"Decrypting Rita is that rarest and most refreshing of things; a science–fiction story that feels like it comes from the future. It's marvelous, in the true sense of the word!" - Phil Foglio (Girl Genius)
Coming here after the campaign is over? You can still pre-order a copy of book 2 (and even get a discounted copy of 1 along with it) here. You can't be a sponsor anywhere else though!

I'm raising funds to produce the second collected volume of my science fiction comic "Decrypting Rita". Like the first, it'll be about 120 pages, softcover, full color with some really cool spot gloss effects here and there. It's all drawn; now it's time to find out how big my print run should be!
The fastest woman ever built has been dragged outside of reality by her ex-boyfriend. She's trying to decide just which parallel timeline is the real one.
Although if she can't stop her enemies, that may not matter any more.
For all she knows, they might have already won and are just playing with her. Hive minds are… strange.
Different worlds sprawl across the pages, merging and twisting in a way only possible in comics. In the first book, I laid down the rules of how these parallel timelines work; in this one, I get to start playing with them.
Like the first volume, there will be spot gloss here and there throughout the whole book. Highlights and extra imagery will be revealed as light plays across the page. Those magic sigils in the page above, for instance, will be gloss instead of black; this gives the book a wonderfully ethereal feel that the screen just can't duplicate.
You can read the whole comic for free online at http://egypt.urnash.com/rita/. If you like what you see, then hit that pledge button and help support feminist SF comics!
Everybody who pledges $7 or more gets a DRM-free PDF of both book 1 and book 2. This is the middle volume; selling it by itself would just be cruel.
If you pledge $25 or more, you get a copy of the book. It's a digest-sized softcover, full color throughout, with the story enhanced here and there by spot gloss - there's things on some pages you can only see when the light hits it just right. Now that comics are easily available online, I'm a strong believer in making the physical copy a really cool object that can't be completely reproduced on the screen!
Are you new to the story? For $45, you can get book 1 at a special price along with your copy of book 2! This is limited to what I have on hand… unless something special happens.
For $50 or more, you'll get a t-shirt along with a signed copy of the book. Exactly how cool the t-shirt is depends on how many people order it - this tier has its own stretch goals. For now it'll be a single color, but if fifty or more people ask for one, it'll be in two colors. More will make it full color!
Do you want to declare your newfound love of this comic to the world? For $70, you can get signed copies of books 1 and 2, the PDFs, and the t-shirt!
For $100 or more, you can get an original drawing on the inside back cover, and your name listed in the book as a sponsor!
For $150 or more, you can be listed as a sponsor, with a picture of you in the style of the comic above your name. You'll also get digital copies of the image, in sizes suitable for use as Internet avatars.
For $300, you can be part of the story! You get to tell me what name and pronoun should replace the glitched-out text on this page. Plus you'll get a larger image above your name on the sponsor list, with a healthy margin around it. (The name is subject to my approval, Rita will not have a friend named LOLBUTTS69.)
And finally, for $500, you and a guest can have dinner with the Guest of Honor at Rainfurrest 2014. Which is to say "dinner with me in Seattle near the end of September". I'll pay for dinner but travel and con membership are up to you; if you won't be attending Rainfurrest but still want this, contact me and we'll talk about other options.
At $9000, the book won't just have spot gloss throughout the text; it'll also have spot gloss on the cover! As with the main text, the spot gloss will carry extra information that you can miss on the first glance.
At $13000, I'll reprint book 1. That pesky limitation on sets of books 1 and 2 will be gone!
Somewhere before $20000, something wonderful will happen.
And somewhere beyond that… well. You'll find out if we make it that far!
If you've read this far, you're probably at least interested enough to go have a good look at the comic. It's all online for free; read as much as you like.

Risks and challenges
This is my second time printing and shipping a book myself. The first time (for book 1 of Rita) went pretty well, with everyone's books delivered a mere month or three past the original date. I've severely restricted the main offender in delays - drawing stuff in people's copies of the books - and kept a ton of notes and on the things I had to learn about prepress, so that should help things go a lot faster.
This will be my first book printed in China, so there's new risks there. That's going to be handled by Global PSD, who has a lot of experience doing graphic novels and art books. There's also risks involved in transoceanic shipping, but that's what insurance is for!
The book is about three pages away from being finished as I write this. I've got to draw them, then it's mostly a matter of running some macros to get the whole thing together in InDesign and off to the printer. A month later I'll have books, and begin shipping.
If there are any unanticipated costs, I have other sources of funds to cover them. I'm not significantly altering things from book 1, which is well in the black, so I don't think anything is likely to happen.
Finally, I'm just one woman; if a meteor comes out of the sky and crushes me in the next few months, you're probably not getting your book. I'm hoping this doesn't happen; my computer's backed up in the cloud but I'm not!

Yes! Add $15 or more to your pledge, and I'll make sure to have a field asking if you want book 2 in the fulfillment survey. It will be signed and drawn in, as well.
