About this project
Connect, Cultivate, Thrive
The Edyn smart garden system lets you know what’s happening in your garden at all times. Whether you’re a novice gardener or managing a small-scale organic farm, Edyn is there to take the guesswork out of gardening. Inserted in the soil, the Edyn Garden Sensor gathers and analyzes data about changing weather and soil conditions. The Edyn App displays this data as a real-time snapshot of your garden, and pushes alerts and suggestions to maximize plant health. A separate component, the Edyn Water Valve, uses the data collected by the sensor to smartly control your existing watering system, watering your plants only when needed. With advanced tracking technology and intuitive design, the Edyn smart garden system keeps you connected to your garden or farm so you can grow healthier plants.
What to Grow
No two gardens are alike, so what you decide to plant should depend on specific data about your garden. The Edyn Garden Sensor tracks light, humidity, temperature, soil nutrition and moisture, and then cross-references this information with plant, soil science and weather databases to recommend which plants will thrive. Check the Edyn app to see the plants that will grow best, the optimal time for planting and even plant groupings with the same conditional needs.
How to Grow
You can’t always be there worrying about frost or waiting for the peak moment to harvest your Heirloom tomatoes. That’s why we designed Edyn to continually monitor conditions and alert you to changes that require immediate action. Expect a ping from Edyn detailing moisture levels, suggesting what type of organic fertilizer to use, and helping you find the optimal sunlight for every plant in your garden.
Let there be water - exactly when your plants need it and precisely the right amount. Unlike pre-set sprinklers, the Edyn Water Valve automatically controls your existing water system based on data collected by the Garden Sensor, and adapts to every change in the weather forecast. You’ll save water, lower your utility bills and never worry about thirsty plants again. You can also use the Edyn app to manually control the Water Valve, allowing you to water your plants from anywhere.
From Rooftop Gardens to Organic Farms
Edyn is for all gardeners and small farmers, beginners to professionals, in cities or countryside. If you’re a novice gardener, we’ll help you discover what you can grow and how to make your garden beautiful in every season. If you’re already a master, Edyn deepens your understanding about what’s happening beneath the surface, like minute changes in soil nutrition, so you can anticipate and resolve problems before it’s too late. No matter how much experience you may have, you can rest easy knowing that Edyn is always monitoring your garden or small farm.
The science behind Edyn
To test the soil in your garden, Edyn passes a harmless electrical signal through it and measures how that signal is altered or attenuated by water and soil additives, such as organic fertilizer, lime or compost. We cross-reference this information with our database and the other members of the Edyn community. We’ve calibrated Edyn’s instruments to be sensitive enough to detect even the smallest changes in the soil’s electrical properties that are associated with shifts in moisture, acidity and fertility.

We believe that a great user experience is critical to the success of Edyn. That’s why we partnered with the award-winning firm fuseproject (designers of the Jambox) led by world-class designer Yves Behar. Their integrated designs for the Garden Sensor, Water Valve, app, brand, and logo are simple, beautiful, and provide a seamless user experience. Featuring elegant hardware, an engaging app, and cutting edge monitoring and wireless technology, the Edyn smart garden system will deliver the vital information you need to help plants thrive, without impeding on the aesthetics of your garden.
Edyn in the News
"Mr. Aramburu also hopes to make an impact closer to home. He says the devices can significantly reduce water use — a potential boon for drought-plagued parts of the United States. And Edyn’s customers and Kickstarter backers have the option of donating the sensors and valves to a nonprofit that builds gardens in schools."
"Dubbed Edyn, the device launched on Kickstarter last week and exceeded its $100,000 crowdfunding goal in a few days…The device’s form is elegant and unobtrusive, meant to spring from the ground like a big yellow flower rather than the piece of hi-tech equipment it is."
"There are plenty of ways to kill a plant without trying. Trust me. But even hardcore gardeners have a hard time knowing what’s really happening underground. Jason Aramburu created Edyn, a Wi-Fi connected gardening system, with the goal of doing for gardens what wearables have done for our bodies...It’s a smart idea, if not entirely novel."
"They’ve made the solar-powered soil monitor much sleeker and thinner...Plus, the paired app is also much more beautiful with a four-part grid that shows data on light, humidity, temperature, soil nutrition and moisture."
"It’s not hard to see how the smooth curves and warm colors want to stand apart from decades of clumsy buttons... Edyn may be the next step of evolution."
"Edyn isn't the only company trying to apply smart technology to the garden... But Edyn's system addresses both soil analysis -- and how that can help gardeners make decisions about their plants, fruits, and vegetables -- as well as irrigation."
"Aramburu has a new product to sell: an elegant soil probe that helps growers track their crops remotely. The product--called the Edyn Garden--measures humidity, light, temperature and soil conditions, and is the consumer equivalent of "precision" equipment now going into many farms."
We need your help
We need the help of the Kickstarter community to finalize the engineering work and order our first manufacturing run. These units will go to our backers, and the plant information from their gardens and farms will be loaded into our databases to continue making our system more accurate and robust for everyone.
We believe the Edyn smart garden system will transform how we interact with our gardens and farms. It will enable us to become better stewards of the environment and what we grow, because understanding our environment is the first step to conserving it.
Buy one give one: Slow Food USA Partnership
Edyn has established a partnership with Slow Food USA, a nonprofit organization that builds and maintains gardens in schools across the country, providing students with good locally grown food. Its parent organization, Slow Food International, builds and maintains food gardens in rural Africa, as part of its 10,000 Gardens in Africa Program. To support these initiatives, Edyn is offering a Buy One/Give One tier on its Kickstarter campaign. For $175, you can get one Garden Sensor for yourself and Edyn will donate one to a Slow Food Garden in the U.S. or Africa.
Who we are
Jason Aramburu, Edyn founder
I’m an ecologist, soil scientist and gardening enthusiast and I started Edyn because I have a passion for connected technology that helps us manage our natural resources more efficiently. After studying ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University, I worked for several years on projects in Panama’s rainforests and with farmers in Africa, learning from people in these diverse regions about the challenges they face to conserve the land and grow food sustainably. My experiences taught me that it’s time to use our knowledge and skills, augmented by technology, to change our food system, cultivate healthier plants and help us live more sustainably.
Risks and challenges
Over the past 18 months we’ve worked closely with the renowned design firm, fuseproject, and an outstanding manufacturer, Flextronics (both within easy driving distance of our office in the San Francisco Bay Area). Together we’ve created the industrial design for Edyn and engineered and tested functional prototypes of both devices in the field. We’ve also designed an early version of the app. We are now in the engineering validation phase to determine our per unit cost, based on the size of different production runs.
By working with these great partners we were able to remove much of the initial manufacturing risk. And by choosing mostly off the shelf sensor components we minimized tech and production risks. Our software platform was designed to be updatable over the air (OTA), enabling us to push software and firmware updates to Edyn devices as we develop new features.
Our designs are so innovative they may require specialized tooling or design and engineering services. The Edyn team is confident that if we reach our Kickstarter goal, we’ll have sufficient funds to finance tooling and production costs.
We recognize that it’s impossible to plan for every risk. But with our team’s deep experience and skills we’ve proven our resilience in the past, and know we can meet any challenge that comes along.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
