WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING...
Hold your hand out like you're running... You'll see it's obvious where viewing & interaction with your watch is easiest while on the move. Our solution is based on simplicity and the question: If the watch was invented now, with today's torrent of notifications, metrics and information - Where would it be placed for optimum viewing and interaction?
But we are hard on our gear and value QUALITY MATERIALS / COMFORT / EASE OF USE. Beyond this, we knew that to be widely adopted, it must be COMPATIBLE with as many watches as possible. (see COMPATIBILITY OVERVIEW further down).
Our patented design enables you to easily swap your watch from your existing band to SHIFT. While some watches have “quick release” spring pins, (Apple and some Pebble), most use a spring-pin or screw-pin. We include the simple tool that makes swapping easy!

Pin Connection?- Most watches (like Pebble, Basis Peak, etc.) use a pin connection and we have this covered! SHIFT comes with attachments to fit all watches that use a pin between 14 and 24mm. We even include the tool you need to swap the band yourself.
What doesn't work? Some watches use an "integrated" band-and-watch solution. This is not compatible and you can easily see the difference. Also, Polar watches, unfortunately are not compatible in this version of SHIFT (sorry Polar, we will try again in next version).
HOW IT CAME TO BE
As runners, we’re constantly reaching for the split-second edge. As engineers, we’ll take any excuse to tinker with the status quo.
While on a run to work together, I (this is Andrew) cursed my new running watch, insisting “The watch would be easier to see and press buttons if it was here!” while pointing to a part of my hand we later called the “Sweet Spot.” For the rest of the run, we discussed alternative solutions, but also why fitness watches were still in the same location as the “timepieces” of yesteryear.
We wanted to know our cadence without losing it. We wanted to know our pace without going slower. We wanted the metrics, but wanted to spend less energy and focus getting them.
Laughing, we blamed the watch interface, our addiction to metrics, or possibly my dependence on reading glasses, and then the root of the problem dawned on us:
The fitness watch really is in the wrong place.
As a species, we evolved looking at our hands. Not at our forearms. Staring at our forearms is, well…unnatural.
With James formal training in biology and my engineering background, we formed EdgeGear to take on the challenge.
Move the watch from where it has been located since World War I to a spot better suited to the torrent of information offered by today’s watches. A spot that is more ergonomic. Oh, and while doing so, make a band that is lighter than any other. Maybe one more thing: design a band that doesn’t release a river of sweat when you wear it.
Design. 3D print. Test. Learn. Iterate. Repeat for two years.
Finally satisfied with a prototype, we engaged a top Norwegian design firm in Oslo, Norway.
The result is the SHIFT, a watch band radical in design and uncompromising in comfort and function.
Risks and challenges
EdgeGear has tried to reduce risk through a lengthy testing phase using functional prototypes and real-world runners and cyclists. We have good experience in developing and launching kits and equipment, and a relationship has been developed with a manufacturer. However there are potential risks in any production. As an example, materials have been selected but may perform differently in the laser cut prototypes than the injection-molded final bands. The product may need further adjustments, which might require new molds and create a bottleneck in production. Shipping and fulfillment can be subject to delays due to weather or customs. However, these are challenges we have seen before and will be working with experts in manufacturing and fulfillment to keep the process moving.
