About this project
Electric Car Insider's 2015 EV Buyers Guide
Electric Car Insider's 2015 EV Buyers Guide is a complete guide for prospective buyers and drivers of plug-in electric vehicles. The purpose of the guide is to educate consumers about electric vehicles and how they improve the environment, strengthen domestic energy security and provide personal savings. The guide will be distributed throughout the US on newsstands, mail subscriptions and through EV clubs.
Electric Car Insider is the only magazine focused exclusively on consumer education about electric vehicles and available for sale to the public on the newsstand. The 2015 EV Buyers Guide will provide information about every EV available for sale in the US, reviews and tutorials about residential and public charging systems, solar car charging, utility programs, smart phone apps and the rationale for driving electric.
The Electric Car Insider's 2015 EV Buyers Guide will be produced by Electric Car Insider magazine.
Electric Car Insider magazine is published by a small group of long-time EV drivers and enthusiasts whose mission is the creation of a cleaner, sustainable, energy secure future. The first edition was created in 2009 with those goals in mind.
We have driven EVs from Seattle to San Diego and back and have participated in events throughout the US in support of the EV community. Our team is dedicated to making a difference and doing our part to change the world, one zero emission mile at a time.
The publisher and producers of Electric Car Insider magazine also organize Electric Car Guest Drive events all over the U.S. The 2015 EV Buyers Guide will be a key component of the education mission of future Electric Car Guest Drive events.
Why is it important
Electric Car Insider is more than just a car magazine. It is an introduction to and a resource for a more sustainable, secure existence. We are working to promote a future where all vehicles are zero emission electric vehicles. With the further adoption of EVs we will see cleaner air, a break from our dependency on oil and lower costs of automobile ownership. Most importantly we will see a brighter future for our children and successive generations.
We believe that a significant contribution to solving our air quality and energy security problems can be made by individuals making the decision to drive electric. Because electric cars are also substantially cheaper to operate – electric fuel costs the equivalent of $1 per gallon or less – drivers have a substantial financial incentive to purchase and drive these zero emission vehicles.
There is a lack of awareness and knowledge among the general public about electric cars. Although some people know EVs exist, most people know very little about the benefits, new low costs and how easy they are to use. Electric Car Insider's 2015 EV Buyer's Guide is designed to be a complete guide for prospective buyers and drivers of plug-in electric vehicles. In the guide, we showcase the many benefits of driving electric. Zero emission vehicles reduce the greenhouse gases and other pollutants that damage our environment. By driving an EV you are no longer indirectly buying foreign oil that has led to many armed conflicts in modern history. EVs can use domestically sourced, renewable energy. EC drivers can accomplish all of this and also save money. Driving an electric car is like paying $1 a gallon for fuel. Maintenance costs are much lower with electric cars. There are no oil changes, no tune-ups, no belts or filters to replace.
How will the Kickstarter funds be used?
With your pledge Electric Car Insider will create and distribute a high quality full color 2015 EV Buyers Guide in print and digital versions.
The 2015 Electric Car Insider EV Buyers Guide is the most comprehensive guide to buying and driving electric cars available. It explains everything you need to know about EVs and how to save a bundle of money. The guide is intended to inform someone who is interested in buying an electric car what cars are available, all about charging systems, information about special utility rate programs that can save you a hundred dollars a month or more, how to use public charging networks and how to get $2,500 in rebates and $7,500 in tax credits.
With your help the 2015 Electric Car Insider EV buyers guide will reach a very large audience. We will distribute the EV Buyers guide on retail newsstands all over the US. By creating eye-level retail visibility of EVs, we will create greater awareness and education about the environmental and energy security benefits of electric vehicles.
Risks and challenges
Every project has its risks but ours are unique compared to most. Here's a list of challenges that could throw us off course.
- Big Oil Cartel
- Hydrogen Fuel Cell Greenwashers
- Rolling Coal Delinquents
There's a lot that can get in the way of the success of the magazine and we hope we can avoid any interference from these groups. If we can get past these hurdles there are other challenges that could put the project at risk.
Apathy. Our audience is too busy watching the Simpsons reruns to consider the looming climate change crisis and their responsibility and capability to do something about it.
Printer production delay. Although we've worked out all of the kinks of production over the past few years, there is always a risk that we don't receive the the magazines from the printer in time. This risk is very low, our printer is awesome, and deliveries have always been on time in the past.
Our distributor goes out of business. This risk is low. Our distributor is Ingram Periodicals, the largest and most successful distributor of magazines in the world. But distributors have gone bankrupt in the past, and it's not impossible that it could happen again. We have a direct sales force, and multiple delivery channels including direct mail and EV clubs.
The postal service goes out of business. This risk is low. The postal service is "too big to fail" and would be bailed out by the US Government. But it could happen. We would consolidate our four quarterly issues to a single book and use Fedex for delivery.
We become unable to perform. Unless we become physically or mentally impaired, this is extraordinarily unlikely. This project is what gets us out of bed every day, ready to "fight the good fight" and do our part to mitigate air pollution and climate change. There is nothing else we'd rather do, or we'd be doing it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Digital copies are available and subscribers can access the copies at no additional charge. The purpose of this Kickstarter is to increase the distribution channel for the print product, which is available to consumer at eye level retail. The magazine is a tangible physical good that people can hand to family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors to spread the word about electric vehicles.
It's a grey Model S 85 with black leather, air suspension, tech package, premium stereo.
Question on 'Drive our Tesla Model S for a day': Please define a day (24 hours or pick up 10:00 am back by 8:00 pm).
A day is 24 hours in my world. The car is based in San Diego. Depending on the amount of pledge, it could be delivered and picked up in nearby cities. If a full week, it could be delivered in a radius of roughly 500 miles from San Diego.
We have all sizes of shirts for both men and women. Kickstarter enables a survey system to get exact details for each after the funding is successful.
We'll be emailing everyone to confirm we've got their pledge and fulfillment details correct.
Yes. We support clubs all over North America (and anywhere else we can find them). Just send me a message here on KS and let me know how many you need. Overseas shipping is much lower for a group buy.
The magazine is produced quarterly; there are four issues in a one year subscription. Backers will get their first issue in December, within a week of the Kickstarter campaign close. The next issue will be mailed the first week in February.
There are at least 64 pages in each issue. Typical topics are new electric car reviews, home and public charging systems, special utility rates for EVs and mobile apps.
The magazine will be of interest to new EV buyers, and EV drivers who want to get the best experience out of driving electric. We always have a lot of information about how to save money by buying and driving electric.
