So get ready for some fantastic news about AUTHORS COMBAT ACADEMY.
We are an annual convention of authors and experts so writers can learn how fights happen, ask questions of those who live it, and learn from the best how to write amazing fight scenes.
AUTHORS COMBAT ACADEMY is opening up the world of fighting like never before. Come join us to see fighting techniques from medieval to MMA. Learn what happens from the first punch to the ER to the bones. Get tips on pacing, wording and accuracy from the best . . . Write it Right!
ACA started as Author AJ Scudiere shared some of her research techniques with other authors. "Everyone wanted a 'live action figure' like I had. And I had TWO! I used them to mock fight scenes, so I would know what was plausible and how a trained person might react to a given attack. My pose-able fighters asked me great questions like 'how trained is this person, and in what kind of fighting?' 'are there objects in the scene that I can grab?' 'how close is the person with the gun?' 'Is your character right or left handed?' . . . Some of it I had already considered, but every time I worked with them I added something amazing and unique to my fight scene. And it was all completely plausible!"
RENT-A-NINJA is going to be just one of the unique features offered at ACA and it was borne of this idea of using trained people to help mock-up a scene you can't do on your own. At ACA you can work on your own material with 1-3 "ninjas" cross trained in 8 styles of fighting from boxing to Muy Thai to ground grappling and street defense.
"People really do come up to me and say 'It's obvious you're a fighter, you write such amazing fights in your books.' And I always think 'Oh, no, I'm a ballerina. But I have ninjas.'" -- Author AJ Scudiere

We have two levels for attendees:
We will be offering a limited number of discounted admissions! $150 off of Fighting Class Admission to those who qualify. We will offer 15 of these spots PLUS award extras when people purchase them through the website! But DO NOT wait to enroll as we expect to fill up quickly. Purchasing a Fighting Class Admission will not limit your ability to get a scholarship for this year or future years.
Scholarship recipients must have a monetary need. (We do understand this need comes in a variety of forms. If you are having difficulty paying the admission price, PLEASE APPLY!) Applicants cannot have a full novel published in any format. They must be currently working on writing a book and actively working toward becoming published.
Scholarships will be awarded on a rolling basis until all spots are filled. If you want to apply, we recommend booking a Fighting Class Admission now (but it is not required). Then, send an email to ACA@AuthorsCombatAcademy.com with "ACA scholarship" in the subject line and we'll send you everything you need to apply.
Scholarship recipients who submit applications by 6/30 will receive a reply by 8/1.
ACA will be held at the Inn at Opryland! 2401 Music Valley Dr, Nashville, TN 37214
We have secured a special room rate just for ACA attendees. Just $124/night. Some rooms are indoor access and some are outdoor. You can request your preference. Note - rooms with 2 beds are DOUBLE beds, not queen beds. 3 or 4 people to a room might be a little tight. But the rooms are really nice and our conference space is right in the hotel for easy, all day access between your room and classes.
Wifi is free and available in guest rooms and in conference areas. Parking is free and there is a complementary shuttle every 15 minutes from the hotel to The Grand Ole Opry, Opry Mills Mall, and The General Jackson Showboat. An airport shuttle is available roundtrip for just $40.
A breakfast restaurant is available in the hotel atrium (average breakfast is $8) and multiple restaurants are within a very short walk, including Shoneys, Cracker Barrel, and McDonalds. The hotel also has a heated, indoor pool.
AUTHORS COMBAT ACADEMY is being hosted by Griffyn Ink Publishing. Griffyn Ink has published best-selling author A.J. Scudiere (www.ReadAJS.com) and worked with Game Nation Parks on The Archives Series (www.GameNationParks.com/play/gn-archives).
Eli Jackson, CEO of Griffyn Ink, has 30 years of experience in the martial arts. Eli holds a 3rd degree black belt in Isshinryu and will be in the process of getting a second, 3rd degree black belt in MMA as you read this. She has also competed on the world tournament circuit in 2001-2002 ranking 3rd in the world in fighting and 4th in the world in forms.
Griffyn Ink believes in taking fiction to new places. Readers today want to experience fiction in new and innovative ways. We also pride ourselves on focusing on authors who don't follow the popular formulas for stories.
We are 100% dedicated to the safety of all our attendees, presenters, and hosts. All presentations will be done by trained professionals with proper equipment. Attendees will not be asked or allowed to participate in anything unsafe and all demonstration weapons will be monitored.
This is Utukku - the cuddly version of the creature on the cover of God's Eye by A.J. Scudiere. Everyone who enrolls via Kickstarter and attends ACA 2015 gets one of these cuddly guys in their welcome bag!
With Kickstarter, we have to set a funding goal. But that number is just the MINIMUM we need to make this conference a reality. And the truth is, we are running this conference no matter what. We have a full year to get everything in place and we are going to make it happen.
So while we set our KS goal at $4000, it's going to take a lot more than that just to cover expenses. And the more money we raise, the more amazing events we can run and big-name presenters we can bring in.
We have 300 seats to fill and once they're filled, that's it!
Risks and challenges
OUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE:
No one has done this before.
There are other places for writers to learn and grow their skills in other areas of interest. But fighting has long been considered dangerous and the writing of fight scenes has mostly been left to the writer's imagination and what can be gleaned from TV, movies and other books--which are often inaccurate!
Running a big event requires tons of organization and lots of hard work to get big name speakers in--including lots of speaker fees that have to be paid well in advance. We are booking speakers NOW for April 2015 and some for 2016 already!
We need expert presenters: The more people we have sign up for and donate to ACA, the more we will be able to bring in bigger names. We have lots of author and fighting connections, and we're going to bring in some really big bestsellers and top-of-their-game experts, but that takes money and a large audience. If you have connections to people you'd like to see present at ACA, PLEASE TELL US! Just email ACA@AuthorsCombatAcademy.com.
There are lots of moving parts to putting on a conference. We have planned a whole year in advance to give ourselves time to do all the wonderful things we have planned, already there are too many cool things and some of them might have to wait until subsequent years. We are already working on ACA 2016, a big task! We will do our very best to deliver even more than we promise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
