What if a popular series of stories about a young wizard had been written by H.P. Lovecraft?
As a student at the prestigious H.P. Lovecraft Preparatory Academy, you’ll uncover conspiracies, deal with bullies and uncaring professors, explore dangerous steam tunnels, study for exams, escape from horrible monstrosities that humanity was never meant to see, and try to avoid an extended stay at Arkham Sanitarium. And that's just orientation week!
I bet you’re wondering, “What parent would send their child to a school like this?” Well, you’re not exactly a “normal” student. You’ve got supernatural powers! As a Witch, you can bend the eldritch forces of the universe to your will… what could possibly go wrong with that? Or you could be a Mad Scientist, developing strange and wondrous gadgets that almost never explode. Maybe you’re a Hybrid, forced to hide your alien features and disturbing powers. Or you could be a Summoner, accompanied by a terrifying little critter that follows you around like a puppy… if the puppy was inside out and covered with tentacles. Maybe you’re a Dreamer, with the power to invade and manipulate sleeping minds. And if you choose to be a Monday (normal kid), there's always money and exceptional skills.
- A semi-humorous RPG in the tradition of Saturday morning cartoons featuring mystery-busting kids…only the monsters are real.
- Features a detailed sandbox environment on the campus of a haunted New England boarding school.
- Six different Student Types to choose from, including Witches, Summoners, or Mad Scientists.
- A simple task resolution derived from the PDQ System: roll 2d6 + skill modifier against a target number.
- Design your own faculty! Want Dr. Frankenstein to be the new Biology professor? No problem!
- Thanks to the medical breakthroughs developed by Dr. West in the school infirmary, your character can’t die…but sanity is another matter entirely.
- Tons of optional rules to customize your individual game.
These are the 6 classes available to player characters.
During the day, a Dreamer isn't any different from other kids. At night, however, they can enter other people’s dreams where they can learn closely-guarded secrets, inflict terrible nightmares, manipulate their victim’s subconscious, or seize control of their victim’s body. When entering a dream, however, there’s always a chance that the subject’s unconscious mind may detect the intruder and attempt to destroy them. And getting injured in a dream hurts just as much as is does in the real world.
Someone in the hybrid’s family tree wasn't quite human. The hybrid’s blood may have traces of ghoul, Deep One… or something else entirely. As a result, they often have trouble passing for human. Hybrids may have bulgy, fish-like eyes, gibbering mouths on their torso, tentacles, goat-like legs, or any number of aberrations. On the plus side, their ancestry provides certain benefits, such as the ability to eat anything, incredible strength, regeneration, claws and fangs and more. Most people find hybrids gross, so hybrids have to be careful to hide their mutations.
In the hands of a mad scientist, natural laws are more like guidelines. Mad scientists spend a lot of time building and tinkering with their wondrous gadgets, creating astounding and sometimes bizarre devices. Blasters, robots, force fields, glue guns, evolution rays – these are all possible through science! Although these gizmos aren’t as flexible as magic, they’re a bit safer and other people can use them, too.
Most of the students at the academy don't have any powers whatsoever. The students with supernatural abilities call them "Mondays," slang for "Mundanes." However, even among Mondays, some students stand out among their peers, either due to their prodigious skills or their family's reputation. These students make up for their lack of powers with superior skills and abilities that can make a big difference in their day-to-day lives. For example, the Trustie (rich kid) is good at using their family’s money and influence to get what they want.
Summoners have had the fortune (misfortune?) of adopting a horrible little creature that defies modern biology and sanity. No two of these creatures are alike: Some scuttle along on spider-like legs while others fly on a myriad of insect wings. Some resemble wriggling aquatic creatures while others look like a bubbling pile of organs and eyes. Some may play catch with a ball and others may prefer to catch the local wildlife. Students who possess one of these creatures can expect a constant battle of wills as the monster tries to break free of their control.
Through a combination of arcane study and inherited talent, witches have learned how to manipulate the primal forces of the universe. Magic is not only very dangerous in the hands of an experienced witch, but also very flexible. Witches can cast curses, fling bolts of eldritch energy, render themselves invisible, and much more. Manipulating these primal forces isn’t easy, however, or everyone would be doing it. If the witch loses control of these energies, it could spell their doom. Or worse.
This Kickstarter campaign for H. P. Lovecraft Preparatory Academy (or HPL Prep for short) is to fund the work that has already gone into this great game, the forthcoming art, and to get a print run done to maximize the quality of the end result. We anticipate a 6x9, softcover, black and white interior book at ~300 pages. You can also add $10 to your tier to make your copy of HPL Prep a Hardcover version instead. This is a complete game and everything you need to play will be in the corebook, but we have some extras ready to go as well!
In fact, the game is already fully written and playtested, and currently in editing (soon to be in layout). This means the turnaround for the final product will be pretty quick, hopefully not longer than a couple of months (to give the artists a chance to create some amazing pieces -- you can't rush true art!).
UNLOCKED - $5,000 - Add "Chosen of the Nodens" Class
At this level, we will include a PDF for a new Monday type called the Chosen of the Nodens. Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Descendants. You were born for a certain task, whether you like it or not.
UNLOCKED - $6,000 - Add "Carries" Class
At this level, we will include a PDF for a new Student type called the Carries. You'll have a vast array of mental powers, like mind reading, pyrokinesis or telekinesis, but will you lose your mind in the process?
UNLOCKED - $8,000 - Pip System Conversion

While all backers will receive the PDF for free when this is unlocked, print copies will also be made available at that time.
UNLOCKED - $10,000 - Savage Worlds Conversion
At $10,000 we will convert H. P. Lovecraft Preparatory Academy to the Savage Worlds System (from Pinnacle Entertainment Group).
