Heading into the final stretch
Our campaign is now heading into the final days and we are so thrilled to have seen such support from everyone.
Randy has been hard at work on pages (1-6 done right now, plus a cover) and we'll be sharing all of those updates in the coming weeks.
We just hit our second stretch goal, which means an exclusive cover will be made available to our Kickstarter backers.
Thank you for everything you've done to support us.
In the beginning...
A never-before-seen plague has swept through Europe, killing as much as half of the population across the continent. Before clean-up of all the dead could be completed, a second catastrophe struck: The bodies of plague victims began reanimating.
These reanimated corpses had a seemingly endless hunger for the flesh of the living. The "rotters," as the common people and the press nicknamed them, multiplied rapidly, infecting anyone scratched or bitten by one. Populations across Europe were further ravaged within weeks.
Pockets of survivors have holed up in fortified places all over the continent, like castles and prisons, and hold out hope for an end to the blight. Those who were brave enough to travel and lucky enough to survive headed for England. The island nation is filled with people from every corner of the continent.
The English government, its resources stretched to exhaustion, has a plan to expand its territory onto the European mainland. In order to do so, it has sought to learn about the rotters, their habits and the most effective ways to kill them.
Charged with this task are independent contractors, known as Hunters, who scout and kill rotters, and work directly with the Crown's Research and Development Corps to study them. These hunters are also the lifeline for smaller survivor groups, bringing them hope, messages and sometimes much-needed supplies. Others have been known to assist survivors in making the perilous trek to English shores.
CAZADORA is one such Hunter.
How she came to be
CAZADORA is a 24-page comic for mature readers (violence, adult content and adult language) that came to life when artist Randy Kintz was busy sketching in early 2013. An idea popped into his head, his pencil hit the paper and a zombie huntress was born.
After some discussion with collaborator and writer Sam Eggleston, CAZADORA was fleshed out, named and her world started to become a reality.
Kintz, who is better known as Rantz to all of his fans, and Eggleston present to you a story set in steampunk Victorian-era Europe, featuring a hero unlike any who has graced the pages of a comic before. She's intelligent, she's beautiful and she's determined, and she would make a great addition to anyone's comic collection.
Why we've turned to Kickstarter
Let's be honest here: Making a comic isn't easy, and it sure isn't cheap to bring it to life in the form of a printed book. Knowing how supportive the comic community can be on a crowd-funding site such as this, Rantz and Eggleston made the decision to turn to the legion of comic fans out there and ask for a little help in making their dream come true.
You have lots of choices when it comes to choosing a comic to back, but we're hoping to be able to pique your interest with a solid story, quality art and a compelling protagonist.
But why are you asking for the amount you're asking for?
Truth be told, neither Rantz nor Eggleston began this journey looking for a payout, and anyone in the know about the cost of creating comics can tell you that there is no room for profit being built into what we're asking for. The $3,000 will be used to cover the cost of having the cover and interior colored, having the lettering completed and having the book printed. Additionally, the costs associated with Kickstarter and Amazon payments have been built in, as well as the creation and shipping of the rewards.
Do you have any stretch goals?
For our first stretch, which will be $4,500, we're going to use the extra money to get some extra copies for Cazadora printed so Randy Kintz and Sam Eggleston can take them to conventions and try to spread the Cazadora love. For our backers, we're going to add a Rantz-created, color postcard to everyone who is already getting a shipment from us. PDF backers will get an electronic version of the postcard as well that they can use as a computer desktop background, if they like.
Our second stretch goal will be $5,500, and at that level we will be doing a Kickstarter-exclusive cover that will only be made available to our backers and the creators. This cover will be done by Randy Kintz and we have a very special colorist in mind for it, who we will announce once we have a chat with them.
If we reach that $5,500 stretch goal, we'll also be adding a reward level at $500 that includes the original exclusive cover artwork, an original interior page, all of the prints, a t-shirt, the sketchbook and a copy of the comic. It will be truly a one-of-a-kind Cazadora fan package.
We're well aware that everyone loves rewards, which is why we have a real nice variety for everyone. In addition to the comic, you can get the rewards that are seen here, and more!
Who doesn't love a great commission to add to their collection or hang up on the wall? We have quite a few artists who contributed art to the Cazadora project in one way, shape or form and many of them have offered up their commission services as rewards, too!
There are some cool shirts out there, but it seems like everyone is always wearing the same thing anymore. So why not stand out from the crowd and wear your very own Cazadora shirt? Pique the interest of your fellow clothes-wearing people! Start some conversations about how great Kickstarter is. Heck, it could give you a chance to talk about your new favorite comic character, too!
This sketchbook will be available as a Kickstarter exclusive only, and will feature artwork ranging from the original sketches by Randy Kintz all the way to finished and colored pin-up art from artists like Jay De Foy, Brian Lopez-Santos, Adriana Tavares, Richard Johnson, Elton Thomasi and Jordan Johnson.
There is no doubt that a section of the comic fan base is also a fan of prints featuring their favorite characters. We're fortunate enough to have several friends in the industry who were happy to help out in providing some outstanding prints for you to choose from. What's more is that some of the original art for these prints is also available as Kickstarter rewards! (Please note: Some of these are still awaiting color, and those finished pieces will be revealed in future updates).
There are various sketch covers available in the reward levels. Here are the images of the covers.More will be added throughout the run of the fundraiser.
Looking for something that is one-of-a-kind for your collection? Well, how about you grab one of the Cazadora pages? Or perhaps an original of one of the prints?
Pages are drawn and inked by Randy Kintz, and the original artwork for the prints is done by its respective artists.
Interested in adding more than one copy of Cazadora? No problem. Each additional copy is $10, which includes the additional shipping costs as well. If we reach our $5,500 stretch goal, the Kickstarter-exclusive cover will be made available to everyone, but additional copies of it or a purchase of the original cover will just be $10 extra, too. You'll have your choice of covers when we send the final surveys out.
You can also add a print of your choice to any level for just $20 (including shipping). If you want to add additional prints to any of the tiers that already include a print, it's just $10 extra for each one.
To add on a sketch book (regular edition, not the numbered edition), please add $35. This comes with a quick headsketch by Rantz on the inside.
Everyone who has a package coming will be getting one free postcard as a way of us saying thanks for helping us reach our stretch goal. You can add $5 to get both postcards though, if you'd like.
When it comes to creating comics, writers have the luxury of working through multiple projects at once as long as they are part of multiple creative teams. That's the situation with CAZADORA. Writer Sam Eggleston currently has a completely different creative team and a completely different Kickstarter, too, with a comic called LAST BREATH. That comic's Kickstarter was successful (THANK YOU!) and is currently being drawn, inked and then colored and lettered before going to print in December/January with all rewards being fulfilled ON TIME in February. Commissions have been coming in, the shirts are ordered and the bumper stickers are on the way. All but one of the custom sketch covers are done and it looks like all will be finished on time.
So why are we telling you this? We wanted to let you know that Sam Eggleston isn't jumping ship from one project to another. He's simply going to be running the CAZADORA Kickstarter while waiting for the completion of the other comic. Since the two will overlap well, it makes for an easy, continual work flow for him because he's working with two different teams to make it happen. Of course, if you have any questions or concerns, you just have to ask and he will be happy to answer them for you.
Risks and challenges
With any project, there are challenges and risks. Right now our biggest challenge is putting up enough money for the colorist and letterer. Since Randy Kintz and Sam Eggleston already did most of their portion of the comic, the majority of it is done and ready to go. Now it's just the final touches.
We don't foresee any delays on getting the comic out on time, but that's always something that looms in the air. We believe we've built in plenty of room for deadlines, however, and that the entire process should go off without too much of a hitch.
If any setbacks arise, we'll be open and honest about the delays and stay in communication with our backers via Kickstarter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
