About this project
We reached the $2,500 minimum goal and the campaign is a success! Amazingly, it only took 2 weeks. But please continue pledging, as any extra funds will be well spent on more festival entries and promotion, as well as replacing the recently deceased studio headphones I use to mix all sound and music for the project. THANK YOU!
My name is Bard Edlund, and I'm working on a funny and attractive animated short film done in a documentary/biopic/reality show style, beautifully mixing animation with live action backgrounds. The main (and more or less only) character is a contemporary cat inspired by 1920s and 1930s legendary cartoon characters like Felix the Cat and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Franklin fashions himself a bit of a ladies' cat, but the film's revealing footage may suggest not everything he says checks out.
Why should I back your project?
Hopefully because you're into it or see promise, and would like an independent project like this to succeed! Maybe you enjoy the subtlety of the art direction, the lack of loud, bratty voices and noises, the mood, the conversational pacing... or maybe you just love this cat and want some cool stuff! Check out the sweet rewards on the right!
I'm doing this without a staff or studio helping me out. That's great in terms of artistic freedom and vision, but less great in terms of affording the daily ramen dietary requirements. Here's what the money will help pay for:
- The camera I've been using
- Better audio recording hardware and software
- A new additional external hard drive before my current one explodes
- Festival fees and promotional materials -- lets get this thing seen!
- Time/labor -- animation is time-consuming and labor intensive!
$2,500 (minus the costs associated with producing the rewards, and the Kickstarter/Amazon fees) is not going to pay for all that much relative to the resources I'm putting into the project, but it would certainly help! And, if I reach my goal, you can still pledge your support and get your rewards.
Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing funding system. That means that if my goal is not reached, your money stays in your account, and I am left to drink my own tears for their salty yet paltry nutritional content.
What if you're a talentless hack and a thief?
Hmm, well, the talent part is kind of a subjective thing, but you may feel better knowing that I've completed an animated short in the past, which resonated with a decent number of people. It's called "Gone" and is available to view below. You can also check out my website to verify that I'm a guy with a long track record in various creative fields, whose work has been featured in a bunch of places. I guess this may help convince you that I have a reputation to protect, so taking all your money and then not giving you what you paid for -- a finished film and cool rewards -- would be pretty stupid.
OK. How will the film be released/distributed?
First, it will be made available in HD* to Kickstarter backers who qualify, because you deserve to see it before anyone else. Then I will submit to festivals and release it online for all to enjoy. I don't plan to do a DVD release.
*1920x1080, but the video backgrounds have been upscaled from 720p, because my camera can't do any better... The footage looks quite good though!
What will the final film be like?
A whole lot like the video at the top of this page, just more of it! The red chair interview shot is the same, but with a couple of variations. Then funny street scenes are interspersed to riff on what Franklin is saying. Rather than asking for your support, Franklin will be talking about his swingin' life, and we'll see scenes from it.
Cool. But what if I have no money to spare?
You can still help! Tweet this page to your followers, post about it on Facebook, blog about it, do whatever you can to spread the word! The more people hear about this and see this page, the greater the chance that someone's really into what I'm doing AND wants to part with some cash in return for the fun rewards on offer.

Thank you so much for your support!
