Hi! I’m Eleni Violaris, a singer/songwriter from London and I’m very excited to introduce you to my debut album, ‘Rainstriker’.
I began writing ‘Rainstriker’ in collaboration with my brother Adam and father Andonis, whilst we were working on the BBC series, ‘Seven Ages of Britain’, as composers, performers and music producers. Inspiration for the album came from the first episode of the series, which featured the ancient world of the Anglo-Saxons during the turbulent times of the Viking invasions in the eighth and tenth centuries.
We’ve spent the past couple of years developing the album in between other professional commitments. Working with my brother and father has been an enriching and enjoyable experience, especially as both are such talented composers, songwriters and musicians. The album expands on the vibe we originally created for the BBC series, which included ethnic elements and authentic Anglo-Saxon lyrics. We have so far recorded eleven of the fourteen planned songs, where we’ve explored modal scales and sound textures featuring period instruments, such as the bodhrán, celtic flute and harp. Adam’s emotive and evocative musical arrangements are engaging and immersive, as well as having a contemporary, romantic 'film-score' feel.
The songs on ‘Rainstriker’ are a dramatic musical evocation of a bygone mythical age, which focus on Celtic, Brythonic and Norse Gods and Goddesses of the earth, moon, sea and sky and of rain, wind and fire, as well as ancient pagan worship and magic. Sagas of marauding Vikings and mythical heroes are retold in music and song, including the epic story of ‘Beowulf and Grendel’. Immortal love stories permeate the song cycle, as do tales of mythical dragons, trolls and elves. The song, ‘Shining Summer’, tells the epic story of ‘The Ruler of Nine’, the legend of nine magic rings that was also the inspiration for Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and Wagner’s opera, ‘Das Rheingold’, from his famous ‘Ring Cycle’. A particularly striking feature of ‘Rainstriker’, is the unique fusion of English and Anglo-Saxon lyrics, which helps drive the narrative. One particular track, ‘Morwetha’s Spinning Song’, is an exuberant antiphonal work sung entirely in Anglo-Saxon. I produced the album artwork myself and have enjoyed creating a visual identity that helps evoke a world of magic and fantasy. Development of the artwork included a photo-shoot in costume at a London studio and on location.
We took our prospective album to a number of major record companies, who expressed interest in releasing it. However, when it came to contractual negotiations, we found that the current trends in cutting budgets for advances, studio recording and promo video's, meant we would not be able to realise the ambitious scale of our project. Proceeding with a major label would also have meant relinquishing significant artistic control - a sacrifice we did not want to make!
I'm hoping that the album, backed through the Kickstarter platform, will not only give us the kind of artistic control we are seeking but will also allow us to connect with a new kind of audience - one that's more closely involved in the creative process and journey, which is very exciting!
In producing and releasing the album, certain costs need to be considered. The Kickstarter raised funds will go toward:
Funds will also go toward producing and fulfilling all rewards, with a small percentage going to cover the Kickstarter and payment processing fees.
Kickstarter also operates on an 'all or nothing' basis. This means that if we fail to meet our target goal, no money will exchange hands. As such, we'll receive none of the funds and the album would remain unfinished and unreleased. In order to help circumvent this, please spread the word through Facebook, Twitter and in any other way possible! Your support is greatly appreciated! :)
In return for your financial help and support, there are many exciting rewards on offer, including limited edition, backer only copies of the finished album; the opportunity to take part in the recording of two of the songs at a top London Studio; the opportunity to appear in the promotional video and much more...!
Remember, as a Kickstarter backer, you're guaranteed to receive the album before general public release! Get it before anyone else & with the added knowledge that YOU helped make it happen!
Should the project exceed its funding goal, we'll be able to complete and release the album on an even larger scale! For example, record with more instruments and musicians, create further promo video's and engage in additional marketing and promotional activities.
I'm so excited to be able to share 'Rainstriker' with the amazing Kickstarter community!
I hope you've enjoyed watching my presentation video, in which I have endeavoured to impart the ambitious scale of the project.
Thank you very much for your time and I hope you'll consider becoming a backer!
I look forward to meeting you soon,
- Eleni :)

Risks and challenges
My creative team and I will work quickly to meet all the challenges of completing and delivering the album on time. Unexpected production delays and surprises can sometimes occur - in such an event we will work hard to resolve all issues and ensure that Kickstarter backers are kept fully informed and up to date.
Whilst 'Rainstriker' is the first personal album I've recorded for release, my professional work during the past couple of years has included assisting
other recording artists bring their albums and music catalogues successfully to market. This has involved designing album artwork for both digital and physical releases, preparing and overseeing the releases for distribution and marketing and promoting the albums online. In addition, my experience includes recording lead vocals for numerous TV composers and singing backing vocals for a number of well-known international recording artists.
I have a great production team behind me to help meet all the deadlines for the project. The general public release for ‘Rainstriker’ is scheduled for the 17th of June 2013, which will coincide with the week of the ‘Summer Solstice’ and the festival at Stonehenge. This is significant from a media and marketing perspective, as the iconic, ancient ‘circle of stones’ on Salisbury Plain, feature in two of the songs from 'Rainstriker'.
