About this project
Zoom! is a picture book that will inspire young adventurers and their families to discover the joy of bicycling.
The story follows an active, happy toddler's adventures on his balance bike—a type of children's bike that kids propel by running rather than pedaling.
He scoots his bike confidently through the mountains and mud, puddles and rain, and in the desert surrounded by cactus. He wears his favorite helmet as he rides with his dog, with his brother, and with his whole family.
The book is eight full pages, with bold, colorful art by Kellie Day and simple, fun, rhyming text by Jennifer Charrette and Marcia Kinne (with a foreword by professional bike racer George Hincapie). Printed either as a board book or on sturdy, glossy paper, it is designed to suit your bold young bicyclist's imagination and attention span.
The story of Zoom!
Zoom!'s story of courage, adventure, and the power of family goes well beyond the book. The story and its central character are in honor of Axel Charrette, an exuberant two year old with a talent and passion for riding his balance bike.
On February 28th, 2013, Axel was murdered. In the wake of the tragedy, his family—Jen, Randy, and his brother Kalden—decided to honor his memory by helping other families to discover and embrace bicycling as a means of living passionately and boldly. This book is one part of that plan.
Elly Blue Publishing produces and distributes books and zines that inspire people to build a strong, feminist bicycling movement.
Risks and challenges
We've completed 16 successful Kickstarter projects leading to the funding and publication of books and zines, and we're pretty sure there isn't much that can surprise us now. Which is to say that we already know that mistakes will be made, formatting errors will come up at the last minute, budgets will be readjusted, and production schedules will get away from us. It also means that we are prepared for all that and more, and we are confident that the final product will be inspiring, empowering, well-printed, and made with love.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
