About

Who is at aimed at?

News junkies. If you are a news junkie, this site is for you.

Why are we creating this site?

We want to 1) save people time, 2) make them better informed, and 3) make the world a better place.

Our Vision

People make important decisions that affect themselves, their families, and their broader society -- their community, their state, their country. These decisions include who to vote for (or to vote at all), which politicians or organizations to give money to, where to volunteer, and so on.

We want to help people make these decisions in a more effective, informed way. One way to do this is to help people recognize that range of perspectives out there and what kind of point of view their preferred sources of information have. Ultimately, this would lead to better decisions and greater civility within society.

Our Site (or, what is a bubble?)

In today's world, folks talk about living in a bubble. In other words, we tend to get information only from sources that reflect our own point of view. And even when we get our information from sources outside that “bubble,” we often interpret in self-reinforcing way. We so easily say to ourselves – “my information is accurate and unbiased, but their news is horribly skewed.”

These bubbles exist on the left and on the right. The walls of the bubble we live in get thicker as we read content that reinforces our existing ideas and beliefs. We hope this site helps reduce the thickness of the walls and, actually pierce the bubble. We believe that living outside bubbles will lead to a more civil society.

Think about it – you and your crazy uncle don’t agree on anything but we think you can both agree on this site. It does the analysis for you. At a glance, you both will see what your typical sites are covering and what they aren’t covering. Then the site will take you directly to the articles you want to read.

You may know that CNN and Fox News cover stories differently but did you know what they cover is different? For example, the news on the left is more likely to cover school shootings while the right is more likely to cover police shootings.

How do we accomplish this?

Through the website, Piercing the Bubble, we will show who’s covering the big stories of the day, and whether that coverage is more likely to come from sources on the left or the right. In other words, we’ll show people the broad spectrum of coverage and if stories are covered similarly across that spectrum, or whether it is much more intense on one side or other.

In addition, by showing the partisan slant of people’s favorite news sources, we’ll help people better understand the how skewed (or not) the information they’re getting is. They’ll be able to see where their most common sources of information fit within that broad partisan spectrum. Are they getting the unbiased information they think they are?

Of course, you can also look to see how slanted or not those stories are that your crazy uncle keeps quoting during Thanksgiving dinner, and be prepared to argue back more effectively.

Our site turns the news feeds into a graphic so the viewer can easily see who is covering what.

Then you can click on any news story to see the original content

What’s the value to the viewer?

Our goal is a more informed populace to help them make better decisions about public policy issues, including who to vote for, what to support with their money, and what to do with their time.

We believe in evidence-based decision making. If you can understand the facts around an issue, the evidence to support one course of action over another, you can make better decisions. And if more and more people make decisions using evidence, facts, and an understanding of the context of the issue, the better our society will be.

How would this actually work?

There are a number of independent sites that rate the partisanship of media sources. For example, see ad fontes media’s ratings.

We will rely on independent ratings to determine a partisanship score for each news source – how liberal, conservative, or neutral they are. Then, by pulling in stories in the current important topics of the day, we’ll be able to show who is covering what.

Why should we trust you?

Are we biased too? Of course! Everyone has biases and we’re no exception. We are trying to be “biased” in favor of evidence and facts.

For much of our careers, our jobs have been to gather data and information to help our employers make the best decisions possible, regardless of our personal feelings about that decision.

In addition, we believe in transparency. There’s no secret formula, hidden from view, that creates the end result. Underneath the pretty pictures and charts, you’ll be able to see what the source of the ratings for each news source are and how the rating of their partisanship was determined. And, of course, you’ll be able to see all the news stories, collected by topic, and judge for yourself.

Road Map

Phase 1: Develop prototype – COMPLETED

Phase 2: Raise money – In process

Phase 3: Launch site

We need $60,000 to build our site, create an automated process to categorize news feed, and raise awareness.

If we are lucky enough to raise more than our initial ask, our next stages would include:

The ability for users to rate the articles, comment, and engage in conversations with our larger community.

Providing expert analysis (from across the partisan spectrum) and commentary on the site.

Using AI/Machine Learning to code individual articles for sentiment and partisanship.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk is that we build and launch the site and no one comes :(
