About this project

PLEASE NOTE: If you're having trouble playing the video, here it is on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKrcqKJDGS0&feature=channel_video_title

PLEASE NOTE: A couple people have asked why I am raising $1000 when all I need is a cover. For starters, about half of what I raise here would go to the cost of printing and shipping the paperbacks for rewards. Another $200 or so would go to Kickstarter and Amazon for various fees, and the remaining $300 is the cost for both the cover I'd use for the ebook and a high resolution front and back cover for the paperbacks.

Some other questions:

What's with the video?

I don't have a video camera, so I made a slide show using the software that I do have. When I made the video, I wanted to put a particular focus on the characters. The story is really all about them. All things considered, I think the slide show is not half bad.

Why novellas?

Three reasons: 1) Many readers (myself NOT included) are tired of every fantasy book being a thousand pages long and avoid the genre because of that. 2) Busy readers and teens alike might appreciate having something shorter to read. I'm convinced that there is a market for novellas. 3) It was just the "natural length" of the story, as Dean Wesley Smith puts it.

The book is about 40,000 words long, as I expect each volume in the series will be.

Why a female hero?

I do most of my character creation on a subconscious and intuitive level, so to a certain extent, she just came out that way. But over time, as I thought about what I wanted to say, the more sense it made to have a female lead.

Taya may not start off as a daring hero, but I think that you will see her potential and I hope that she will surprise you from time to time- in a good way.

I'm self publishing my first book at the end of May. I'm raising money here to get a professional cover by Tara Maya. You can find examples of her work at: http://tara-maya-cover-art.blogspot.com/

If you want to read some of my writing, I have a few samples in some blog posts, including this one: http://edwardlcote.blogspot.com/2011/03/writechat-and-sample-sunday.html or you can buy the Twelve Worlds Anthology for Charity ebook https://sites.google.com/site/twelveworlds/ and read my story "Iron In Shadow". The anthology is available on Kindle http://www.amazon.com/science-fiction-fantasy-anthology-ebook/dp/B004WT7OSQ and we'll have it up on Smashwords soon. You should definitely check that out regardless, for the thirteen other authors and the charity Reading is Fundamental.

My writing style is simple, direct, and accessible, but not dumbed down. One of my colleagues on the anthology mentioned that my story read like something much shorter than it is.

If you have any questions (or just want to chat about writing or music etc.) feel free to send me an email. You can learn more about my project and my thoughts on writing and pop culture on my blog: http://edwardlcote.blogspot.com/ or find me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/EdwardLCote

The music in the video is "Take the Lead" by Kevin MacLeod. You can find his huge and impressive library of royalty free music at http://incompetech.com

I'll list the names (or pseudonyms, pen names, twitter handles, etc.) of all backers (except any who wish to be anonymous) on my blog if the fundraising is successfully completed. In addition, backers at the $20 level will have their names printed in the book itself, both paperback and ebook editions.

Thanks for your support.
