About

Join us to revive this historic interactive program from the 1990s to modernize and permanently share its content on the internet for all to enjoy and learn from, free of charge, for generations to come.

The original creators of the CD-ROM Cheyenne Dog Soldiers: A Warrior History need your help to give this multimedia project a second life on the internet free of charge for all. It tells a history, almost lost, of the courageous Plains Indian warriors, the tragedy at Sand Creek, their battles and coups, and the 1869 Battle of Summit Springs or “White Buttes.”.

We need funds to restore all of the content from this amazing history project and transfer it permanently to the internet. The project was a 1999 CD-ROM and it has been locked away and inaccessible due to software changes since the early 2000s. It contain hundres of artifacts, all of the pages from the earliest known Cheyenne ledger book, a virtual tour of the award winning Cheyenne Dog Soldiers exhibition, many virtual artifacts, animations, and articles and videos explaining what happened during this historic time.

We will first use all funds to secure hosting and to reverse engineer the original digital content to obtain all digital assets for production of a replica of the program and develop and launch it on the web permanently.

Funds will be used to:

  • Make this available to all on the internet Research, locate, and acquire the original digital assets (images, videos, sound files, virtual reality scenes and objects, text), and other files necessary to reproduce the original CD-ROM in HTML.
  • Digitally produce a website that best duplicates the original experience of this title.
  • Pre-pay for domain registration and hosting for at least10 years.

If additional funds are raised, we will create an online framework where Cheyenne people, accredited historians and the public can share facts and discussion about the historic events that happened between 1864 and 1869 on the plains of the U.S. We will add digital assets that were edited out of the original title with a new framework that will present the rest of the story in a format that can be dynamically updated for future technological enhancements and developments.

Additional funds will be used to:

  • Add features that utilize today’s technology to enhance the quality and experience of the original content.
  • Add material that was originally edited out from the original for budgetary reasons.
  • Add features that enable users to contribute to the project and to provide comments and feedback on content pages.
  • Add new areas of content to the site that expand the story.

Background

A CD-Rom was produced in 1999 inspired by the book published by the Colorado Historical Society (now History Colorado) and University Press. Working closely with the Cheyenne people, the authors David Halaas and Andrew Masich also contributed to the interactive title and content selection. The digital publisher and producer, Metaphor, no longer exists. However, one of its founders and the digital producer of the original title retained the original production files, materials, and publishing rights from the project and will direct this project.

Risks and challenges

We had originally proposed to have a group of historical organizations fund this project but each effort fell short due to budget constraints and priorities. If we are self-funded through Kickstarter it will remove those barriers. Other challenges we face are the recovery of the original digital assets from the CD-ROM itself. While we search for the backup files (which may have been destroyed years ago) we will work with what we have, a CD-ROM and a few Macs and PCs that can run the old OS and software needed to extract the images, audio, video and virtual reality materials.

Hosting is relatively inexpensive but we will still need to establish a way to pay for it in perpetuity. We own a hosting company that recently downsized and became a GoDaddy reseller which means we have stability, flexibility and a back up plan. We plan to allocate some funds to a future hosting budget, but not too much as hosting becomes increasingly cheaper.

We work with great developers and graphic production teams and we welcome any volunteer work if we find it necessary and helpful to our process. Should we fall short on our estimates of time needed to complete the project or any portion of it, we will ask our less expensive partners abroad to help if our domestic ones can't offer additional support.

We will also need to have funds available for technology updates and maintenance in case problems arise as the different server applications evolve forward. Not to mention adding features as technology progresses.
