The Pip System is what Third Eye Games has used in the past for a number of family-style RPGs, including Mermaid Adventures and Infestation, An RPG of Bugs and Heroes. Each of those games and their mechanical iterations have been nominated for Best Family Game at the ENnie Awards. We've taken what lessons these first editions had to teach to further develop and expand upon the game and its systems. Our goal is a complete toolbox of mechanics for almost any gaming experience. The Pip System Corebook has all you need to create characters in a Modern, Fantasy, Sci-Fi or Spooky! setting, each with their own gear and equipment, character backgrounds, and tone, but all the while using the same core set of mechanics to make the game happen.

The Pip System uses six-sided dice of two different colors (generally denoted as white dice and black dice, but it could be any two colors you have) to determine if a character’s task succeeds or fails. White dice are positive for the character (marked as W), representing their degree of skill in a task. Black dice (marked as B) are negative dice, representing the difficulty of the challenge presented. 2W would mean the player would roll 2d6 white dice, and 2B means the player would roll 2d6 black dice. Using the black and white dice gives an immediate look at your chances of success. Lots of white dice and you’re more likely to win. Lots of black dice and it’s obvious that the cards are stacked against you. Players, especially kids, respond really well to visually knowing your odds.
Using an example from Infestation: A Beetle with Knowledge 3 tries to find the way through a Challenge Rating 2 (CR2) junk maze in The Above (Attic). The player would grab 3W (equal to their Knowledge Skill) and 2B (equal to the CR) and rolls them together to determine success.
When rolling dice, players are looking for successes. In the Pip System, a success is a 4, 5, or 6 rolled on your 1d6. A success on a white die works in favor of the player, while a success on a black die hurts the character by nullifying successes on white dice. A player needs at least 1 success on a white die for their character to succeed at their Task.
It sounds simple, and in many ways it really is, but there are also a lot of factors that can add or take dice away, increase the CR, create exploding dice possibilities, allow rerolls, or otherwise affect a player’s chances at success.

The Pip System's specialty is its suitability for any group. We’ve had groups who have played very serious-toned games with the Pip System, full of blood and guts and battles, at the same cons where other groups used the Pip System for more family-styled games, like mermaids, bugs, or magical campers. The core mechanics that make up the Pip System Corebook are easily adaptable, customizable, and more complex than they might appear on the surface.
Now I know what you’re saying, “My kid is 8 and plays D&D with me all the time” or “My kids took to Savage Worlds really easily,” and we think that’s awesome! However, the Pip System was created and designed with the express purpose of catering to everyone at the table. To be approachable for a newcomer of any age, without the need for a lot of assistance. For the most part, there isn’t a rule that kids get better than adults or vice versa. Some parents grab Pip System games to play with their kids for the first time. Some kids pick up our books, read them, and run games for their families. Not only are they encouraged to do this by their family or friends, but also by the book, which acts as an instruction manual for GMing. It can be used as a stepping stone to the next big, more traditional game, or players can simply expand upon the Pip System Corebook itself to add complexity. If the rules are too complicated, we're also including rules on how to simplify them to your group's level, as well.
The goal of the Pip System Corebook we are developing is to come up with a set of rules, mechanics, and guidelines that anyone can pick up, play, and love, regardless of age, and regardless of experience in the RPG hobby.
TLDR: Print Copies available at cost after the Kickstarter ends for the Corebook and any Setting Books you pledge for.
Our design team has worked tirelessly to bring this project to life. The final product is estimated to be 6x9, 140-160 pages, with beautiful color interior art, which will be available in both softcover and hardcover. The Pip System Corebook is 90% done right now and we are on track to debut the final product at GenCon 2017. The majority of the funds from this Kickstarter will be used to round out the art we've collected for the book already, commission talented adventure writers, and to further develop the new settings for release. Best part about becoming a backer, however, is you'll get it earlier than everyone else for helping us make it a reality in the first place!
Through this Kickstarter, you are backing for a number of Pip System Setting PDFs. Available to start are the Pip System Corebook, Mermaid Adventures, and Infestation, An RPG of Bugs and Heroes, each for $15, which will be the standard price for all Pip System PDFs. Settings unlocked through Stretch Goals will have the same price through the Kickstarter, as well.
Once the Kickstarter is done, fulfillment will be done through DTRPG, allowing for much of the process to be streamlined. You'll receive a download code for the PDFs you want, as well as the ability to purchase the print by paying for the printing (at cost) and shipping. This does two things: 1) Allows all of the funds for the project to go to making it as great as possible, and not toward shipping and printing expenses, and 2) Gives you the flexibility to choose the format of the book you'd like (softcover or hardcover) and have it shipped when you want and at whatever speed you desire.
In addition to the rewards you back for, every backer who pledges at least $15 will get a collection of four adventures for the Pip System for FREE, perfect for getting yourself started using the system. These four adventures will model the genres presented in the corebook: Modern, Spooky!, Fantasy, and Sci-Fi. By defeating the Tier Guardians and unlocking Stretch Goals, we'll be able to unlock even more!
In addition to the awesome rewards backers can acquire, there is a creature guarding an unlockable prize hidden behind each tier. Only with your help can each Guardian be defeated. Guardians have a Health value, and each backer deals 1 points of damage to that total.
For each Guardian defeated, Third Eye Games will add one new adventure for the Pip System to the Pip Adventure Collection that will be given to backers for FREE!
In addition to included genres in the Pip System Corebook, this Kickstarter offers a number of settings that adapt the rules to different genres and tones. Conversions of our previous releases, Mermaid Adventures and Infestation, An RPG of Bugs and Heroes, are making a comeback! Others will be unlocked through Stretch Goals. As we unlock new settings, that will open up new Tiers and Tier Guardians as well.
We’ve got some awesome stretch goals lined up, with fantastic adventures ready to be added to the Pip Adventure Collection, brand new Setting Books, and maybe even some other cool things down the line!
We hit $5,000, so we are releasing a new setting, A Kid's Guide to Monster Hunting
If we hit $7,000, we will release a new setting, Super Sentai, and add a new tier to this Kickstarter
Plenty more Stretch Goals to come!
Risks and challenges
As an experienced RPG publisher and having several successful Kickstarters funded and fulfilled over the years, Third Eye Games has learned the ins and outs of projects like this one and how to release on time. There are obvious delays due to artwork production, family emergencies, and the like, but we are building in a timeframe that is conducive to finishing this project on time.
Any other books unlocked through Stretch Goals will have their own release dates, separate from the Pip System Corebook, and we'll be updating backers on projections of these dates as they unlock. Some of them are nearly done, while others are currently in development.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
