap it and send it out to you. It includes:

You can unleash your inner creativity and start sanding, gluing, painting, building and perfecting the game the way you like it. This pledge includes: poplar plywood (6mm) lasered board game (see wooden components above), a rule book and a how-to-glue-manual/video (spray paint, sanding paper and glue are not included) and all stretch goals related to the wooden board games.

The dimensions of the game are; 7.80 x 14.8 x 0.98 inch (19,8 x 37,5 x 2,5 cm).  If you want to add a free personal touch to the game, such as your name, you can find the details below in the 'Your name on the game' section.

You can read more about the creative process below, so you know what you can expect.  And yes, you probably will get some dirty hands 😉

If you follow the how-to-glue-manual/video closely, everybody will be able to create their own board game. Don't be afraid, you can do it! With these parts you can create the same board game as the Classic board game, only you build it with your own hands and muscles. You'll find more information about the creative process in 'The creative process' section below, so you know what you're up against.

Shipping is not included. You can find price estimates and more information below in the 'Shipping' section.

This pledge level includes the classic board game of Clash of the Ardennes. I’ll make sure the game is lasered, cleaned, sanded, painted, glued and packaged. Most of the work is done by my hand, to give it a personal touch. I'll add a unique game number in order of entry.

The game is made of poplar plywood and the dimensions of the game are; 7.80 x 14.8 x 0.98 inch (19,8 x 37,5 x 2,5 cm). It includes 24x Allied units, 24x German units (+2 if the 2-day stretch goal is reached), the rule book and all stretch goals related to the wooden board games.

If you want to add a free personal touch to the game, for example your name, you can find the details below in the 'Your name on the game' section.

This game is limited! There are only 500 pledges available. If you want more than 1 game, you can add €79/US$87 per extra game. There is a limit of 3 games per backer. If you want a card game added to this pledge, add €17/US$19 per game, so you can use this -for example- as a travel edition.

Shipping is not included. You can find price estimates and more information below in the 'Shipping' section.

The Collectors Edition is the finest edition of Clash of the Ardennes. It's made from the highest quality walnut and wood of your choice. You can add a personal touch by adding a sentence or name (max. 80 characters of your choice), which is included in this pledge.

The dimensions of the game are; 7.80 x 14.8 x 0.98 inch (19,8 x 37,5 x 2,5 cm). It includes 24x Allied units, 24x German units (+2 if the 2-day stretch goal is reached), the rule book and all stretch goals related to the wooden board games.

This game is limited! There are only 100 pledges available. If you want more than 1 game, you can add €139/US$153 per extra game. There is a limit of 2 games per backer. If you want a card game added to this pledge, add €17/US$19 per game, so you can use this -for example- as a travel edition.

Shipping is not included. You can find price estimates and more information below in the 'Shipping' section.

About the rule book

I designed the rule book with a few specific ideas in mind. First I wanted to create something new based on something old, of course linked to World War II. I came across a few old field manuals for the German tank crews: the Tigerfibel and the Panther-Fibel. It was a handy, quick-to-read, overview of a German tank. Apparently the German soldiers didn’t like reading so much, so they simplified the texts and added simple pictures to give it an amusing look. They even added scarcely dressed women and jokes, to get the attention of the crew. It got my attention too!

The illustrations were made by Obergrenadier Gessinger and Unteroffizier Wagner. A lot of after war pictures and drawings were based on their specific drawings. You could say the pictures were widely used as inspiration. I use them as inspiration too.

Therefore, I made contact with Steven Woudenberg. He made a few impressions and wow… Spot on! Beautifully designed and inspired by the old tank manuals, he made such a difference for this rule book and game. If you ever need a good, happy and spontaneous illustrator > Steven Woudenberg (Dutch website).

Secondly, I wanted to use environmentally friendly and sustainable paper, but keeping the slightly old, dusty look and feel. This is the result in comparison with the old Tiger-Fibel:

It could have fallen off a German Panther or Tiger tank yesterday...

You can download the latest rule book HERE. The rule book is not final yet and a slightly different rule book will be made for the card game of course (although the rules are the same). Just replace the pawns for cards.

Making your game unique

Each wooden game will be numbered twice. The first number is the number related to that specific product (DIY, Classic or Collectors Edition) and the second number is the product number in total (all games together).

So, for example: Backer #11 backs for Classic Edition. 5 backers before backed for a Classic edition and 5 backers before backed for a Collectors Edition (This means 10 in total). The following numbers will be lasered on your game: 006/00011 (You're backer #6 for the Classic Edition/You're backer #11 in total). This also means that your game is the 11th to be made, regardless of your version choice.

Note: After the campaign ends, when I need your response (name, address etc), you can add the sentence.

Our first goal is to reach our actual goal of €29.000/US$32.500. After this many stretch goals awaits. But first, let's reach our main funding goal!

Secondly I want to add another goal. If we reach our main goal within 2 days, I will add another special unit 'the Mortar' to all games.

The Mortar: The mortar (infantry) has the special ability to attack from a distance. When deployed, you can only attack the lowest ranking soldier, who is exactly 2 roads away from your mortar and in line with the position of the mortar. See more details about the mortar in the  rule book.

Because I want to be honest and very clear on everything, here is a detailed picture of the costs, as accurate as I can create it at this moment. It gives an acceptable idea of what happens to your hard earned money.

This does not include the countless pre-Kickstarter hours. Only materials, fees, salary, taxes and a small safety margin (increase of costs of materials for example).

When can I expect the game?

Below you'll find an estimate time schedule for each pledge level.

Updated waiting list (September the 10th):

Card game - Spring/Summer 2020. Depending on the number of games sold. At the end of the campaign I can give a better estimate.

DIY board game - From January 2020 each month 100 games. I can upscale productivity if this pledge level exceeds expectations.

Clash of the Ardennes - Classic board game - From January 2020 each month +/- 50 games, until I reach the maximum number of games in December. Which is set on 500 pledges, because I can only make a certain amount of games a year.

Clash of the Ardennes - Collectors Edition - From January 2020 each month +/- 10 games, until I reach the maximum number of games in December. Which is set on 100 pledges, because I can only make a certain amount of games a year.

Keep in mind that this list may change during and after the campaign. I may face some difficulties, which result in longer waiting time, but I may also discover handy tricks during manufacturing, which will result in a shorter waiting period of course.

If you are planning to move during the 'waiting' period, no problem, I'll ask for your latest address a month before sending out a batch (I'll keep your game safe until you've responded). Just don't change your mail address.

I will collect shipping costs after the campaign ends. Shipping costs vary widely based on where you live and how many games you ordered. Unfortunately, a one-size-fits-all price isn't manageable.

Besides this, most of the wooden board games ship separately, because when a batch of 100 games is ready, I will ship them out.

Below you will find an estimate of the shipping costs of the board and card game:

All prices are estimates and are based on 1 board and 1 card game. If you want more card games, you can roughly use the board game prices. If you backed for more board games, you can expect an extra €5,- per board game.

I don't use fulfillment centers for the wooden board games because I want the freedom to send out packages every month and don't send bulk. When the campaign ends, I will choose the most cost-effective solution for all games. Depending on the demand of the card games, I can use a fulfillment center.

If you are able to collect the game at my house in Dalfsen, The Netherlands, there will be no shipping costs or a refund.

Everybody receives an update when the games are sent out or you can pick it up.

My name is Elwin Klappe (36) and resident of Dalfsen (The Netherlands). Since the opening of Kickstarter in the Netherlands (29th of April 2014) Kickstarter is my way of sharing my passion with board games enthusiasts, by creating new, inventive game ideas and back good ideas from other creators. On 29th of April I started my first project BlockYou! and (thanks to you all!) ended it with success a month later.

Now, a few years later, I wanted to share my best idea so far (Clash of the Ardennes) with the world. I wanted to make something authentic, durable, strategic and made of wood. Handmade! The idea of Clash of the Ardennes started 8 years ago, during a holiday break in Croatia and I polished it the following years. Now it is finished and you can be a part of realizing it!

Clash of the Ardennes is produced in my own cozy workshop in Dalfsen, the Netherlands. For the base of the game we use PEFC certified wood (Program for Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes). The rule book is made out of Biotop paper (made of waste wood) and the cover is made of Kraft cardboard (recycled paper pulp). Both paper sorts are environment friendly and sustainable.

Best to you all.

Elwin Klappe

Risks and challenges

My first campaign was a success and I managed to deliver the games within a few months, as promised. So I have good experiences.

But this game is a little bit different. I create the game myself, so I have to rely on my own machinery and ability to finish all the games within a reasonable time frame. I'll do everything in my power to do this! But there is a small risk that games will be send out late, due to failure of machinery or other events that may cause delays. On the other hand, because I create them myself, I'm free to run the lasermachine extra in the evening or weekend for example.

For the printing part I use the services of a digital printing company based in the Netherlands. They have plenty of experience and is well known for its printing. Little risk involved here.
