THEY'RE ALL IN THE UPDATES SECTION (TAB AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE)
Looking for peace, solitude and an escape from the outside world a mysterious stranger checks into a remote hotel.
Reluctantly drawn into the lives and activities of the hotel's guests it soon becomes terrifyingly clear that all is not as calm and serene as the management would have him believe.
A chance encounter with the hotel maid sets in motion a chain events that will take the Stranger to the very edge of sanity and threatens to destroy the lives of everyone present.
THE RENATA ROAD is an intensely dark, psychological thriller. A film about hidden evils, secret desires and baser instincts.
But also a film about hope and our ultimate desire to do good... no matter the cost.
THE RENATA ROAD is a British-made film, but that doesn't mean it's strictly for the Brits!
We want the film to appeal to viewers globally, not just on domestic soil. An engaging and strong narrative should contain themes and issues that will appeal to an international audience and we have strived to achieve that here.
The Renata Road is scripted, pre-produced, crewed and ready to shoot.
We just need to fund the shoot.
CJ de Mooi (The Stranger) introduces our Kickstarter Campaign:
Beyond The Bar is a small filmmaking company established by Director Ed Greenberg in 2008. In 2011 they produced a short film entitled The Renata Road. A psychological drama about one man's stay in a hotel and his relationship with the hotel manager and a fellow guest.
The film was, in part, a test. It was a mere fragment of what would evolve into a much grander concept and the culmination of a year of research focused around the evolving trends of cinema goers and dvd purchasers.
What the film strived to achieve was to create a narrative that actively engaged with the viewer. A film that would both entertain and challenge the audience. A film in which you are not spoon-fed the finer details of the plot. Questions are asked and questions are answered - not necessarily in that order. Neither are the answers hung out for all to see, displayed on large banners surrounded by bright, flashing lights. And, as in life, there isn't always a happy ending.
The film received several screenings and a London premiere. The Times newspaper described it as "beautifully crafted... a tour de force of emotion".
Feedback from both media and general audiences showed that there was clearly scope for a project of this kind in the global market. In early 2012, writing began on The Renata Road (The Feature Film).
3 screenwriters came aboard the project. Alan J Mockler, Greg Saxton and Chris Worthington.
To ensure that the concepts explored in the Short would work in an extended format, Ed and the writers went right back to basics and started afresh. For the feature, everyone wanted to ensure that the narrative worked on two levels. There should be a clear and enjoyable story told, one that even the most casual cinema-goer could follow; but underneath this there should be a greater mystery, one that asks questions of the audience and one that creates a strong sense of intrigue and dread. A story that runs much deeper than first appearances.
After a year of research and development the Renata script was completed. A completely new narrative had been created, one that went far beyond the constraints of the original Short. Every detail of the script, every character, every line of dialogue - they all form a part of the story and the mystery.
The Renata Road is daringly different. So different we feel it belongs in a genre of its own. The Psychological Enigma.
The only character to survive the rewrite from the Short to the Feature was The Stranger (CJ de Mooi). All other characters were either written out or they evolved into someone quite different.
The Renata Road is very much an ensemble piece. Each guest in the hotel and each member of staff has their own story to tell. All of which are disturbingly intertwined.
We love our cast and we're sure you will too.
You'll see them all in our teaser trailer updates.
Hey, "£10,000's not much to make a feature film!" we hear you say.
You're right, it's not.
It usually costs much more than that. But we run a tight ship and we've already covered the costs of pre-production, location securing and initial promotion ourselves.
We need your help to cover the actual cost of shooting the film.
One of the reasons we've worked so hard to get to this stage is to prove to all of you out there that we're serious about what we're doing. That we've already got a fantastic concept, a razor-sharp script and a brilliant cast and crew. And that we have a film that will have longevity, a broad appeal and that will sell.
That is why over the course of this campaign we will be releasing a number of teaser trailers. The first of which accompanies this launch.
Each of the trailers will feature specific characters from the film and will give you just a little taste of what you can expect from them in the actual film.
We've produced them specifically for this campaign; as a way to thank you for your support and to show you just how serious we are.
Your donations will cover all of the following and more:
- Equipment Hire
- Artists Expenses
All this stuff soon mounts up.
If Lost in Translation, Lost Highway and Exterminating Angel were to procreate - this would be their bastard offspring.
What may appear cruel or shocking at first may be revealed to be beautifully touching later.
Our guests are not who they appear to be.
We all carry secrets. Some we bury deep, deep down.
What happens when these secrets can no longer be contained...?
-Hotels have doors. Doors have keyholes.
We are all born with it. But can we ever truly retain it?
Where does purity stem from and can it be manufactured?
Inherent within us all, we are driven by our baser urges. Some we pursue, others we repress. Hunger, pleasure, knowledge, violence - governed by our sense of morality.
That is for you to decide.
The Renata Road is an enigma. There is a mystery to be solved here. But the solution wont come easily.
We have tried to provide a wide and varied selection of rewards, all of which will give you something directly linked to the film.

Risks and challenges
Every project has its potential pitfalls.
But, in terms of getting this film shot. Bang. We're there. Everything is planned prepared and ready to go. All we need to do is raise the funds.
Our locations are secure and we'll be shooting in January/Feburary 2014
The real challenge will come down to the marketing. We will make this film and it will be great. Will we be able to sell it? We strongly believe so. We have a strong narrative and an excellent cast and crew behind us. And we hope the teasers and trailers that we show you will prove that to you.
We're making this film to be shown.
It's not a personal ego rubbing exercise.
The writers and director have gone the distance with their research to create a narrative that will actively engage with its audience. To create a world that will draw you in and take you on a ride unlike anything you've experienced before.
It's a film that should do fantastically well on the world cinema market and we firmly believe that distributors will want to show it off.
We are already in positive talks with a major cinema chain about screening possibilities and we'll reveal more in a later update.
We will keep you all in the loop with the film's progress via updates, throughout the entire process. We know that this wouldn't be possible without you and we won't ever forget that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
