Amula | Personalized DNA Jewellery
A modern twist on the traditional locket.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sat, November 2 2019 3:59 AM UTC +00:00.
Amula is a collection of modern lockets personalized with DNA from a person, pet or plant.
Amula is similar in sentiment and function to a traditional locket containing a photo or lock of hair – worn as a reminder of a moment or some one that means a lot to you.
Wear you. Gift yourself to a beloved one. Wear your lover. Wear you and your beloved together. Wear you and your fur-baby best friend. The connections are yours to customize.
DNA is the story of US; all of us, and every living thing; from the material of our physical existence and that of everything around us, to the immaterial stuff of our dreams, memories and time. DNA is a powerful material and metaphor. DNA is science and culture.
Your DNA is unique to you, but it also ties you to all life on Earth. Wearing your own DNA or that of a loved one, as a capsule that you can carry with you every day, is a constant reminder of how unique and interconnected we all are.
Amula DNA Jewellery is a way for you to celebrate life's most memorable moments and greatest loves through the story of DNA.
The process is easy: Select a Style. Receive a DNA Kit. Return the Kit. Receive your AMULA DNA Necklace.
DNA samples are taken from the inside of the cheeks using a small plastic brush and processed by us at GENSPACE (Brooklyn, New York).
- Select from Tier Levels < 1, 2 and 3 > according to when you would like to receive the DNA Kit for your AMULA DNA Necklace. HOLIDAY delivery will arrive in December, and VALENTINES deliveries will arrive the beginning of February 2020.
- There are three Styles < A, B and C > available for each of the three Tiers; (A) AEON-SQ which stands for "AEON Square", (B) OVAO, pronounced "oh-vow", (C) AEON-O.
- Necklace materials: stainless steel, glass, silicone, water, glycerol
- More information about design and processing in the FAQ
Backers will receive a survey after the campaign closes to confirm order details and purchase additional personalization options (such as necklace style and number of DNA samples in one necklace).
Amula DNA Necklaces come in a gift box that unravels to reveal a display frame on the right that holds the necklace, and on the left, a magnetic photo frame where you can feature a portrait or landscape format photo. Photo dimensions = 2.4 inches x 3.4 inches, visible photo dimensions = 2 inches x 3 inches.
If you’re in the New York City area, you can try all 3 styles of AMULA on at:
The EVOLUTION STORE > 687 Broadway, Sunday to Saturday 11am-8pm
NEW MUSEUM STORE > 235 Bowery, Wednesday to Sunday 11am-6pm
GENSPACE is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting science literacy through citizen access to biotechnology. They provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) educational outreach, cultural events, and a platform for science innovation at the grassroots level. “The best way to inform 21st century dialogue about science is to have stakeholders understand it from a hands-on perspective.”
DNA is often described as ‘the code’, ‘a map’, ‘the building blocks’ or ‘the essence of life’. It contains truths about the origins and interconnectedness of people, animals and plants – and it is shaping the future, from health to biodiversity. DNA has become a common metaphor used to denote concepts such as the unique and unchangeable traits that program a creature, person or idea.
In a time of increasing fragmentation, the story of DNA is a reminder of our uniqueness while celebrating the common thread we all share.
DNA is important because understanding it gives us a greater appreciation for our role and significance here on Earth and in the cosmos. The atoms in our bodies (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and other heavy elements) were all created in previous generations of stars over 4.5 billion years ago. We are indeed “all made of star stuff” and are connected to this ancient, genetic history, even as our short time on Earth has brought about many profound changes.

Amula has evolved as a part of my art and design practice for a long time, but always been made in small or limited editions. I'd like to bring Amula and the wonder of DNA to a larger audience.
I think that DNA is a powerful idea and that ideas can only become better with the input of more and different voices. This campaign has the potential to visually spread the awareness of what lies at the heart of life on Earth in a highly personal and immediately identifiable form.
I see Kickstarter as a space where the DNA conversation could reach a larger audience through AMULA as a catalyst between the science of DNA experienced through personal stories told through the enjoyment of design.
Every personal moment is a part of the story of all life on Earth, cast in the cells of all living things.
LIKE. FOLLOW. SHARE. SPREAD THE WORD to your friends, family and communities. THANK-YOU!
Have a question, comment or idea? We would love to hear from you!
We’re always looking for interesting stories; in particular, stories about people working creatively and/or critically with DNA as a material and idea – this could be in health, policy or art, among researchers, doulas, animal trainers or astrophysicists.
Pledging any amount to this campaign means that we’ve added you to our Community List. We will be in touch when the campaign has closed about how often you’d like to hear from us and what about.

We have experience taking an idea from concept, through the prototyping phase to manufacturing and delivering internationally. Our suppliers are located all over the world, so we understand how local customs, politics and culture can affect production and delivery timelines. However, despite the experience and personal care, sometimes mistakes happen (every one is human), or situations arise that are out of our hands (like a supplier suddenly faces staff shortage or a shipment gets stuck at customs).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
