About

The Exponential Festival is embarking on its fifth year as the only month-long January theatre festival dedicated to emerging New York City-based artists working in experimental performance.

Since 2016, we have provided over 100 productions with the following resources:

  • A box-office split

  • Free press representation

  • Access to a network of skilled professionals

And in 2019, we added:

  • Insurance

  • Videography

  • MFTA membership

  • Technicians

  • Venue managers

...and more. All. For. Free.

We are committed to an eccentrically large community of creative minds and bodies. We know visionary art comes in all shapes, sizes, packages, duos, trios, and collectives. So our festival is called, nay compelled!, to ferret out earthshaking performers so we may put a good ole flashing neon sign saying “Step right up, folks!” at their front door. Announcing: here is the weird in all its glory, including the ever wonderful hue of the not-so-weird yet perfectly wonderful instead. To summarize—we will blow your socks off. But above all, Exponential offers its artists an opportunity to take root; to grow long-lasting relationships and make New York City a viable artistic home.

For our fifth season, we will revisit our first commitment: the box-office split. We want to make a radical intervention in the way new work gets made in New York City. We want to offer the artists in our home venue, Vital Joint, not just a percentage of the box office, but the whole damn thing. 100%. That’s why we’re increasing our campaign goal from last year to $9,000. We want to continue to offer the services above, pay our small staff, our technicians, and continue our fellowship program, offering a young artist 100 free rehearsal hours, multiple work-in-progress showings, and $1,000.

Exponential 2020 will offer a full month of performing arts programming in January in Brooklyn. Our list of committed venues include:

  • Chez Bushwick

  • Honey's

  • JACK

  • Loading Dock

  • Para\\el

  • Patch Works

  • Target Margin’s The Doxsee Theater

  • The Brick

  • Vital Joint

Confirmed artists for 2020 to be announced in our project updates!

2019 was a success, with 35 productions in 8 venues over 31 days. Last year, TimeOut NY named us alongside HERE's Prototype Festival, American Realness, and The Public Theater's Under The Radar festival as one of the top four January festivals in New York. Our shows were attended by thousands of people and our artists received extensive press coverage. Exponential alumni have gone on to tour their work to Chicago, New England, and our founders now lead theaters of their own in New York. Last year we ran our first major fundraising campaign, were awarded our first grant by the Brooklyn Arts Council, paid our administrative staff, and awarded our first artist fellowship to choreographer Lisa Fagan. We are making it easier for artists to take root and keep making work in New York City. Please join this grassroots movement by contributing to this campaign.

Risks and challenges

In 2016, we presented 9 productions in 5 venues over 19 days. We offered our artists a box-office split and served as their press representatives all on a budget of zero dollars.

In 2019, we presented 35 productions in 8 venues over 31 days. We offered our artists the above resources, plus free videography, technicians, venue managers insurance, MFTA membership, and began a fellowship program. We couldn't have offered all these resources without your support.

With just a fraction of the budget of other festivals, The Exponential Festival is having a broad impact on the performing arts community of New York City. With your help, we can do more.
