BACKGROUND

10 months ago I arrived on the island of Bali with only two suitcases and a dream of creating my first fashion collection. I started this journey on my own self-funding the entire process. I am happy to say after a lot of blood sweat and tears 6 dresses stand before me as a product of my labour. As some of you may know fashion takes time to generate sales as we are producing so far in advance. You can play an important role in pushing this dream forward by helping to fund the next fashion season collection and the production of this season’s orders.

WHO IS PART OF THE TEAM?

Team what team? I know everything looks rather produced, but the team literally consisted of myself the first 5 months. Then I had an intern join to film the creative process in Bali, along with my sister helping out with the marketing and a fashion intern in London. The rest has been a combination of the 3 F’s: Family, Friends and Favours.

HOW WILL THE FUNDS BE USED?

The funds generated from this campaign with be used to pay to sample the next season collection Spring Summer 2015 for Elsa Fitzgerald, in addition to the production cost for this season's orders. I am in the process of selling the first collection Autumn Winter 2014/15 but will not receive payments on those orders until the end of 2014.

WHAT'S BALI FASHION DREAM?

Bali Fashion Dream is a blog that I started when I first moved out to the island of Bali. As I was on my own I wanted to keep my family and friends up to date on my comings and goings. I also wanted to show that the impossible is possible but that it doesn’t come easy. These past 10 months have been the most painful and rewarding of my entire life. Due to a significant following with over 30,000 views in my first 2-3 months from over 52 countries, I was inspired to write a book about the journey.

FEEDBACK FROM BLOG READERS

  • “… I really admire how you combat the negatives that cross your path with such positivity and sometimes when I’m having a bit of a hard day keeping positive, a post you make helps lift me back up, so thank you for helping me even from so far away. I hope that in time and with self belief my positive thoughts will counteract all the negative ones.”
  • “You may not remember this, but I was one of two girls who stopped you in the street in London to comment on the amazing back of your dress, which you then told us you’d designed! I’m really glad to follow you again now, and best of luck again with your fashion dream—I would love to someday be able to buy your designs, you’re clearly gifted. ”

OVERVIEW

While walking in Hyde Park, Stacy a successful fashion executive proclaimed to the sky this is the year all her dreams would come true. Everything that could have possibly gone wrong did, but along the way she fell in love, climbed a volcano, volunteered at an orphanage and began to discover her Indonesian heritage. After a year of fighting to keep the dream and herself afloat, the fashion designer returns to London, and puts everything on the line to make a final push to see if dreams do come true.

Bali Fashion Dream follows the inspirational journey of a 29 year old Indonesian American girl who leaves her comfortable life in London and moves to Bali to pursue her lifelong dream of starting a fashion company. Written as a memoir, the book brings to life the struggles of moving to a new country, losing the love of her life, and fighting for a dream.

Risks and challenges

RISKS
Aware of the challenges of setting up a fashion company, I spent 13 years working in the fashion industry for various luxury fashion brands, in addition to studying business, fashion marketing and design. I spent just under a year sampling, product testing and finding various factories that can produce the best quality in an efficient manner. Living 10 minutes from the factory and 2 minute walking distance from the fabric supplier allows me to effectively manage the design and production on a regular basis.

Being half Indonesian and half American has helped with the cultural adjustment. I am able to speak the language which helps to prevent miscommunication due to language barriers. As the factory in Bali is fully functioning, there is no need at present for a pattern cutter, seamstress, quality control etc. All of these roles are properly managed within the factory. I have backup factories in place that I have personally tested and sampled with just in case there are any delays with the main factory.

CHALLENGES
The greatest challenge is funding. In order to hedge the risk of being too reliant on the fashion collection as the business grows, I have written a book to generate extra sales and attention to the brand. In addition to the book we will launch a mini web series on YouTube called Bali Fashion Dream that will highlight life in Bali, while making the next season fashion collection.
