Elephant in the Room is a fun and positive communication tool for couples.
The "elephant in the room" is a common phrase that refers to an obvious truth or issue that is being ignored. Every relationship, no matter how strong encounters these "elephants". Relationship experts agree that the key to a successful relationship is learning how to bring up and discuss these topics.
This tool has made a world of difference in our lives as we came together, got married, and blended our families.
HOW IT ALL STARTED:
Amanda and I met later in life. We both had children from previous relationships and completely opposite careers; however, despite all the contrasts, we fell in love. Unbeknownst to the other, we fell in love on our first date. We both responded to our friends after that first date....."I met the person I am going to marry". This lead to our first "we need to talk" conversation.
I wanted to bring up the conversation, "how soon is too soon to talk about marriage?" Not knowing how to breach that conversation, I bought a stuffed elephant and placed it in her room. It broke the ice in a light hearted way and we were able to talk about the conversation. (We married six weeks later.)
This began what we affectionately call our "Elephant Chats". As you can imagine, blending families creates many "we need to talk" situations. We found that by using the elephant, it broke the ice, let the other know there was something to talk about, allowed the other to have time to settle in before we talked, and it reminded us having these talks were a good thing even though starting them could be tough.
WHAT WE LEARNED:
We learned this was a common problem for many people. We learned there was lots of advice, books, and cds on the best methods to help communication, but not one product. We also learned that the method we were using was inline and supported the advice given on best communication practices:
1. Bring up the topic in a soft way.
2. Give time and space for your partner to respond.
3. Take as much time needed to discuss.
4. Acknowledge the efforts and resolve.
ELEPHANT CHAT CUBE METHOD:
1. Place the cube in a noticeable spot, to remind you to talk.
2. When you want to discuss something simply remove the cover to reveal the elephant.
3. Now that the elephant is in the room and noticeable....wait for your partner to be ready to talk.
4. Take the time to talk and as much time as you need to do so.
5. Once it has been discussed replace the cover to show your communication is solid once again.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE TAKES A LOT OF EFFORT:
This idea was birthed out of love. Our relationship and the start of this project continues to grow stronger with hard work, support and advice from the right people, and a relentless commitment.
To paraphrase a cliche, "Great things take time and effort", this adventure has been no different. It took months of working through design concepts that made sense as a product while supporting the methods and principles of good communication for couples. Although the design of the cube has come a long way from my first and simple approach of putting a stuffed elephant in Amanda's room to let her know I had something to talk about, the principles, philosophy, and intent has stayed the same.
After all the effort to land on a finalized concept, we set out to get an Elephant in the Room into every home. To do this we needed to figure out how to produce the designed product. This included where to get it done along with the 1,000 other things that go along with production, assembly, and logistics.
HOW WE ARE ABLE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN:
We have been blessed with amazing friends, great business partners, and wonderful relationships who have all come together to make this happen. This includes a friend who has over 27 years of experience producing laptops with one of the major manufactures. This relationship, combined with all of our efforts, culminated into a final design that accomplished what we set out to achieve, including overall functionality, look and feel, and production.
WHAT THE FUNDS WILL DO:
We are building 3 injection mold tools. These tools will be made out of Germany steel, produced in China, and then shipped to the USA where we will do the injections, the anodized metal coating, the assembly, and the shipping.
The product requires 3 injection mold tools: the base, the lid, the acrylic clear elephant housing. (The clear housing has tabs so you can let the elephant out.)
1. Base mold tooling design (H13 tool steel) $4,800
2. Cover Mold with logo (H13 tool steel) $4,500
3. Clear case mold (H13 tool steel) $3,820
These costs equal the $13,120 we are looking to raise on Kickstarter.
It is our commitment to cover all costs past the initial tool manufacturing. These costs include: injection mold runs, anodized metal coating, assembly with all accessories including elephants, metal base caps, nano magnets and other miscellaneous parts. Additional efforts will include package design and shipping.

OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU:
We are committed to you and this project. We are incredibly grateful for your contributions. It is for these reasons why we are only looking to raise enough to cover the tool costs. Like all good relationships it is important each partner shares in the efforts to achieve success, and we see that same relationship here.
Again we can not thank you enough for your time, effort, and support. We hope and believe this product will make a difference for you and many others.

Risks and challenges
Like all journeys, you are guaranteed to hit a few bumps along the way. Understanding and acknowledging this fact makes it less of a shock when it does happen, which allows you to respond quickly with clarity.
With that said, it is also important to be diligent in your planning, be preemptive and predictive when possible, and surround yourself with great people. I am confident we have done the same here.
A reason to have confidence we can make this happen:
My 15 years of consulting for major brands, industries, and associations combined with my entrepreneurial spirit has created significant opportunities to be part of many birthed concept successes including our latest tech start-up, Curious Complex - exclusive marketplaces for the obsessed.
During this time, I have been able to be part of and independently lead products and companies from concept to market, including an Equine nutri-aceutical company, 522 Health.
We thank you for your support, your trust, and your faith.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
