Over 80% of the internet is powered by the programming language PHP, and behind PHP is a strong community of developers who bond together helping each other out.
Many years ago, the mascot of the PHP community was created by Vincent Pontier, the ElePHPant! Since that time, the elePHPant has been turned into a plush toy sporting blue fur that people fell in love with.
Recently, the elePHPant has been receiving a revival of interest and the blue-furred variety has been joined by multicolored brethren. Each one produced by a different company. The elePHPant has been crafted in blue, red, pink, and green (Plus, there are rumors of yellow, black, and purple floating around).
I'm one of the owners of php[architect], the longest running PHP magazine in the world (11 years now), and we want to produce an elePHPant for the community to enjoy - this time sporting fur in our signature php[architect] orange.
But we need you to make this happen! Producing a run of plushies is rather expensive, and you need to order quite a large number at once. It also takes a while for them to be placed into a production queue and finished. We estimate that it will take 12 weeks from the day we are able to create the order, at the earliest, to when we may receive our shipment. (IT'S SO FLUFFY, I'M GONNA DIE!)
We need your support to make this happen and are counting on you! We also want to make sure that we will be ordering enough of these to satisfy all of our fans. If we run out, we'd have to wait another 12 weeks to receive another order.
For Kickstarter backers, we are also offering a unique opportunity. Anyone who has seen the elePHPant in the past knows that they come in 2 sizes. The standard 'small' which measures around 6" x 5 x 8" and a very rare 'large' elePHPant which measures approximately 14" x 12" x 20". Kickstarter backers can choose to pledge towards a large elePHPant and get one of their very own! These will not be made available outside of the Kickstarter because they are very expensive to produce, so we will not be ordering any extra.
Risks and challenges
There are a number of challenges that we will face, though we are very confident that the order will be completed. It's more a question of timelines at this point.
The elePHPant design is already well-prototyped by the production facility which has made tens of thousand of these in the past, and we've already gotten permission from the elePHPant creator to develop this orange batch.
The main challenge here is simply one of timing. There are two separate issues that come into play here:
First of all, these are going to be produced at a facility in China, and the Chinese New Year celebration happens starting on January 31st and can cause 3 weeks worth of delay. Depending upon the timing of production decisions here, we are hoping to minimize this delay as much as possible, but we might get caught right in the middle of it.
Secondly, we are hoping (though the production house says that the timeline will be tight) to have these available in time for our big annual conference php[tek] in Chicago in May. If the production order is not in our hands within a week before the conference, then it's unlikely that we will get a chance to ship these elePHPants out before the conference itself. Which may cause a few weeks of additional delays for backers. Therefore, we've listed the expected arrival time for these plushies to be June, just to be safe on both counts.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
