Thank you everyone for checking out and supporting desolate!

desolate is a  hand-painted 2D puzzle adventure game influenced by my experiences, emotions, and my acceptance of self growing up. The game told in seven acts, Desolation, The Desolate, Deception, Corruption, Consumption, Depression, and Realisation.

Story

In the beginning of the game shadowy figures have invaded your village and you must sacrifice your friends and family to them in order to escape. After realising what you’ve done wrong you need to fix the mistakes you’ve made. But not all mistakes can be fixed by apologising. Sometimes change is needed, but reluctantly sought. Sooner or later you will have to face your inner shadows and your inner self to change for the better.

Use the three core interactions of sound, gesture, and touch to communicate with its inhabitants. Experience the gorgeous world inspired by the vast landscapes of New Zealand, and the uniquely confined architecture of Tokyo. Featuring a beautiful score by New Zealand musician Ben Tolich.

Characters

The main character of the game is loosely based on myself, because a lot of the inspiration for the story has come from certain emotions and experiences from my life.
The main character goes through a few different transformations during the game as you can see from first concept below. Each is in response to what has happened and what you have done.

There are also the friends and family that inhabit the village, each hand-painted and with unique animations. You have the chance to help design one of the characters, and how they change over the game.

Under the barren lifeless desert known as The Desolate, lies a series of unknown caves. There we discover some little life living in the shadows. You will have to befriend these curios little cave creatures to help you escape and get back to the village.

Settings

One of the biggest features in desolate is that the whole game is hand-painted. The landscape for desolate has been influenced by where I live and where I am from. I am originally from New Zealand, which has a beautiful landscape, so I put that into the game using references from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
I am currently living in Tokyo Japan which has some very small buildings and spaces but the most amazing culture.
The buildings featured in desolate are all found around Tokyo.
Other parts of the game feature caves from both Nippara and Arizona. Both incredibly beautiful natural formations.

The core mechanics you have never change, what does change with each Act is what is needed of you and how you can interact with the different inhabitants of the world. You will use the three core interactions of touch, gestures, and speak. During each Act the way you interact changes a little.

Touch
Where you might shake the hand of a fellow friend you will try to pat the little cave creature on the head, both of which are done with the Touch button. Touch can also be used to push large boulders out of the way.

Speak
Where the call of your voice might reassure a family member in trouble and make them try to get to you, the call of your voice might scare the same little cave creature and make him run away.

Gesture
Where you can gesture a friend to distract them, you will gesture a cave creature to come towards you.

Movement
There are also platforming elements to the game. You can walk and run around the levels, jump forwards a short distance if walking or a longer distance if running; or jump straight up if you’re standing still.
If you jump straight up you can grab hold and climb some structures in the world, like buildings, rock faces, or ladders.
Quite a few of the puzzles are about spatial reasoning, and moving yourself and others into certain positions for actions to happen.

The later game
A lot of what has been made and shown is only from the first 2 Acts of the game. After Act 2 the way your friends and family react to you has changed along with their appearance. They no longer trust you after being sacrificed to the shadowy figures, and instead fear you.

Without giving too much away the later stages of the game change drastically from the earlier stages. You enter into an internal dialog with yourself, the world you know changes and distorts and the mechanics and what is expected of you distorts as well.

All the music is being recorded by New Zealand musician Ben Tolich.

When asked how Ben went about making the music, he replied
"Elliot Collis is a wonderful artist. I had a look at some screenshots he sent me and tried to write and record my impulse as I reacted to the pictures. I see this game as an interactive art piece and it is joy to be a part of."

Get a DRM-free copy of the game for Mac, Windows or Linux.
Help us get onto Steam via Greenlight, and get a steam Key.
The first Act is due out in December for the Act-by-Act backers.
The full game is due out around July 2015, in English and Japanese.

I need your help to finish this project and get it out to the world. I've been working on desolate part time by myself for the last year. With a few ups and downs, progress has been rather slow.
desolate will be finished even without Kickstarter, but with help from you and everyone on Kickstarter it will enable me to finish the game a lot quicker.

Most of the money will go straight back into the game, hardware, and production. Some will go to Ben Tolich for the music, and the last bit will go to my living costs.

Elliot Collis is originally from New Zealand. After graduating with a Bachelor in Visual Arts, Collis set out to explore the world. Ending up in Tokyo. He has been working on desolate for the last year, and is doing all the art and programming on the game.

Ben Tolich is a musician and songwriter from Auckland, NZ that writes and performs under the name Mali Mali. He released his debut album "Gather 'round the Gooseclock" in 2013 and has been performing regularly since. Tolich is a childhood friend of Collis and was excited by the new challenge of writing music for desolate.

Risks and challenges

There are many risks and challenges making any game, with desolate the biggest risk is not releasing on time.
Because I am making this game almost by myself there is a lot of work I have to do alone. Meeting every deadline can be challenging, but with your support we can make it happen.
Also because I am a foreigner living in Japan, if something goes wrong and I have to leave Japan, there will be small delays in production.
Be assured that desolate will be finished no matter what.

There is also the risk that some of the rewards may take longer then others to make and ship. I will work as quickly as possible to get everything to you as soon as it's ready.

Thank you for your support!
