Biketopia: Feminist Bicycle Science Fiction Stories

Welcome to Biketopia! This is the 4th volume of the more-or-less annual Bikes in Space series.

In this new book, we bring you 10 short stories and one comic about utopias and dystopias. Each one involves bicycles, because let's face it, there weren't enough dinosaurs to power the rocket fuel used in most science fiction. And each story takes on (or ignores) gender norms, because why should people in the future conform to our same boring old roles and classifications?

Here are some dilemmas you'll get to face alongside the characters in these stories if this project is funded:

  • In the solarpunk future, will robots have rights, too?
  • When your health is closely monitored during a pregnancy, who gets to decide if bicycling is healthy or dangerous for your unborn child?
  • How do you survive the day to day in a community where you have zero freedoms, including freedom of movement?
  • When your agrarian society relies on bikes and now you're at war with the city where the factory is, how do you replace your broken spoke?
  • What is the secret behind some people's seemingly random plague immunity, and is it okay for them to take your bike?
  • Is the sexy stranger who rode into your desolate desert oasis a man or a woman or does it even matter?

The book also contains reviews of more science fiction books, stories, and TV shows.

If this project is fully funded, we'll pay for printing first and then split everything above that amongst the authors of the stories in this volume. So think of your pledge as not just getting a book, but buying an author a cup of coffee to fuel their next story.

Who are we and why are we doing this???

Elly Blue Publishing publishes the feminist bicycle revolution under the umbrella of Microcosm Publishing in Portland, Oregon.

I've been a science fiction nerd since childhood, and announced a feminist bicycle science fiction issue of my zine on a whim a few years ago. It turned into an unbelievably fun passion project, and this is the fourth installment with no end in sight!

Oh yeah, and you're warmly invited to contribute a story to volume 5. The deadline is March 1. The theme is "Intersections." Here's the call for submissions.

About the rewards

The main event: Biketopia: Feminist Bicycle Science Fiction Stories in Extreme Futures contains 11 short stories and a passel of reviews in 160 pages.

The Biketopia poster:

We took out the words so that cover artist Cecilia Granata's vision could shine out on your wall.

The Bikes in Space Quadruple Threat includes:

Biketopia and these three books...

Bikes in Space Vol 1: The zine that began it all!

Bikes in Space Vol 2: Intersectional feminist bicycle science fiction stories continue to win.

Pedal Zombies: This was Bikes in Space volume 3, with an undead theme

The Bikes in Space Quintuple Threat also includes:

The Velocipede Races by Emily June Street -- this is our first Bikes in Space novel, an exciting steampunk sports action story starring a rebellious teenaged girl who wants nothing more than to race her velo

Feminist Bicycle Books Galore includes all of the above plus:

Our Bodies, Our Bikes edited by Elly Blue and April Streeter - Fifty contributors in writing and art about the intersection of bicycling and gender

Cycletherapy edited by Anika Ledlow - On grief, and bicycling through it

Zoom! by Jennifer Charrette with Marcia Kinne - A picture book for littles about a boy who loves nothing more than to ride his balance bike

And the Feminist Bike Books and Zines Pileup adds these:

The Culinary Cyclist by Anna Brones - Recipes and advice for good eating and slow living, inspired by Portland and Paris

Pedal, Stretch, Breathe by Kelli Refer - Yoga exercises and philosophy for bicycling

Taking the Lane back issues. You'll get a selection of the issues that are still in print! All the zines are collections of nonfiction feminist writing about bicycling, with subtopics ranging from religion to disasters to dogs.

Risks and challenges

Yeah, so. In anyone's perfect bicycle utopia (or any kind of utopia), something's going to have to happen with all of society's so-called imperfections, and you're going to end up with ... drumroll ... totalitarianism. My bikeway or the highway! That's not a risk, that's just how it is. So my editorial preference is definitely toward the messy dystopias that are full of possibilities. But read and judge for yourself! And then let's have that debate.
