About this project
Update Nov 4, 2014
- $5 Add-On for Bonus Adventure: This nets you a cool adventure written by the creator of Apocalypse Prevention, Inc., Eloy Lasanta.
Third Eye Games is launching a 2nd Edition of their iconic, flagship RPG, Apocalypse Prevention, Inc., rebuilt from the ground up and packed with more action, horror and fun! Also includes additional material for API Savage Worlds.
In 2008, Eloy Lasanta released Apocalypse Prevention, Inc., an Action, Horror RPG with a Twist of Humor, which then went on to spawn five sourcebooks and a Savage Worlds conversion of the original corebook. Now, six years later, it is time to revisit this world and bring it up a notch. Apocalypse Prevention, Inc. 2nd Edition (or API2E) is going to bring a more streamlined and exciting experience to fans and new players alike.
In API2E, players take the role of agents working for a shadowy corporation defending the Earth from the various beings who want to destroy it and the entire dimension. This includes monsters and demons from other worlds, as well as those of the domestic flavor. Those demons who choose to call Earth their home and live in (some) harmony with humanity have been invited to join API. The company takes in new agents and trains them in three key categories that help in this task:
- Field Combat: Not only are the agents equipped with state-of-the-art and often futuristic weaponry, but many are masters of martial arts.
- Magic: Some are born with it, but most are taught how to wield magic. If the bad guys are using it, then there are no rules against it, right?
- Cybernetics: When normal weaponry won't do (or someone's lost a body part in the line of duty), cybernetics are implemented to enhance the agent.
Once they have the tools they need to take on the night, they are thrust out into a world of mystery and danger, often on a shoe-string budget. Make no mistake, API is a for-profit company and it has a bottom line. Sure it'd be easier to take out the three-story gorilla monster with a sonic cannon, but you'll have to find another way to do it unless you convince HQ there is money to be made. Some agents spend more time on expense reports than fighting demons.
At the end of the day, agents are no one. They have been plucked from their normal lives and recruited to serve in a fight no one knows about. The public is blissfully unaware of the existence of demons and magic, and the agents are cut off from their families, so there's no one to write home to. Everyone has their reason for joining, though, and these reasons are important to the overall job they have chosen to do.
The final book will be 8.5" x 11" with black and white interior art. Softcover versions will sell for $29.99 and hardcover versions will sell for $39.99. We currently have Mike Mumah on board to do more art for API2E, Daniel Wong who is created a fabulous cover and a few others of note. Here's a breakdown of the Tiers as well.
Apocalypse Prevention, Inc. 2nd Edition will be using the Dynamic Gaming System 2.0 (or DGS2.0). This newly crafted game engine is similar to its predecessor, with a few improvements.
Playable Races: Now with more DEMONS! API2E will include 20 playable races (10 from API1E and 10 demons newly created for this awesome reimagining).
- Reasons: Replacing the Passions system is the new Reasons system, where the players get to choose the Reason their agent joined the company and the Reason they stayed, each providing a context for character interaction and specialized training modifiers.
- Dice: DGS2.0 uses only a single D20 for all checks, resulting in all rolls being 1d20+Modifiers for a highly streamlined experience.
- Magic: Magic remains fully customizable, with new options for those wanting to switch things up.
- Cybernetics: Implants have been kicked up a notch, giving more options for subtle or hidden cybernetics and brand new uses as well!
Combat: Battles have been streamlined to give a back and forth Initiative experience without use of the Combat Tracker from the previous edition. Lots of options to perform special maneuvers, magic and the like as well.
Apocalypse Prevention, Inc. Savage Worlds Edition will also be getting a rules update PDF with all the new monsters and playable options featured in API2E converted to Savage Worlds for all you Savage fans out there.
More will be revealed in a lot more detail as the campaign progresses. Be sure to ask the questions you want answered!
Interested in seeing what Apocalypse Prevention, Inc. 1st Edition contained? We have the PDF for the 1st Edition corebook available as a Pay-What-You-Want product through DriveThruRPG for the duration of the Kickstarter for 2nd Edition. Download that HERE.
ENnie-Nominated game designer Eloy Lasanta is the one-man army responsible for API in the first place, creator of the whole world and everyone in it, mwahahahahahaha! He created Third Eye Games in 2008 and has written a few other games of his own, including Wu Xing: The Ninja Crusade, Part-Time Gods, Mermaid Adventures, Camp Myth: The RPG, Infestation and AMP: Year One, as well as jumped onto projects from other companies like the Firefly RPG, KidWorld and Tianxia.
Eloy is taking up the mantle of primary developer, layout artist and surfer jams wearer for Apocalypse Prevention, Inc. 2nd Edition and can't wait to bring his new vision to all the new and old API fans out there!
Bill "Teh Ebil Bunneh" Keyes
Bill has been gaming for over 30 years, starting with the original hardback AD&D books in 1980. He discovered the Champions superhero RPG at the age of 11, and has been running heroic adventures ever since. People keep coming back to play, so he must be doing something right.
Bill worked as the layout designer / art director for Hero Games (Lucha Libre Hero, the Hero System Bestiary, Hero System Martial Arts Handbook, Hero System Equipment Guide, and others), Silverback Press (Champions the LARP), and Blackwyrm Publishing (Kazei 5, Terracide, The Fires of Heaven, and others). His first book, The Widening Gyre, is a world of steampunk and sorcery for Savage Worlds.
Known as "The Bunny" by his fellow gamers (for reasons we are unable to explain), he claims to have been elected President in an rigged vote, conquered the Midwest, been shot and killed at least once, sworn (and achieved!) vengeance on the gods themselves, crowned himself King of the World, become the arch-enemy of a llama, deposed the Pope, and had torrid love affairs with several well-known movie starlets. It is unlikely that any of these things are true, but it's best to humor him when he gets like this.
Marc was manufactured at a JVC facility as part of a limited-run product line. He continues to provide physical and psychological health services to computers in need. He has been writing for Posthuman Studios since 2010, and his writing list includes Ennie-winning adventure Continuity, Ennie-nominated source book Rimward, and Transhuman. He has also written the carefully quarantined fiction, Octojean Veinous and the Space-Time Robots or Possibly the Laundry Pile, a Depending-on-what-you-Choose space mollusk gigolo time-romance-adventure story.
Marc’s repertoire of work on the unspeakably terrifying was recently expanded with his recruitment into Third Eye Games this year, where he works on demons, insectoid aliens, and princess mermaids. Marc lives with his wife and two children, where he also services and maintains an infinite cat portal.
Ryan Schoon is relatively new to the indie role playing scene, but that hasn't stopped him from making a quick impression. He is a professional dolphin whisperer and served as lead writer for the Edara: A Steampunk Renaissance and was deeply involved with its mechanics as well. The game released this year to strong sales and supportive reviews. He has gone on to write an adventure supplement to the hit Call of Catthulhu RPG and to work as a writer for Fragged Empire, which will be releasing in the near future. Ryan is proud to be working on the second edition of API, a game which is as fun to write as it is to play.
Andrew McColl is a life-long geek and Kiwi, raised on a broad diet of sci-fi and fantasy books, movies, and TV shows in an idyllic land now known as Middle Earth. He started gaming almost 20 years ago and has played in more campaigns and one-shot adventures than he can remember. Apocalypse Prevention Inc. 2nd Edition is his first official writing gig, though he also penned a Free RPG Day adventure for Exile Game Studio’s Hollow Earth Expedition.
Shipping is the bane of all Kickstarters (and I've experienced my fair share of shipping headaches through the years), so I want to do something different this time around for those getting print copies (or other physical items). There are no shipping charges added into any of the tiers. This means that once the Kickstarter finishes and the book is ready to ship, each backer will be responsible for paying shipping separately.
What this does is clean up the process for everyone involved. First off, it means that the funds raised by this kickstarter will 100% go toward making Apocalypse Prevention, Inc. 2nd Edition (and any unlocked Stretch Goals) as amazing as possible. Secondly, we can ask for less money in our Funding Goal since we're not attempting to account for shipping expenses now when fees may have changed when the book is ready to ship.
We have great shipping facilities, which allows us to save quite a bit on even international shipping. Based on our previous shipping experience, we estimate Domestic shipping between $6 to $10, while International shipping will likely be somewhere around $15 to $20. Ranges are dependent upon how many Sourcebooks you pick up. All shipping charges will be processed through BackerKit while you are filling out your survey, which streamlines the whole process.
As we have many fans of the DGS and Savage Worlds systems for API, we are going to be releasing all future sourcebook material for both systems. Our Stretch Goals are for updating all the material already out there to both systems in order to prepare the game line for future books.
API Worldwide: Canada will be reissued with full conversion to 2nd Edition and Savage Worlds, and get a new cover as well.
Demon Codex: Lochs will be reissued with full conversion to 2nd Edition and Savage Worlds, and get a new cover as well.
API Worldwide: Europe will be reissued with full conversion to 2nd Edition and Savage Worlds, and get a new cover as well.
Demon Codex: Spectrals will be reissued with full conversion to 2nd Edition and Savage Worlds, and get a new cover as well.
API Worldwide: South America will be reissued with full conversion to 2nd Edition and Savage Worlds, and get a new cover as well.
We will release a full-color API comic for everyone to enjoy! We have some previews that we'll be sharing as the Kickstarter goes on. It looks amazing! Jay Peters - Writing, Chuck Bordell - Pencils and inks, Jenny Dibble - Colors, Gary Beatty - Lettering.
That's right! If we hit this level, everyone involved with the project will receive a nice raise!
We also have plenty of other goals that we'll reveal as we cross off some of the ones here already.
Risks and challenges
First draft of the book has been submitted and we have begun rewrites/edits and the art direction process. We've given ourselves a wide berth of time here for API2E so we have room to breathe. My guess is that even working at a slow pace, we'll easily hit the Feb 2015 target, if not getting the book done slightly sooner. Possible hiccups include art issues, but we have a variety of artists working on this book, so our success doesn't hinge on any single artist getting their stuff in on time. Additional time may be needed for the conversion of the sourcebooks, but that depends on how many get funded during the stretch goals.
In short: This is our 10th Kickstarter and we are known for hitting our targets. Trust us, we'll get it to you on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
