So you made it through the video ...
My goal with the video is not to make any of this raunchy, as much as it is to begin highlighting how beautiful machining is when done well. How beautiful mechanical shaping of awesome materials to exact tolerances can be. My plan is to illustrate just that throughout the process with better and more detailed videos and images than ever before, as well as send out some of the most beautifully crafted pens you have ever seen.
Why the Mover & Shaker?
The Tactile Turn Mover & Shaker are custom machined click pens made from the highest quality materials available and offers some beautiful finishes.
These pens were made for the person that wants a premium pen with no fuss. My previous designs with magnets were certainly unique, but when I am on the go I wanted something that was just a click away from writing. I wanted to continue the same design philosophy by keeping simple solutions done well.
- Custom lay pattern for grip to ensure comfortable writing position
- Body made from 7075 Aluminum
- Clip made from 301 Spring Steel
- Click mechanism that won't annoy the hell out of your friends and coworkers (it is nearly silent)
- More of the back section is drilled out to make balance spot on.
The Mover Specs:
- 5.55" Long, 0.46" in diameter at its widest
- 1.1 oz (32 grams)
- Comes with the Pilot G2 (0.38mm, black ink) refill
- Click here for a list of refills that fit in the Mover
The Shaker Specs:
- 5.05" Long, 0.46" in diameter at its widest
- 1.1 oz (30 grams)
- Comes with the Schmidt Easy Flow 9000 (medium point, black ink) refill
- Click here for a list of refills that fit the Shaker
Dark Blue is on the list now after people voted in Update #4! Your opinion counts and I'll have images of the dark blue as soon as possible!
Post Kickstarter Pricing
These pens are a great deal right now as a thank you for helping me get them off the ground. After Kickstarter they will be $65 plus shipping (and tax here in Texas), so get in on this great pricing while you can!
Why did you change your company name to Tactile Turn?
I love the EiMIM name, but when my own mother can't remember the name, something is wrong. Tactile Turn perfectly illustrates where I am going.
My dedication to making objects that feel great in the hand is essential. Have you noticed that there are lots of items out there that look cool in pictures and from afar, but when you get close and pick them up they lose all of their appeal? I don't make those things.
My shop is a turning house more than it is a machine shop. I run lathes to make turned objects.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The neat thing about this project is that all of this has been thoroughly tested. I do as much of the work in my own shop as possible, and try to farm out as little as possible to other local shops so I can oversee the process. The production methods to make the prototypes are the same as are going to be used on the final production run, just scaled up. I do plan on changing the method of how the clips are cut to make a smoother finish on the edges, but I do have a backup method in case that doesn't go as smoothly as I have been told it will.
Be sure to check the updates on this project periodically because if there is one thing that makes a Kickstarter project worthwhile, in my opinion, it is that the creator is transparent. I love letting my backers know where I am in the process and sharing in the triumphs as well as the difficulties if and when they happen.
I want to ensure this design makes it beyond just being sold on Kickstarter. I have been in talks with many retailers and businesses about carrying my products, and to do that effectively I need to make large runs. I also know that this has the capability to do really well, and when I price something for making 100 they will cost more than making 1000. If the project does significantly better than the goal I can add in value in other ways to ensure that everyone is getting what they pay for.
Now that I have been doing this a while, I have figured out packaging and shipping options that are both economical and fast. So I pass those savings on to you as a way of saying thank you!
