About this project
My name is Elliott Greenman. I have put together a small team to start up a Tie Dye Specialist Brand and here's my first kickstarter project with my first of (hopefully) many ranges. I thoroughly enjoy making them and the experimentation that comes with it. I have designs that have never been done before and I want you to be the first to see and wear them.
My team consist of friends and family who are behind me and my belief that we could wow with an idea for a customisable tie dye t-shirt range.
You may think there is little skill to tie dye, but I would argue otherwise. The designs have been made by me but not only that, there is an art in dyeing with natural materials. So, blowing my own trumpet a little I admit, I would say that my art is in the design and the treatment of the t-shirt. They still have a nice feel and look great.
If you like the idea then please read on... (oh and share it on facebook or something like that).
And write me a comment. It can be about anything, even just saying hey. I'll get back to you as soon as I can, promise.
Like so many of the projects here we're starting something that is fun, unique and a big leap. Tie dye has been a massively popular thing for years now and I want to add my own designs to the artisan craft. Something that proves to those who don't like fluorescent spirals that it can be for anyone. It doesn't have to be flash and it doesn't have to be bright.
Secondly we'd like to bring back the use of various dyestuff. Dyeing has been round for centuries. During the reign of kings and queens from Egypt to Maya the use of natural dyes was a statement of importance. The only important thing to note here is that this was long before the invention of chemical dyes!
And finally we'd like to be as sustainable as possible. By trying to make our project environmentally sustainable but just as importantly economically sustainable and socially sustainable. By using products and dyes with an environmental conscience, allowing you to have your say in the design and keeping the cost to a minimum I believe we can give you full sustainability.
My brand does not yet have a name and neither does this range (although I think i'm just going to call it the 'kickstarter' range). I have been struggling for one so if you have any ideas then please either comment on this project or if you pledge you can write it down on the questionnaire I will be posting if this project gets funded.
In return for us having ownership of that name you will receive 5 t-shirts from this range. Boom. (obviously if we don't use your name then you keep ownership).
More ideas are better then 5 right?
So you might be wondering how it all goes down. All the t-shirts in this selection are designed by me, however you get a say in the colour/s. Just like if you were to buy a t-shirt with a design on it you might be able to choose which colourway you would like. Just with these you don't have any screen printed or vinyl design on the top, so it's just like a plain tee! The only difference is that you will have a completely unique top, the same design as some others out there but possibly a different colour and very slightly different.
- Project gets funded
- I send you a questionnaire asking about sizes, style, colour.
- You respond - The quicker you respond the earlier you get the t-shirt!
- I make the t-shirts (with a little help from my friends).
- I then send the t-shirt out. There we have it, my first range of t-shirt designs out!
All of the t-shirt images are visuals. We took photos of tie dye t-shirts we have already made and put them into a t-shirt template to make them look cleaner and more 'uniform'. This makes it easier for you to see what you're getting and makes 'customising' it easier.
You can now add an extra t-shirt and or a tote bag.
T-shirt from tier 1 for £13
T-shirt from tier 2 for £15
Tote-bag for £7
If you have already pledged then just click 'manage your pledge' and put in the new total including the extra items!
If you haven't already pledged then you just put in the total when asked.
Then, if funding is reached I will send out a questionnaire and ask you what extra items you wanted and it what size, style etc. Sound good? I think so.
Any pledge will get you a discount code if these designs are made in the future.
You guys are the bread and butter of the Kickstarter world. I have seen so many projects that have had a massive boost from the 1pounders/1dollarers. Legends, the lot of you.
£3 Thankyou & Hug
You get unlimited hugs from us. They will never cease. I will send you out a postcard too. Hand drawn and written, it'll be beautiful. I may even send you all a video of my journey too the post office (I cycle along quite a nice route!) and the village the post office is in is seriously beautiful, trust me.
£9 Tote-ally cool Tote bag
Tote-ally Cool. Bet you've never heard that before! Seriously cool accessory. Possibly more for the ladies this one but men have been seen using tote bags (I do!). You can choose almost any style for this one. If it doesn't work then we'll be in contact.
£12 Bundle Dye
This bundle dye was made using tea and rust.
This bundle dye was made using onion skins. Cool Huh? The idea is to create a symmetrical shape but the layout will differ from this one. No two are the same remember!
You can request colour/s and whether you want it symmetrical and I will use my artistic ability to do the the rest. Obviously I won't be using onion skins on all of them!
£16 Tier 1 Tie Dye
This top was mainly designed with those who aren't too keen on big and strong designs. Those who want to be a little bit more subtle.
You can pick your colour. Or two? You could require the t-shirt to be dip dyed, the top half one colour and the bottom half another.
The 'badge' size and shape is also up to your design preferences. Oh and the placement, you could have it anywhere. Thinking about it you could ask for more than one 'badge'! You could have the 'badge' tied so it comes out like the visual above or you could have it shibori style (see below images).
Triangle blocks all over the t-shirt. This is one of our favourites just because it's simple, clean and generally wouldn't be associated with tie dye! Again this one doesn't really work that well with more than one colour but if you want each side of the triangle to be a different colour then we can do that, just for you.
V-shaped design looks striking. Let me know if you want the design to be v-shaped or an upside down v-shape! The amount of V's and colours you choose is up to you!
Self explanatory really. Choose one or two colours and describe how you want it. You might want the dye to only cover the bottom half of the t-shirt and have a sharp change into white. Equally you might want the top half to be coloured and have it gradually fading into the white at the bottom.
Dots in your dye look great (we think so anyway). You can choose however many colours you want. I think it looks a little better with fewer colours but you're going to wear it so you tell us what you want.
Pick a colour and pick your pattern shape. It could be diamond pattern or a grid pattern. Or anything else you think looks cool. If you really fancy it we could draw a smile image in it for you! Using the power of batik the options are nearly endless.
Let us know the colour you require it in and how you want the spread of circles to appear on the t-shirt. You could have a small cluster or have them all over.
You might be thinking 'I am sure Elliott didn't invent this tie dye?!'. Alas, I have created a new way to tying the t-shirt so you have stripes but with a cardiac monitor pulse effect on it. Have the stripes horizontal or vertical, the choice is always yours. Choose how many stripes you want and how many colours. Maybe you want the colours to be alternating? You choose.
Marble dye. It goes by many names this one but we like marble. You can choose as many colours as you like. Go wild and have a 10 dye marble tie dye. You'll be dressed to impress.
£18 Tier 2 Tie Dye
The way this one is made means you can only pick one colour for this top.
You can pick three colours for this one. But it does work well with two!
Diamonds are forever! Pick the colour you want and look forward to your dyed beauty.
New take on the Classic Spiral Tie Dye. Choose what colour you'd like it in!
Many of you will have the colours you want in mind but if you are struggling with what you want think of colour schemes. What do you like? What do you like doing? What animals do you like? You should soon be able to come up with some awesome colour schemes to make this top dazzle.
Every top is unique
We will never be able to do two identical t-shirts. This is one of the limitations with tie dye but that's why we love it so much.
With many of these tops you will be able to say, in the questionnaire we'll send out after completion, what colour/s you want.
Yo, Where does all the money go?
Well, Here's a break down of the costs for you.
30% - Tools. We need heated presses and large tubs for the dyeing in 'mass' production. These will be used to prepare the dyes, mordents and acidifiers/enhancers.
50% - Materials. We have many of the dyes ready to go but more tools will increase the efficiency of the making process. There are so many more dyes we would like to buy in but until now we haven't really had much of a reason. Using naturally extracted chemicals like copper sulphide and iron sulphate you can create different shades with the same dye. We'd like to be the best of the best and by raising this money you will help us get one step closer. Then there is the cost of the organic cotton t-shirts.
10% - This is for postage. To ensure you get it on time and the local post office will love the much needed business!
10% - Labour. I have told so many friends about it and they all want to help in the evenings after their 'real' jobs and on the weekends to get all the orders out. I'm not paying them a wage as such but I will be giving them some money for their work. Call them commissioned artists if you like.
Hopefully you can make sense of this! We will do our level best to send your items out before christmas. We will be prioritising those who have the earliest postage dates trying to get them out a few days before the dates given above so you have time to look at the item and wrap it up nicely for someone special.
Design 1 and 4 will be a tier 1 Tie Dye
Design 2 and 3 will be a tier 2 Tie Dye
We understand there are some Kickstarters who don't particularly enjoy or like the idea of stretch goals but personally we're all for them. Yes they can be an incentive to spend more money but if you have passed your goal it is obvious that you Kickstarters love the idea... So why not give them more choice? Thats our view anyway.
There are a few different styles of t-shirts I have available so check them out and make a note of what size you want. You'll need it at a later date!
It goes without saying really but thankyou so much for even making it this far down our project page. Whether you pledge or not you are all awesome to us and if you could show your support with a pledge or some form of social media share (or both!) then we won't stop you. But seriously, Thankyou. (sorry for using brackets so much, we love em')
Risks and challenges
There are a few on this project. Getting the right colour and shade of the dye is one of the hardest. I have made dyes for so long now I know them well and can make almost any colour you throw at me. Beside every time a dye is made it will be tested on a small patch off cotton (one day I'll find a use for all of the small dyed pieces of cotton).
The other major problem with tie dyeing is fixing the dye. The trick is treating the t-shirt twice before you apply the dye and once again after. Then you dry it and wash it on a cold temperature. There we have it. My tie dyes just go in with my coloured washing.
One more risk is the customisation. We will do all we can do get the t-shirt to look exactly how you imagined. However, if it does get to you and it is a little different then we couldn't be more sorry. We will replace the item of course but then we cannot guarantee you'll have a replacement in time for christmas.
Risks and challenges can be problematic but I have complete faith in my ability to create incredible tops and be a leader so with my team I believe these risks aren't a problem but I would be unrealistic if I didd't mention them!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
