UPDATED FUNDING GOAL
In response to the incredible outpouring of love and support and in hearing what my Healing Bears will mean to so many people, young and old, I am committing to donate one Healing Bear for every Healing Bear awarded through the end of my project if we can increase the funding!
If we reach this new goal of $1350, one Healing Bear will be donated, for every bear awarded, to a non-profit of your choosing!
The additional funds will go toward securing a trademark, basic start-up business expenses and outreach. You just have to see how cute these bears are for yourself and I hope to reach as many therapists as I can by showing my Healing Bears at conferences and workshops for family and play therapists. My bears also make great gifts for military people returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

As a child I had a collection of teddy bears given to me by my mother. Every Christmas, every birthday, I could plan on tearing open the wrapping paper to finding one of these wonderful gifts. Some of them were big and soft, some of them were not quite as cuddly, but they all gave me comfort throughout my childhood. Whenever I felt sad or afraid I’d hold onto them, and they always made me feel better.Twenty-five years later, the comfort these gifts gave me has become the genesis for creating Teddy's Healing Bears.
Play therapy taps into a child’s natural capacity to heal through the use of simple toys. Children instinctively use toys to express themselves and communicate emotionally, so the selection of these toys can be critical for facilitating expression.
Teddy's Healing Bears are but one of many tools available to play therapists to facilitate therapeutic play. Once the child feels safe, the play therapist helps the child use a Healing Bear to make sense of her world and disruptive life experiences. Engaged side-by-side, the play therapist can help the child integrate elements of implicit memory into her ongoing life narrative and resolve a wide range of social, emotional, behavioral, and other developmental issues. She can't change the story but she can change her view of herself in the story and gain her power back.
As an adult, your first experience seeing this Healing Bear may be unsettling or even upsetting. These are natural responses to an object that most people expect to be soft and cuddly. After all, who would want a teddy bear that isn't covered with soft fur?
Well, you might be surprised to know that children experience Healing Bears differently. Children, teens, and adults are drawn to Healing Bears because they can relate to them or because they feel empathy for them. Healing Bears seem to be asking to be comforted and seem to have a life story of their own to tell. For that reason, some Healing Bears have missing limbs or appear misshapen. But the unique characteristics of each Healing Bear add to its personality and story.
No two Healing Bears are the same. Each is custom designed and has its own personality, making the selection of a Healing Bear a very personal experience. Many people relate to, or see their own vulnerabilities, within a particular bear, and they become the source of positive memories for the future, as that bear listens to their worries and becomes their trusted confidant.
Many parents fall head-over-heels in love with Teddy’s Healing Bears and fill their child's room with them, and therapists will find that Healing Bears become a vitally important part of their practice for working with children and adults alike.
