An illustrated bike yoga zine with exercises, breathing, and philosophy for cyclists and yoga practitioners alike. By Kelli Refer!

Pedal, Stretch, Breathe is a zine written and drawn by Kelli Refer. It is intended for people who do yoga to incorporate bicycling into their practice, and for people who ride bicycles to learn about using yoga breathing, stretches, and philosophy to ride more happily.

If you're a bicyclist who's curious about yoga (or just about why your hips feel so tight after a long ride) or a yoga practicer who's curious about cycling, you'll enjoy this small book. In a friendly, accessible voice, Kelli brings together the details with the big picture. Breathing techniques, hamstring stretches, Seattle's bike infrastructure and urban gardening movement, the science of particulate pollution, and the broad philosophical metaphors of yogic teaching all tie together convincingly in ways you never expected.

Sections of the zine include: How to breathe your way up the steepest hills; a flow chart of stretches for your achey knees and tight hips; a guide to your bicycle's chakras that will charm any skeptic's heart; and more! 

Bikes! Yoga! What's the connection?

Good question. Here's how Kelli puts it together:

"Riding my bicycle around the beautiful hills of Seattle has cultivated strength in my body and passion in my heart. I believe that yoga and bicycling greatly inform each other on both physical and mental level. Both are great tools for connecting people to their bodies and the present. I want to take my yoga out of the studio and put it on the bike path. It is my hope to bring yoga to more bike rides and riders, showing them how to stretch without a mat and even using your bicycle as a prop."

Two of Kelli's comics showing how to do yoga with your bicycle appeared in the fifth volume of Taking the Lane. Pedal, Stretch, Breathe will include more poses like this as well as essays, research, and suggested routines.

About the Author

Kelli Refer lives in Seattle and has been a yoga instructor since 2009. Her Yoga for Bikers blog is one of the inspirations for this zine. (Author photo, above, by Althea)

About Taking the Lane Media

Taking the Lane started in 2010 as a quarterly series of zines about bicycling from a feminist perspective, written by a wide range of contributors and edited and published by me, Elly. It's still being published -- and every issue is still funded on Kickstarter! I've learned the ropes pretty well and it's time to branch out into new ways of publishing small, print nonfiction titles about diverse aspects of bicycle transportation. Pedal, Stretch, Breathe is Taking the Lane Media's first zine by an outside author ... stay tuned for more titles in the very near future!
