Update #6

Disaster! has shipped. Did yours arrive?

Comment

Hi backers,

Just a quick update to let you know that all of the backer rewards for "Disaster!" officially shipped out over a week ago and should have arrived at your door by now (with the possible exception of folks who live outside North America). If you didn't receive your mail, please let me know and I'll get you sorted out right away.

In other news, the next issue, "Bikes in Space," is moving along on schedule with no need to deploy any powers of slowness. The Kickstarter campaign for that one ended last week -- preorders are now available through Taking the Lane. Those of you who got rewards that involve subscriptions or supersubscriptions will receive this one automatically.

More good stuff is coming up. The expanded edition of Kelli Refer's Pedal, Stretch, Breathe is in the hopper, and Anna Brones' cookbook The Culinary Cyclist is getting set to launch. The 11th issue of Taking the Lane is also getting going -- the theme this time is dogs. Also, there is an audio zine in the works. And more...

As always, stay in touch. And you can keep up with our publishing news via twitter, facebook, and the monthly-ish e-newsletter

Big thanks to you all -- these things could not be made and this fun could not be had without you.

Elly

Update #4

No disasters, just moving slowly

Comment

Hi backers,

Once upon a time I worked briefly as a bike messenger. It was a humbling experience that left me with a lot of respect for traffic, my own limits, and people who do this tough mental and physical work year-round.

The family that ran the company was extra concerned about our safety. "Slow, safe roll" was the radio mantra, and riders boasted of using their "powers of slowness" to save time and trips -- and limit risk -- by waiting to see if multiple pickups would be called in before rushing off to deliver something across town.

As befits the theme of the Disaster issue, I'm taking this editorial process at a slow, very safe roll. No hasty decisions, not rushing to print, waiting til the revisions are in and then revising again. It's slower than is probably necessary, but there's time built in to take it slow, and each week that goes by is making the finished product that much better.

All that said, the issue should still be out, as promised, in February. Thanks for your patience -- I'm hoping it'll be worth it. Also, it's a good time to start thinking about issue #10, which has a pretty funny theme. The call for submissions is open to everyone.

Also, one of the things that's been percolating this month is that small question of the future of Taking the Lane. Help me figure it out by taking this super short survey....

Thank you! And as always, feel free to write and say hi.

Elly

Update #3

Funded! And some thoughts about business.

Comment

Thank you all so much.

Two days ago I woke up feeling extremely nervous about this project. Not just would it be funded, but would it be any good? Yesterday I went to bed elated, having just watched the counter tick over to 100%. My anxiety over the quality of the issue itself had completely evaporated, in part because yet more awesome content had rolled in, and in part because that gigantic boost of confidence and clarity is all part of the emotional cycle that comes along with running a Kickstarter project.

This morning, there are 111 of you -- and counting. Another 96 subscribers are signed up to get copies of this issue; and 20% of the print run on top of that is destined to be split among contributors. That means that potentially, by the time this issue makes it into print and into your mailboxes (that's scheduled for late January but promised for February because that's how things go), half the print run or more could be out the door. Wow.

This awesome reality is bringing up all sorts of big-picture questions of growth and scale (as well as concrete ones of production and budgets) that need to be addressed in planning the business side of Taking the Lane's next year. That's the scary part -- on the creative side, we already have big plans going that inspire nothing but confidence and excitement. Besides four more issues of this quarterly journal, we've got at least four stand-alone books by other authors in the pipeline. On top of that, two of our bestselling titles will be re-released in expanded editions. And there will be some other fun things like blank books, more stickers, and...we'll see what else!

(Point of interest: the "Mailbox Love" subscription nets you all of that at a serious discount -- it's one of the backer reward options here, and you can also sign up at http://takingthelane.com/product/mailbox-love-2013

At some point sooner in the year rather than later, I'm probably going to need to branch out and not do all of this myself, from my living room. When I think about that I get a little rush of panic ... and then I remember that it's never actually been just me alone. Thanks to all of you for being part of this in ways big and small ... and for being part of building this amazing and contrary bicycle movement that continues as it grows to be hungry for literature about itself. Whew. Here's hoping it doesn't stop soon, because I've got big plans for it.

Keep on pedaling, and keep in touch,

Elly

Update #2

A peek inside the Disaster! issue

Dear everyone,

I aimed high with the Kickstarter project this time, mainly because the price of paper keeps going up (and my estimates of postage costs are always too low), and in part because ambitious plans are afoot here at Taking the Lane HQ. You all have turned out in awesome support -- Thank you!

Now for the big ask: If you know anyone else who could be in the market for some brainy, well-designed, pocket-sized bicycle inspiration, point them this way today, please.

We can't go to print if this isn't fully funded. If it isn't, I'll try to figure out a way to do it anyway, but ... fingers crossed that won't be necessary.

Oh, and I've added some new limited reward levels. I am completely squeamish about being on video --  so I made a video. And have promised video rewards. Because getting by in tough times is all about facing your fears, right? So feel free to move your pledges around any time during the campaign... or just giggle at the mental image and move on. It'll be a blast. (On a side note, I should not be allowed around the iMovie effects unsupervised....)

Sneak peek time: Attached here is one of the illustrations for Disaster!, just sent in yesterday evening by this issue's artist, Katura Reynolds

We'd kicked around a few ideas for what she could draw, and they were all too good to choose between. So I asked her to surprise me, and she did -- to awesome effect.

I love that several of her "people-on-the-street" sources talk about the power of community before, during, after, and in forestalling an emergency. This theme has also been emerging as a subtext among the submissions. And Taking the Lane is a community effort on so many levels. Thank you again for being part of it.

It's been a troubling week and I hope you all are weathering it well.

With lots of heart from Portland, Oregon,

Elly
